Mavericks-Thunder Preview

Dallas has another steady scorer after acquiring Caron Butler in a trade during All-Star weekend. One of his most important initial tasks with the Mavericks, though, will be trying to stop Kevin Durant.

In the teams' first game following the break, the struggling Mavericks will likely match up one of their newest acquisitions with perhaps the hottest scorer in the league as they try to end the Oklahoma City Thunder's six-game winning streak Tuesday night.

Dallas (32-20) has lost nine of 16, including a 127-91 rout by Denver last Tuesday. Those struggles may have prompted a seven-player trade Saturday that saw them get Butler, center Brendan Haywood and guard DeShawn Stevenson from Washington.

Josh Howard, Drew Gooden and reserves Quinton Ross and James Singleton were sent to the Wizards.

"We were struggling here for a month, so we are excited now to have some new guys," Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "It's not going to be an easy ride, but we are looking forward to coming together quick and hopefully finish the season strong."

Butler, a two-time All-Star, was key to the deal. The veteran forward averages 16.9 points and 6.7 rebounds, and is expected to move in the Mavs' starting lineup. He's also averaging 1.7 steals a game for his career, and will become one of Dallas' better perimeter defenders. The Mavs, giving up an average of 112.4 points over their last eight games, can use the help.

Butler and Shawn Marion will likely each get time trying to guard Durant, who's helped Oklahoma City (30-21) extend the franchise's longest winning streak since taking nine in a row in 2004, when it was still based in Seattle.

Durant ranks second in the league in scoring, averaging 29.7 points. He has scored 25 or more in 25 straight games - the longest stretch since Allen Iverson did it in 27 consecutive contests with Philadelphia during the 2000-01 season.

When Butler was with the Wizards, Durant averaged 35.0 points and shot 60.0 percent, though he did commit a total of 10 turnovers as Oklahoma City won both matchups.

Durant, though, had a tough time against the Mavs on Dec. 16, matching a season low with 12 points on 4-of-18 shooting in a 100-86 loss. He scored 30 in the teams' only other meeting this season, a 99-98 Dallas win Jan. 15.

The Mavs are 17-2 in their last 19 against the Thunder franchise.

Butler will join a couple of All-Stars in Nowitzki and Jason Kidd, along with star sixth man Jason Terry, to give Dallas a formidable offense. Nowitzki had 22 points for the Western Conference in a 141-139 loss to the East in Sunday's All-Star game.

Haywood provides needed depth in the post behind Erick Dampier. Dallas envisions using both players at the same time to match up against other teams using two big men.

Oklahoma City isn't strong at center with veterans Nenad Krstic and Nick Collison seeing of the time at that position. Instead, the Thunder rely on strong young perimeter players such as Durant, Russell Westbrook and rookie James Harden.

Durant had 33 points and 11 rebounds in Oklahoma City's last game, an 89-77 win over Portland last Tuesday, and scored 15 for the West in the All-Star game.

"The most important thing is that we come back ready to play after the All-Star break," Durant said. "We need to enjoy the break but come back with that mind set ready to fight through these last 30 games."

Mavs go cold in 2nd half as Thunder grab 7th win in row

OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- He said he wasn't, but it sure looked like Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant was a little sluggish after a busy All-Star weekend as he suffered through a 9-for-28 shooting night against the Dallas Mavericks Tuesday.

Normally that might spell doom for the Thunder, but Mavericks All-Star Dirk Nowitzki was just 9-for-22 and the Oklahoma City defense limited Dallas to a season low 32.3 percent shooting.

Oklahoma City went on a 14-0 run in the third quarter to break open a tie game and the Thunder held off a late Dallas charge to win 99-86.

"This is a big win for us," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "We're building our team on defense and that's what we have to do to get better. We talk about defense all the time."

"They do a great job, the Mavericks are a great team but we made it tough on them," Durant said.

Despite his poor shooting night, the Thunder's All-Star still managed to score 25 points, the last two with less than a minute left in the game, to keep his streak of consecutive games with at least 25 alive. It now stands at 26 games, just one shy of Allen Iverson's mark of 27 straight, the second longest in NBA history.

Durant said he was concerned about only one streak.

"Our winning streak, I was just excited that we fought so hard after being down early," he said.

Durant also grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked three shots and dished a couple of assists.

"My teammates did a great job of picking me up when my shots weren't falling and I tried to do some other things, rebound, block shots. The important thing is we got the win," Durant said.

Oklahoma City has now won seven games in a row, the franchise's longest streak since the Seattle SuperSonics won nine in a row during the 2004-05 season.

The win brings the Thunder to within a half game of Dallas for fourth place in the Western Conference standings.

"I'm not gonna talk about playoffs," Brooks said, "but we are picking up our intensity. We're trying to become more consistent with that."

In the early going it was all Dallas. The Mavericks limited Oklahoma City to just 25 percent shooting and 16 points, the second fewest the Thunder had scored in an opening quarter this season.

The Mavs also dominated on the boards with a whopping 21 rebounds in the first quarter, seven of them on the offensive glass, but Dallas didn't gain anything scoring no second-chance points.

But in the second quarter all of that changed. It was as if Oklahoma City's offense woke up from a post All-Star Game slumber. The Thunder shot a sizzling 73.9 percent in the frame and scored 40 points, the most of any quarter this season.

They also held their own with Dallas on the boards, each team grabbing eight rebounds.

Led by a Nenad Krstic slam off a Durant feed and a 3-pointer from rookie James Harden in the last minute of the second quarter, the Thunder took a 56-54 lead into the halftime break.

"Look we had 54 points at halftime so we had enough points, but in the third quarter we couldn't hit shots," said Mavs coach Rick Carlisle. "We had good looks and a lot of shots we normally make. It was frustrating."

Dallas only managed to score 11 points in the third quarter and just 32 for the entire second half.

"We didn't make shots," said Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd. "I think we started pressing and we tried to do it individually to try to stop the bleeding. It just didn't work out."

The Mavericks used their three new players, Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson, but did not use that as an excuse.

"I'm not going to make excuses about the trade," Carlisle said. "It's going to take some time to get them into the flow of things but the only way they're going to learn is to play and I saw a lot of good things from them."

Butler scored 13 points on just 4-for-16 shooting, Haywood had 7 and Stevenson didn't score. Dallas was led by Nowitzki with 24.

Brooks said he was most happy with the way his team played defense.

"That was a very impressive third quarter, just incredible effort," he said. "I thought Jeff Green did a great job on Dirk, crowding him and stabbing and poking at his dribble."

Green, Russell Westbrook and Harden all had 17 for the Thunder.

Oklahoma City's bench scored as many points (32) as the entire Mavs team put up in the second half. The Thunder also outsocred Dallas 40-28 in the paint and 18-7 in transition.

"That was one of our keys to the game," Brooks said. "We wanted to get out and run on them and not let them get set on defense."

The Mavericks face a daunting string of five games in the next week.

Oklahoma City has a couple of days to practice before heading out on a back-to-back road trip to New York and Minnesota over the weekend.
