EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (NBA.com exclusive) -- When you're on track for the worst record in NBA history playing before one of the smallest crowds ever, the All-Star break can seem like an escape more than a respite.
The Nets just hoped they could go away on the winning side for a change.
Instead, the Bucks walloped New Jersey 97-77 before a snow-stalled crowd of 1,016 on Wednesday night. At an IZOD Center that was sometimes so quiet you could hear a pin drop, the Bucks took off on an 18-1 run between the third and fourth quarters and never looked back.
The Nets now go in to the break with a 4-48 mark and an eight-game losing streak. Despite some improved performances of late, New Jersey took a step back just as it's about to take a step away -- which was not what interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe had in mind.
"I'm not sure exactly what happened, but this is the first time in I think eight or nine games where we didn't compete in the second half," Vandeweghe said. "I'm not sure exactly what happened...people looked very tired to me."
There were start-up efforts, of course. Nets guard Devin Harris returned from a sore shoulder with 27 points and nine assists. But the Bucks had much more. Center Andrew Bogut finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Ersan Ilyasova(18 points) and Luke Ridnour (17 points) bolstered the Bucks from the bench.
The Bucks (24-27) will go into the break with their aim on the playoffs, after a poor performance in their 93-81 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night. Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles was hoping his team would overcome the back-to-back, the diminished crowd and the faltering opponent.
"It's always a concern, especially coming off one of our worst performances of the season," Skiles said. "We were not ready last night for whatever reason. I'm sure there are a few players on both teams planning on getting out of here early tomorrow morning and they probably have to wait now [due to the weather]. So there's lots of things, but if you consider that a distraction of any sort of adversity, you probably need to check where your life is really headed."
The Bucks led 68-60 to start the fourth quarter. They scored 10 straight points, thanks in part to a deuce and a trey from Ridnour, to break it open at 78-60 lead with 8:57 left. An Ilyasova 3-pointer with 5:18 left gave Milwaukee a 91-69 lead. The Bucks made 24 of 40 shots in the second half, after shooting a season-low 36.6 percent against the Pistons.
"We decided to start doubling the post and they got some wide-open looks," Harris said. "They buried them. They moved the ball well. They got some good looks. Bogut was tough in that second half, very aggressive. Luke Ridnour did a good job of getting to their stuff and penetrating. They made outside shots. Bottom line."
The Nets now head into their break with a little unrest to go with their abysmal record. Swingman Chris Douglas-Roberts says he is "confused" by his apparent falling out of the Nets' rotation. Douglas-Roberts, who was a starter at the beginning of the season, did not play at all in Tuesday night's 104-97 loss to Cleveland.
Vandeweghe insisted that his decision to sit him against the Cavs was about the flow of the game and "wasn't anything against Chris." But Douglas-Roberts, who is increasingly becoming the subject of trade rumors, spent most of the first half on the bench with a towel on his head. He was finally put into the game with 3:35 left, amid a chorus of "CDR" chants from the Nets' faithful.
"I'm not shocked by it at all, really," Douglas-Roberts said. "Confused, maybe. It is what it is. That's the best thing I can say for it -- it is what it is. Certain things you can't upset yourself over. I figured that out early in the year."
There have also been reports that Vandeweghe and former assistant coach Del Harris had a clandestine agreement to eventually make Harris head coach, without the knowledge or authority of team president Rod Thorn. Harris unexpectedly resigned his post as assistant last week, after just two months with the Nets. Vandeweghe, who shares the same agent as Harris, denied that he and Harris had any kind of agreement about being the head coach in the Nets' future.
