Pistons-Clippers Preview

It's been more than a month since either the Detroit Pistons or the Los Angeles Clippers recorded three straight victories, but one of those clubs will end its drought Wednesday night.

The Pistons look to win their seventh straight road game against the Clippers, who snapped a 13-game losing streak in the series earlier this season.

The Pistons (21-35) haven't won three straight since Jan. 12-16, but they put themselves in position to match that streak by cruising to a 101-89 win in Sacramento on Tuesday night, the opener of a four-game western trip.

Richard Hamilton scored 30 points and Tayshaun Prince added 22, helping Detroit take a 30-point lead in the third quarter and hold on for the win.

"We're trying to build on this game, make the best of what we have left in the season," Prince said.

To do so, the Pistons will have to beat a Clippers team that's searching for its first three-game win streak since a run of four consecutive victories from Dec. 31-Jan. 10.

Los Angeles (23-33) picked up its latest victory Monday night, beating Charlotte 98-94 behind 20 points from Rasual Butler, who has averaged 17.3 points and shot 47.7 percent (21 for 44) from 3-point range over his last six games.

Chris Kaman had 18 points and 13 rebounds against the Bobcats, and Drew Gooden and Travis Outlaw added 10 points apiece in their debuts with the Clippers. It was also Outlaw's first game since undergoing surgery on his left foot in November, while playing for Portland.

"Drew Gooden and Steve Blake (acquired from the Blazers with Outlaw on Feb. 16) came in and played well for us and gave a good contribution," Kaman said. "I thought Travis played pretty well after being out for so long. It's nice to have options on the court."

Kaman and Baron Davis were the main options in a 104-96 victory at Detroit on Nov. 27, the Clippers' first win over the Pistons since Nov. 3, 2002.

Kaman, an All-Star center and former Central Michigan standout, helped his team rally from a seven-point halftime deficit with 26 points, including two key baskets in the final 2:24. Davis added 25 points and 10 assists as Los Angeles shot 58.7 percent from the field.

The Pistons, who shot 39.6 percent, were led by Jonas Jerebko's career-best 22 points. The rookie forward, however, might not be available after injuring his ankle Tuesday.

Detroit, which has alternated wins and losses in its last seven road games, didn't have Hamilton or Prince in the first meeting with Los Angeles due to injury.

Hamilton comes into this matchup averaging 30.5 points on 54.5 percent shooting over the past four games. He's also made 51 straight free throws.

"He's getting his legs back, that's important,'' Pistons coach John Kuester said of the veteran shooting guard, who's been limited to 29 games this season by ankle and hamstring injuries. "He's coming off screens well and it's allowing him to get good looks."

Hamilton, who hasn't faced Los Angeles since March 1, 2008, has averaged 14.4 points - 3.6 below his career average - despite shooting 56.1 percent in the previous five matchups. He's scored 22.1 per game in his last eight road games in the series.

Prince is averaging 21.7 points in his last three games against the Clippers.

Clippers win third straight, take down poor-shooting Pistons

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Los Angeles Clippers might be on to something.

For the second consecutive game, they turned the game around in the fourth quarter behind the sharp shooting of Rasual Butler and some timely defensive stops.

A woeful night at the free-throw line by the Detroit Pistons didn't hurt either, as the Clippers stormed back Wednesday to post a 97-91 victory at Staples Center.

It's the third consecutive victory overall for the Clippers, who had lost six straight before beginning the winning streak. They are 12-0 at home this season against teams at or below. 500.

"We are a better team than people think," Butler said. "If we keep playing with confidence, we will get these wins."

Butler scored 12 of his 16 points in the final quarter, nine coming on 3-point baskets and the other three at the free-throw line. His final two free throws with 10.9 seconds left gave Los Angeles a four-point lead and appeared to salt the victory, but Richard Hamilton was then fouled on a 3-point try on the other end.

Hamilton, an 86.9 percent shooter on the season coming into the game, which was 10th-best in the league, missed all three attempts. He was 2-for-8 from the line overall, and the Pistons were 10-for-22 as a team. Hamilton had made 51 consecutive free throws coming into the game.

"That really surprised me because he's such a good foul shooter," said Detroit coach John Kuester. "I would want him at the line."

The Clippers, meanwhile, were 22-for-24 from the stripe for a season-best 91.7 percent. Drew Gooden and Travis Outlaw, who came to the Clippers in trades last week, were a combined 10-for-10.

"Some of our news guys are better free-throw shooters, which helps our percentage," Hughes said.

Detroit (21-36) had won the night before in Sacramento, but they owned a 25-point lead heading into the final quarter of that game, allowing them to rest most of their starters down the stretch. They gave up a season-high 21 offensive rebounds to the Clippers (24-33), which led to a season-best 28 second-chance points.

"Playing on back-to-back nights on the road is part of the NBA," Kuester said. "We were ready to play."

Chris Kaman led the charge on the boards, but received critical contributions from Gooden, who made his first start for the Clippers in just his second game since coming over from the Washington Wizards in a trade for Al Thornton.

Kaman finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Gooden had 20 points and 13 rebounds, six coming on the offensive end.

"I feel like I'm getting it done," Gooden said. "I am boxing out and setting the pick and roll. If I was not playing well, I'm sure coach would have sat me on the bench until I began to follow his style of coaching."

All five Clipper starters scored in double figures. Eric Gordon scored 13 points and backcourt mate Baron Davis had 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

"Tonight was a good game for us," Hughes said. "I'm glad all the guys stepped up."

Hamilton finished with 21 points but needed 21 field-goal attempts. He sank three 3-pointers in the final quarter, his last giving the Pistons a 91-90 lead with 44.2 seconds remaining. Butler matched him on the other end, however, giving the Clippers their final lead.

"I made a major 3-pointer that got us the lead," Butler said. "I was confident in letting the ball go."

Butler then swatted away a driving layup attempt by Rodney Stuckey on the other end, then was fouled and sent to the line, where he swished both attempts to push the lead to four.

Stuckey, the team's second-leading scorer behind Hamilton, missed all seven of his field-goal attempts in the final quarter and finished with 14 points. Tayshaun Prince, a product of nearby Dominguez High School in Compton, had 17 points and 10 rebounds, but took only one shot in the final quarter.

About the only area Detroit shined was in bench scoring. Jason Maxiell scored 14 points off the bench and Will Bynum had 10, leading the Pistons to a 32-17 advantage.

The Clippers also defeated Detroit in November, ending a 13-game losing streak, but the host Pistons were without Hamilton, Prince and Ben Gordon.

They appeared to be the better team through the first three quarters, building a 12-point lead in the first half and maintaining a nine-point advantage in the final minutes of the third quarter. The Clippers scored the final five points of the third and finally caught the Pistons, 74-74, on Butler's 3-point basket with 9:36 remaining.

"The third quarter was the time that we needed to put them away, but we didn't take advantage of that," Bynum said.
