With some new additions in the mix, the Dallas Mavericks are playing like a team with a renewed sense of purpose.

The Mavericks look to continue their solid play with a fourth straight victory Monday night while trying for a sixth consecutive home win over the Indiana Pacers.

Dallas (35-21) lost five of seven heading into the All-Star break, then dropped its first game back by 13 points at Oklahoma City. The Southwest Division-leading Mavericks have bounced back with wins against playoff contenders Phoenix, Orlando and Miami.

The Mavericks are fourth in the Western Conference, but poised to improve thatposition.

"We had 30 games left after the All-Star break," said guard Jason Kidd, who had 21 points and 11 assists in a 97-91 win over the Heat on Saturday. "Being a veteran ballclub, we understand what's at stake. So the dress rehearsal is over and we've got to get serious."

Nowitzki scored 28 points and newcomer Caron Butler added 20 against a Miami team playing without injured superstar Dwyane Wade.

Though they've only been with the team for a week, Butler and center Brendan Haywood appear to be paying dividends for the Mavericks after being acquired, along with DeShawn Stevenson, from Washington for underachieving veterans Josh Howard, Drew Gooden and two others.

Butler is averaging 16.0 points in a more limited offensive role in four games with his new team, while Haywood has put up 10.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in his first four contests with the Mavericks. The pair also seems to be helping the team improve on the defensive end.

Dallas' four opponents since the break are averaging 93.0 points on 44.1 percent shooting. In going 3-5 prior to the break, the Mavericks gave up 112.4 points and their opponents shot 52.9 percent during that span.

"I think we're getting better," Nowitzki told the Mavericks' official Web site. "If good players just play off each other and play unselfish and play together, we'll be OK...It's been fun."

The fun could continue as the Mavericks try for a fifth consecutive victory overall against the Pacers (19-36). Dallas has won eight of nine overall against Indiana, and nine of 10 at home in the series.

Nowitzki, who had 31 points in a 113-92 win at Indiana on Nov. 27, is averaging 27.5 points in his last 11 games versus the Pacers. Butler is averaging 27.3 and 9.3 rebounds in his last six against Indiana.

Though the Mavericks are averaging 109.6 points and shooting 50.9 percent during their five-game home winning streak over the Pacers, Indiana enters this contest coming off a 125-115 at Houston on Saturday.

Danny Granger matched a season high with 36 points and T.J. Ford scored 19 of his season-high 23 in the second half as the Pacers snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 7-21 on the road.

"It's been a rough season for all of us," said Ford, averaging 10.5 points in 37 games this season. "We understand teams are really going to look past us and it's an opportunity for us to try to win a lot of games and get back in the hunt."

Granger is averaging 28.8 points in his last four contests, but 10.8 in four career road games against the Mavericks.

Defense drives Dallas to fourth straight victory

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Mavericks surrendered at least 100 points in eight straight games before the All-Star break, including a 120.3 average over the last three games of that 3-5 stretch.

In five games since a Feb. 13 trade with the Wizards that added Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson to the roster, Dallas has not allowed an opponent to reach triple-digits. Including Monday's wire-to-wire 91-82 victory against the short-handed Pacers, the new-look Mavericks have held foes to just 90.8 points per game.

"Defensively, I think we've been playing great," Haywood said. "We have played a lot of teams that are high-powered teams ... and we have kept them all under 100 and that speaks volumes to where we are as a defensive team right now."

Dirk Nowitzki tallied a game-high 23 points, his 15th consecutive game with at least 20 against the Pacers, and Jason Terry added 14 off the bench. Haywood got his 15th double-double with 13 points and a career high-tying 20 rebounds, matching his total at Chicago on Jan. 15.

Dallas has won four straight for its longest streak since early December. The Mavericks have defeated the Pacers in five consecutive meetings and nine of the last 10, and haven't lost to Indiana in Dallas since January 2004.

Indiana shot just 37 percent overall and 13 percent (3-for-23) from 3-point range, the lowest mark by any Dallas opponent this season. The Pacers trailed by 22 points before finishing the game with a 14-2 run in garbage time.

"Got to make some shots in order to win in this league," Indiana head coach Jim O'Brien said. "We did not make shots. We defended fairly decently. We chart every possession, and we missed 27 open looks and that was the difference in the game."

Haywood has averaged 11.2 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.4 blocks since the trade and has started in all four wins against the Suns, Magic, Heat and Pacers, replacing the injured Erick Dampier (dislocated right middle finger).

"Haywood is a beast in there," Nowitzki said. "He gets every rebound and alters shots. He is always in there clogging stuff up. When we made the trade, we didn't know Damp was going to be hurt, so that really is a life-saver now."

The Mavericks only shot 39 percent and were outscored 40-28 in the paint, but made up the difference with a 24-13 advantage in fastbreak points. They also had a 53-46 advantage on the boards as Indiana fell to 9-26 when getting outrebounded.

Leading scorer Danny Granger was not with the Pacers due to undisclosed personal reasons. He scored 36 in Saturday's win at Houston and is averaging 22.9 points per game. Indiana was the second consecutive opponent playing minus its best player against Dallas, which defeated Dwyane Wade-less Miami here Saturday night. The Pacers are 6-12 this season without Granger.

T.J. Ford led Indiana with 14 points and Troy Murphy was the only other Pacer in double figures with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Indiana lost for the fifth time in six games and fell to 7-22 on the road and 3-26 when scoring fewer than 100 points.

Both teams started cold, missing a combined 21 of the game's first 26 shots. After falling behind by 10 in the first quarter, the Pacers got as close as 39-37 on a drive by Troy Murphy with 3:38 left in the half. Dallas answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Jason Kidd (10 points, seven assists) and Stevenson and took a 49-41 lead to the locker room.

Another 3-pointer by Kidd, who is 11-for-24 from behind the arc during the four-game winning streak, capped an 11-3 third-quarter surge that swelled the Mavericks' lead to 64-48 at the 7:20 mark. Nowitzki scored eight in the quarter -- 16 in the second half -- and Dallas opened the final frame with a 72-61 advantage.

The lead quickly ballooned to 85-64 with a 13-3 run to start the fourth quarter, giving Carlisle a chance to rest Kidd for the entire period.

"It helps tremendously," Carlisle said. "Jason has really been willing our team to some of these victories. He has driven himself hard. He's driving our team hard. And every minute he plays is at a higher octane than most guys. It's great he could sit the fourth quarter. It starts to get him recharged for Wednesday."

Wednesday brings Kobe Bryant and the Lakers to the American Airlines Center. Carlisle knows his team has to be sharper if they want to knock off the Western Conference favorites.

"We played a sloppy game tonight," Carlisle said. "Our ball movement wasn't crisp. We settled for shots that weren't the best shots. Defensively, we had too many breakdowns. We're going to have to get better from this."
