Hornets-Bucks Preview

With Marcus Thornton and Darren Collison developing rapidly, the New Orleans Hornets have two more players who can give the Milwaukee Bucks problems.

After getting an outstanding game from their rookie guards, the Hornets look for their ninth straight win over the Bucks on Wednesday night.

New Orleans (30-27) is coming off its first loss in three games, 105-95 at Cleveland on Tuesday. Thornton and Collison, though, continue to give the Hornets reason for optimism, especially as superstar Chris Paul remains sidelined for at least another two weeks due to a knee injury.

Thornton and Collison combined for 59 points, including a franchise-record 23 from Thornton in the second quarter. Peja Stojakovic previously held the team mark, posting 22 points in the first quarter against Charlotte on Nov. 14, 2007.

"I would rather have a 'W,'" said Thornton, who finished with a career-high 37 off the bench. "The records mean something, but they would mean more if we had won."

Thornton, a second-round pick from LSU, is averaging 16.3 points and shooting 41.5 percent from 3-point range over his last 15 games.

Collison, starting at point guard in place of Paul, is averaging 22.9 points over his last eight contests. He had 22 and 10 assists versus the Cavaliers.

Selected 21st overall in last year's draft from UCLA, Collison had a strong performance in the Hornets' 102-99 overtime win over Milwaukee (27-28) on Nov. 25 with 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. He hit a 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 91 and eventually help New Orleans extend its winning streak over the Bucks.

Thornton had four points in 19 minutes, but has become a much more significant contributor since then.

Collison will be pitted against Brandon Jennings in a matchup of two of the league's top first-year players. Jennings, drafted 10th overall, is averaging 16.5 points and 6.1 assists.

Jennings had 14 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals in this season's first contest with New Orleans. He was held to four points on 1-of-9 shooting against New York on Monday, but Milwaukee got an outstanding performance from center Andrew Bogut in an 83-67 victory.

Bogut had 24 points and 20 rebounds, shooting 12 of 15 en route to his third career 20-20 game. Milwaukee has had eight 20-20 performances since 1986-87, and Bogut has three of them.

"When he got his offense going it makes it easier for us to hit open shots or get to the middle of the floor," Jennings said.

Bogut also had five blocks as the Bucks had their best defensive game of the season, holding the Knicks to 33.8 percent shooting. Milwaukee is 8-1 when Bogut has at least four blocks.

Bogut was one of five players to reach double figures in scoring.

"It's not just one person on the team," Jennings said. "It depends on who is hot that night. Sometimes John (Salmons) is hot, sometimes Andrew is hot. We got so many weapons out here."

Milwaukee has won three straight, holding each opponent to less than 89 points.

Bogut comes up big in win over Hornets

MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Milwaukee Bucks didn't make very many jump shots on Wednesday night. Then again, they didn't need to.

Andrew Bogut dominated inside for 26 points and 13 rebounds in not even three quarters as Milwaukee posted a whopping 72 points in the paint on its way to a 115-95 victory over the New Orleans Hornets.

Milwaukee won its fourth straight and its 10th in its last 13 games to get back to .500 at 28-28. Milwaukee also snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Hornets.

Bogut made 13 of 20 shots to lead the inside charge. He was 6 for 8 in the first quarter to soften up the New Orleans defense.

After that, the rest of the Bucks paraded to the basket, and their 72 points in the paint easily whipped the previous season high of 58.

"We made an emphasis of trying to go to the hoop," said reserve point guard Luke Ridnour, who scored twice on drives in the second quarter. "We knew that they played last night so we just tried to take advantage of that and make something happen for each other."

Ridnour finished with 10 points and six assists and helped lead an offense that shot 52.2% (48 for 92).

"I thought they moved the ball very crisply and always had us on our heels scrambling to try and recover as opposed to being in position early," New Orleans coach Jeff Bower said. "They put us in those positions with their drives and their crisp ball movement."

The Hornets played well in suffering a tough loss the night before at Cleveland. Before the game, Bower hoped that his team would continue on that path. Instead, he was left to ponder the inside job the Bucks had done to his team.

It all started in the first quarter with Bogut, who followed Monday's 24-point, 20-rebound showing with another strong performance.

"He's having a very good year, there's no doubt about that," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "And as the year is going on, he's getting better. There's not a whole lot to complain about there. He's obviously a big factor for us, and on nights when he's scoring the ball like that, it's huge."

How huge? The Bucks improved to 14-3 in games where Bogut has scored 20 or more and 11-1 in games where he posts at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Bogut had 16 points -- all inside -- and nine boards by the break, and guards John Salmons, Brandon Jennings and Ridnour got to the hoop with regularity.

Jennings' driving layup with 0.5 seconds left gave the Bucks a 61-55 lead, and 42 of Milwaukee's points had come in the paint in the first 24 minutes.

"In the first half guys were doing a great job of just putting the ball on the deck and getting all the way to the rim," Skiles said. "They had a tough game last night, and we also went into 'Bogues' and he had another big game."

Bogut took a seat with 7.6 seconds left in the third quarter and the Bucks ahead, 89-72. His services were not required the rest of the night as the lead never got below 15 in the final 12 minutes.

"That's definitely nice," said Bogut, noting that the Bucks play Thursday night in Indiana. "We have a tough schedule this week with four games in five nights."

New acquisition John Salmons had 18 points, as Milwaukee had five players in double figures and three more with nine points each. The Bucks are 4-0 since acquiring Salmons last Thursday.

"It started out with Bogues and his post-ups softening up the defense a little bit," Salmons said. "When you've got somebody like that in the middle they've got to respect that. And that opened up the paint for the perimeter guys to drive."

And that they did.

"He's huge for us," Bogut said of Salmons. "Even when he gets hot with jump shots he doesn't settle for jump shots. He attacks the paint and gets to the free throw line. He's a great finisher in there, and he's a great passer. No disrespect to the guys we gave up, but he's been an absolute steal for us."

Rookie Marcus Thornton, coming off a 37-point effort the night before in Cleveland, led the Hornets with 25 points but was just 8 for 21. Rookie point guard Darren Collison added 22 points and nine assists, and forward David West had 19 for New Orleans, which fell to 30-28. Milwaukee is now at .500 and also pulled into a tie with Miami (29-29) for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference standings.
