The Denver Nuggets are getting a slight breather following a stretch against some of the league's top teams. George Karl is certainly deserving of a respite of his own.

Playing their first game without Karl since he was again diagnosed with cancer, the Nuggets look to sweep their four-game season series with the lowly Golden State Warriors on Thursday night.

Denver (37-19) has alternated wins and losses in a tough eight-game span which was highlighted by road wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland. The only sub-.500 team the Nuggets played during that span was Washington, losing 107-97 on Friday.

Denver hasn't played since a 114-105 home win over Boston on Sunday, and now faces one of the league's doormats. The Nuggets have scored at least 123 points in winning each of their last five games against the Warriors (16-40).

But the Nuggets will be without Karl, who is staying in Denver because of his ongoing treatment for neck and throat cancer. This is the first time Denver will play without Karl since he announced his diagnosis Feb. 16.

Karl, who had been cancer-free since prostate surgery nearly five years ago, will miss some games down the stretch, but he is optimistic about making a full recovery in time for the postseason. Assistant Adrian Dantley will serve as head coach when Karl is not with the team.

"When you don't have the head coach, a lot of the onus comes down on the players," said point guard Chauncey Billups, one of the Nuggets' three captains. "For me, it's holding everyone accountable, making sure guys don't stray. ... As captains and as players, we're going to show (Dantley) the same respect we show George."

Billups had a strong performance versus the Celtics with 26 points as Denver improved to 4-0 against the Eastern Conference's three division leaders - Cleveland, Boston and Orlando.

"We're still inconsistent at times," Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin said. "If we can lock in and just do the stuff we can do and learn from the mistakes we make, that can go a long way."

Denver, though, has made the most of its opportunities against Golden State, which has the second-worst record in the West. The Warriors, 2-2 on a six-game homestand, will be without second-leading scorer Corey Maggette (20.3 points per game) for the third straight contest due to a hamstring injury.

Golden State had one of its worst shooting performances of the season Tuesday, making 37.9 percent of its attempts in a 110-102 loss to Philadelphia. Two days earlier, the Warriors shot 53.6 percent in a 108-104 victory over Atlanta.

"We just have to come out and play like we know how to play, and have energy and be decisive with the ball, get after it on defense," Golden State rookie center Chris Hunter said.

With Maggette out, leading scorer Monta Ellis is being counted on even more. Ellis, who averages just under 26 points per game, has totaled 48 points in his last two games after missing three with a sprained knee.

Ellis averaged 35.5 points and 8.0 assists in two games against the Nuggets last month.

Nuggets take care of business against Warriors

OAKLAND, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Acting coach Adrian Dantley made sure the Denver Nuggets didn't get any worse against teams with sub-.500 records before handing the team back to George Karl.

With Karl at home in Denver, continuing his treatments to combat neck and throat cancer, the Nuggets pulled away late behind Chauncey Billups' 37 points, nine assists and six rebounds for a 127-112 victory Thursday against the Golden State Warriors.

At 38-19, this marks the best 57-game start in the Nuggets' franchise history. But veteran forward Kenyon Martin couldn't help but think about the ones that got away. Denver is 24-9 against teams with winning records, just 13-10 against teams under .500.

"It's games like tonight that get my attention, a team that's under .500," Martin said. "Guys always show up to play money games. That's not my concern. We could be better. I just think about losing to Philly at home, Minnesota at home, at Charlotte. Games like that, they'll come back to bite you."

After two near-misses against the Warriors last month -- including one win at home that came only after J.R. Smith was fouled on a desperation 40-foot heave with 0.4 seconds remaining -- the Nuggets made sure this one didn't go down to the wire, winning every quarter.

"When we started the game tonight, we made the emphasis, 'Hey, we've got to do better against teams that don't have a .500-plus record," said Dantley, who is now 2-1 lifetime filling in for Karl. "We kept talking about that yesterday and today, and we've got to try to do the same thing to Detroit [on Friday]."

Dantley said that unlike his stints subbing for Karl in earlier seasons, both on short notice, he had been inundated over the past few days by callers proffering advice. Most people just told Dantley to be himself, but the Hall of Famer still felt the added weight of sitting in the No. 1 chair.

"You've got more responsibilities," Dantley said. "You want to be perfect. You want to say the right thing. You want to make the right substitution. You want to call the right play."

Karl is scheduled to coach the Nuggets on Friday against Detroit, and work Denver's next two road games. Dantley is expected to fill in on March 10 in Minnesota to kick off a four-game road trip, with Karl's availability after that yet to be determined.

It was a strange feeling for the Nuggets not to have Karl, who has served as Denver's coach since midway through the 2004-05 season, on the bench. Only Carmelo Anthony, Nene and Martin were playing in Denver before Karl's ascension.

"It was different. It was weird," Billups said. "As a player, you always find confidence in that calmness when you look over there at your head coach. But on the flip side, I thought AD did a great job of controlling the game with his playcalling."

Down the stretch, the playcalling was mostly to turn Billups loose. He had six points of his own and dealt three assists that lead to seven other points in a 18-3 run took Denver from a six-point lead to a 124-103 advantage with 3:33 to go.

The Nuggets are now 23-0 in games where they score more than 110 points, including all four wins over the Warriors, who were swept by Denver for the first time since 2000-01.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 30 points and 13 assists, but short-handed Golden State ran out of gas at the end. The Warriors only suited up eight players because guard C.J. Watson was held out due to flu-like symptoms and possible appendicitis, and one of those eight was guard Monta Ellis, who was hampered by a bad back during a 6-for-22 shooting night.

The absence of Watson was especially noticeable for how well he's played of late, averaging 23.4 points over the Warriors' previous five games.

"We missed the extra scorer, the extra playmaker," Curry said. "Even his defensive presence, we had a game plan coming in with him in the lineup that was different than how we played tonight."

Center Andris Biedrins, who took a steady stream of sometimes withering criticism from Nelson over the previous 48 hours, scored on a pick-and-roll play with Curry for Golden State's first possession, which helped set the tone.

"Our game plan was to come out and run ball screens pretty much the whole game," Curry said. "We thought we could attack them . . . we had shooters on the other side so we could spread the floor out so that allowed [Biedrins] and Ronny [Turiaf] to have a lot of open looks down the middle."
