Jazz-Clippers Preview

One month ago, the Utah Jazz were simply trying to move into the top eight in the Western Conference. A remarkable run now has them believing they can capture the second seed for the playoffs.

The Jazz look to extend their season-high winning streak to nine and continue their dominance over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night at Staples Center.

Following a two-point loss at Memphis on Jan. 8, Utah dropped to 19-17 and sat in 10th place in the West. The Jazz, though, have since won 12 of 13 to pull within two games of Northwest Division-leading Denver for the conference's second seed.

Utah's lone loss during this stretch came at Denver on Jan. 17, and it was able to avenge that defeat and take a big step toward catching the Nuggets with Saturday's 116-106 win. Deron Williams and Andrei Kirilenko each had 22 points and Carlos Boozer had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

"It's huge. We've got a chance to get the second (playoff) seed," said Boozer, who sat out the previous three games with a strained right calf. "If we can maintain our streak, we have a chance to get it maybe even before the All-Star break gets here."

Utah's offense is leading the way during the win streak - the team's longest since a 12-game run from Feb. 11-March 10 last season - by averaging 111.3 points on 53.4 percent shooting. The Jazz (31-18) have scored at least 100 points in each of the last 10 contests, their longest such stretch since doing so in 12 straight from Feb. 24-March 16, 1998.

"As a team we're playing really great basketball right now," said Kirilenko, averaging 18.6 points on 72.2 percent shooting during the winning streak. "This is the basketball we're supposed to play."

The Jazz are 26-5 when scoring at least 100 points and their prolific offense could spell trouble for a Clippers team that is 2-21 when allowing at least 100.

These teams haven't met since Oct. 30, when Utah won 111-98 for its 10th victory in 12 games against Los Angeles (21-29). Rarely have the games been close, with the Jazz winning the last five by an average of 18.4 points.

The Clippers are coming off Saturday's 98-81 loss to San Antonio in their first game since Mike Dunleavy resigned as coach and was replaced on an interim basis by Kim Hughes. Los Angeles didn't look much different under Hughes, losing for the 11th time in 15 games.

Chris Kaman had 21 points and Eric Gordon added 20, but they were the only Clippers to score in double figures as the team turned the ball over 21 times.

"We're not going to win games playing this way and as we get better, we'll have more and more confidence in each other and get in better shape," point guard Baron Davis said. "I think our brighter days are definitely ahead of us."

Kaman was named to replace injured Portland guard Brandon Roy in this weekend's All-Star game Monday.

'Motivated' Boozer leads Jazz past Clippers

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- On one end of the court was a player recently named an NBA All-Star, on the other was someone who played like it.

Carlos Boozer of the Utah Jazz lit up Chris Kaman and the Los Angeles Clippers, producing 34 points, 14 rebounds and four steals Tuesday night to lead his team to its ninth consecutive victory, 109-99, at Staples Center.

"I was motivated," Boozer said. "Chris Kaman is very deserving. He's a stud player. He's a load down there and he deserves it. I just came out and played aggressive."

Boozer, who missed three games from Jan. 29 to Feb. 3 with a strained right calf muscle, shot 13-for-17 from the field and finished one point off his season-high point total.

Kaman, who on Monday was named to the Western Conference team for the NBA All-Star game next weekend in Dallas - a replacement for injured Brandon Roy of Portland - was far from stellar in his first game since the announcement.

He scored 19 points on 5-for-14 shooting and was just 9-for-14 from the free-throw line. He also matched his season high with six turnovers.

"We just turned the ball over way too much, especially myself," Kaman said. "We just made it too easy for them."

The Clippers, who allowed 31 points off 21 turnovers in a 17-point loss to the visiting San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night, committed 16 turnovers against the Jazz, which led to 27 points. They committed 10 in the second half, when they were outscored, 57-43.

"We did turn the ball over a ton in the second half," said Clippers coach Kim Hughes, in his second game since taking over for Mike Dunleavy. "When we did turn the ball over, we were punished."

Boozer, meanwhile, seemed like his was just heating up at halftime. He had 13 points and eight rebounds in the third quarter alone, helping the Jazz (32-18) whittle an 11-point deficit to four at the start of the fourth.

"Booze was just a monster tonight," said teammate Deron Williams, who finished with 13 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. With Boozer on the bench to start the final quarter, reserve point guard Ronnie Price scored eight straight points while guarded by Bobby Brown, giving the Jazz their first lead since late in the first half. Utah coach Jerry Sloan also had kind words for reserves Wesley Matthews and C.J. Miles, who combined for 17 points.

"They were able to get a couple steals and hit a couple of 3-point shots that helped swing the momentum," Sloan said.

The Clippers (21-30) matched their season high by converting 28 free throws, but they needed 38 attempts (73.7 percent). Half their misses came in the fourth quarter. Kaman missed a pair that would have drawn the Clippers to within one with 7:58 remaining, then fouled Boozer on the other end for a 3-point play.

Davis then turned the ball over on the other end and fouled Matthews on the ensuing fast break, providing the Jazz with another 3-point play and extending their lead to nine, their biggest advantage through that point of the game.

The Clippers resumed chipping away at the deficit and had an opportunity to cut it to four when Mardy Collins forced a turnover at midcourt with about 80 seconds remaining. He passed the ball ahead to Davis who was alone for a layup, but the ball rolled off the rim and Boozer scored on a fast-break slam on the other end.

"I thought it was a physical mistake," Hughes said of the missed layup. "I have no problems with a physical mistake. He made the right play. He had the ball and he attacked the hoop. Given the opportunity, I would give it to him again." At least Hughes watched his team get off on the right foot. In his debut against the Spurs, the Clippers fell behind, 28-10, after the opening quarter.

After trailing by three points after the first quarter against the Jazz, the Clippers ended the first half on a 15-5 run to take a 56-52 lead into the locker room.

The Jazz will try to make it 10 consecutive victories when they host the Lakers on Wednesday night.
