Magic-Rockets Preview

Beating the team with the best record in the NBA should have served as a reminder that the Orlando Magic are the reigning Eastern Conference champions. Now, the Southeast Division leaders will try to avoid a letdown.

The Magic look to sweep the season series from the struggling Houston Rockets for the first time in eight years Wednesday night.

Orlando (38-19) is second in the Eastern Conference, five games back of the league-leading Cavaliers, whom the Magic defeated in six games in last year's conference finals.

A playoff rematch is very possible, and Orlando got the better of visiting Cleveland on Sunday, beating them 101-95.

"Sometimes people do forget that we're the defending Eastern Conference champions," said forward Rashard Lewis, who had 15 points Sunday. "That's OK. We just got to keep playing hard, because we know we might see them again."

Dwight Howard will try to help the Magic build on Sunday's win when they visit Houston (28-27), loser of four of five and on the outside of the top eight in the West standings.

Howard had 22 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks Sunday, giving him averages of 28.0 points, 16.3 boards and 5.3 blocks the last three games. The All-Star center leads the NBA with 13.5 rebounds per game and 2.8 blocks.

"He's playing as well as anybody in the league," coach Stan Van Gundy said.

Howard pulled down 20 boards while adding 13 points and four blocks in a 102-87 home win over the Rockets on Dec. 23 after Orlando dropped 12 of the previous 14 meetings since sweeping the season series in 2001-02.

Houston is still trying to find some cohesion after making a three-team, seven-player deal prior to Thursday's trade deadline. The move landed Kevin Martin with the Rockets and sent Tracy McGrady to New York.

Martin, who averaged 19.8 points in 22 games with Sacramento, scored 13 points on 5 of 12 from the field in a 102-94 loss at New Orleans on Sunday. That was an improved shooting performance from the guard's team debut a night earlier, when he made 3 of 16 shots for 14 points in a 125-115 loss to Indiana as Houston's home slide reached three games.

The Rockets haven't dropped four in a row at Toyota Center since a five-game skid March 13-26, 2006.

"It's like starting over," said rookie swingman Chase Budinger, who scored 18 against the Hornets. "We have new faces on the team and we are just trying to get used to one another. … The next few days are going to be very important for us."

Martin was held to a season low-tying five points in his last meeting with Orlando, a loss with the Kings on Jan. 22.

Budinger has provided solid scoring off the bench lately, averaging 13.3 points on 15 of 22 shooting in the last three games. A sprained ankle sidelined him for the last meeting with Orlando.

Howard's perfect game powers Magic past Rockets

HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- For much of Wednesday's game, the Orlando Magic flexed their muscles and got to work against the Rockets. But when a second-half rally got the Rockets a little too close for comfort, it was Superman who supplied the muscle.

With Dwight Howard dominating the paint on both ends of the court, the Magic ripped the Rockets 110-92 before a crowd of 15,749 at Toyota Center.

Howard finished with 30 points and 16 rebounds, which makes you wonder what he could have done had the All-Star center not been limited to 22 seconds -- yes, seconds -- of play in the first quarter because of two quick fouls.

"That was a Guinness world record," quipped Howard, who hit all 11 of his field-goal attempts. "I did a sprint from free-throw line to free-throw line, and then I was out of the game. It was different, but I tried to come back and tell myself to not get everything back at once. Take your time. I just tried to be as dominant as I could without fouling."

Mission accomplished.

"He was incredible," Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. "He made great plays out of double teams. He's patient down there, taking exactly what they give him. If they double, he's not forcing. He's throwing it out, and we're doing a better job of re-posting and getting the ball back in."

Especially against the Rockets' collection of undersized "bigs."

Defended by the likes of Chuck Hayes (6-foot-6), Jared Jeffries (a slender 6-foot-11), Hilton Armstrong and Luis Scola (both 6-foot-9), the Magic were able to pound it inside to Howard. And the big man responded with a slew of dunks and layups, the biggest reason for Orlando's 52 points in the paint.

But it's really not as simple as saying Howard beat up the Rockets.

Indeed, for much of the night Orlando was playing chess while the Rockets were playing something more like checkers. For every Houston adjustment, the Magic had an immediate -- and effective -- reaction.

When the Rockets spread the defense in an effort to stop the Magic's efficient pick-and-roll game, the Magic went to work inside. And when the Rockets packed the lane to stop -- or at least slow or foul -- Howard, the Magic simply kicked the ball out and rotated it until they found another wide-open jump shot from the corners or top of the key.

"We play great on offense when we're moving the ball around, making the extra pass," said Magic forward Rashard Lewis, who scored 13 points. "Especially when Dwight's getting double-teamed, he's making the good pass out of the double team. As long as we're making shots, we should be OK on the offensive end."

The Magic shot 49 percent for the game, and that's with J.J. Redick and Mickael Pietrus combining for 5-of-20 shooting even though almost every shot was uncontested.

Jameer Nelson ran the offense almost flawlessly, racking up 17 points and nine assists to essentially cancel out Houston point guard Aaron Brooks, who finished with 24 points and eight assists, but launched 22 shots and turned the ball over five times.

But for all the good things the Magic did this night, what stuck in Van Gundy's craw was what he viewed as a lazy stretch of basketball in the third quarter, which allowed the Rockets to slice what had been a 27-point Orlando lead down to 11 at the end of the period.

"We're just not good with leads," Van Gundy said. "We have to learn to do a better job of closing out games. I'm just not happy with that. I'm not... I thought we played a really good first 28 minutes, especially with Dwight playing only 10 of those in the first half, and we did a pretty good job of closing it out the last four minutes...

"It got to be a struggle."

But it appeared to be a case of what the Rockets were doing rather than what the Magic were not. Houston coach Rick Adelman made a move that was either shrewd or desperate (or perhaps a bit of both), going with a smaller, space-the-floor lineup that emphasized 3-point shooting.

The Rockets responded by raining 3-pointers (12-of-24 from the arc for the game, 10-of-18 in the second half), trimming the deficit down to nine points on three occasions. The last came on a 3-pointer from Chase Budinger (13 points) with 3:41 to play in the game.

"Our defense should have been able to hang in and not make the run as big as it was," Van Gundy said. "We don't defend the 3-point line well. We don't. We've got to learn to play harder, to be able to protect the paint and close out [on perimeter shooters], and we're not doing that."

But Vince Carter responded with a shot-clock-beating 3-pointer on the Magic's next possession, killing the Rockets' rally and sparking an 8-0 run that put the game away.

"I just happened to look up and there were four seconds left on the [shot] clock," said Carter, who had 16 points and seven assists. "I was trying to look for Dwight in the post, but they were doing a great job of fronting him, so I had to knock the shot down."

A shot that turned out to be a crusher for the Rockets, who remain in team in search of an identity after trading away Tracy McGrady and Carl Landry.

"We have to find out how we're going to win," said Houston coach Rick Adelman. "We just lost whatever confidence we really had. We just kind of lost everything. I think that with everything that's happened [with the trades], we just don't seem to play with the same energy and enthusiasm. We have to find a way to get that back."
