Pistons-Bucks Preview

The Milwaukee Bucks have climbed back into playoff contention. They're looking to take advantage of a favorable two games before the All-Star break against two of the NBA's worst teams.

The Bucks can record their first eight-game home win streak in six seasons Tuesday night when they meet the Detroit Pistons.

Milwaukee (23-26) has won five of six to move within percentage points of Miami for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks, who have finished last in the Central Division the previous three seasons, are also one game behind Chicago and Charlotte.

Finishing strong the next two games would aid the Bucks' push, and the competition isn't daunting. After hosting Detroit (17-32), Milwaukee plays at 4-46 New Jersey on Wednesday.

"We have a couple more coming up, we have Detroit, which I think we can beat at home and we have New Jersey," Bucks center Andrew Bogut said. "If we can finish before the All-Star break with a winning note, it's going to be great for our confidence coming into the following weeks."

Bogut had 21 points and eight rebounds in Saturday's 93-81 home win over Indiana. He was forced to leave Friday's 114-107 win at New York due to a migraine headache, which he said he was still feeling the effects of against the Pacers.

With rookie leading scorer Brandon Jennings struggling to make 2 of 10 shots for five points, the Bucks had other players step up. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute scored a season-high 18 and Carlos Delfino added 16.

Jennings has failed to score in double digits three times in the last four games after scoring fewer than 10 five times in his first 45 games.

The Bucks have not won eight straight at home since a 10-game run Dec. 10, 2003-Jan. 15, 2004.

The Pistons, meanwhile, have won two of their last eight games - both against the lowly Nets. Swedish rookie Jonas Jerebko made all nine shots for 20 points to lead the way in a 99-92 win at New Jersey on Saturday.

"I just felt good tonight," Jerebko said. "The first 3-pointer went down, and after that, I just kept going. You have to love these games."

Detroit has sandwiched wins over New Jersey around a 107-83 home loss to Indiana on Friday.

"I wish I knew the answer," coach John Kuester said. "After we beat New Jersey, I was so looking forward to the Indiana game, but we didn't play with the intensity we did tonight. We know that we play hard and share the basketball, we give ourselves a chance."

Kuester appears to finally have a healthy roster after Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon and Richard Hamilton all missed plenty of action this season. Former Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva, though, has missed two of the last four games with back spasms that have limited his minutes in the other two.

These teams have split two meetings this season. Milwaukee won 96-85 in its home opener Oct. 31 as Jennings scored 24 while Detroit won 105-96 at home on Dec. 4 by placing six players in double figures.

Healthy Pistons get hot late in road win over Bucks

MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) -- Hard-nosed defense and great execution down the stretch is the kind of basketball that won the Detroit Pistons championships in 1989, '90 and 2004.

On a snowy night in Milwaukee, the Pistons reminded themselves of that kind of basketball again.

Detroit's defense held the Milwaukee Bucks to just 36.6% shooting, and the Pistons made 10 straight shots in the final 7:10 as they pulled away to a 93-81 victory at the Bradley Center before a crowd that was listed at 12,017 but was much smaller thanks to a snowstorm outside.

The Pistons, who have had losing streaks of 13, seven and five this season, improved to just 18-32. But with Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince healthy again, they played much better than their record.

"This is something we can build on," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "I'm telling you, I've been seeing this progression.

"I told Chucky Atkins at halftime, 'This is what I envisioned us being.'"

Point guard Rodney Stuckey, Prince and Gordon shared scoring honors with 18 points, Hamilton added 15 and forward Jason Maxiell added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Rookie forward Jonas Jerebko chipped in 13 rebounds, and it was his jumper from the left corner with 7:08 left that started a steak of 10 straight made shots for the Pistons. Those 10 straight made field goals took the Pistons from a 73-69 lead to a 93-79 margin and put the game away.

"We were executing," said Gordon, who has missed 19 games this season with ankle and groin injuries. "That's something we've struggled with this year so hopefully that's something that follows through and we continue to play like this."

"I was there in '04, so I know what it was like," Kuester said. "Hopefully we can build on something like this."

Gordon made back-to-back jumpers during the Pistons shooting streak.

"We're getting into a good flow, everybody's helping out," Gordon said. "We're starting to play with more rhythm and getting a better feel for each other."

Both teams came out cold. Milwaukee's freeze simply lasted longer.

Milwaukee missed its first five shots but retrieved each miss and eventually scored on its first possession. That, however, was a harbinger of things to come in the quarter.

Ahead, 9-4, the Bucks missed their last 11 shots of the first quarter. Detroit was 2-for-11 before making its next seven shots to close the quarter with a 16-0 run for a 20-9 lead.

The Bucks were just 4-for-25 (16%) in the quarter. Bogut was 0-for-7, Jennings was 1-for-6 and four bench players didn't provide a spark, combining to go 0-for-5.

"It gave us a nice little start," Pistons center Ben Wallace said of the defense in the first quarter. "We started off well. We fell asleep a little bit in the third quarter, but we were able to pick it back up in the fourth and get the win."

Bogut finally got going in the second quarter, and made 5-of-6 shots to help the Bucks pull within 45-38 at the half.

Prince had 11 to lead the Pistons, and Jerebko had 12 rebounds. Bogut had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who finished the half at 15-for-46 (32.6%).

Milwaukee took its first lead since early in the first quarter thanks to a 7-0 run to open the third quarter and a 9-2 run midway through the period. Carlos Delfino's 3-pointer gave Milwaukee a 58-54 lead with 3:27 left in the third.

But the Pistons went on an 8-0 run to take a 64-60 lead before Luke Ridnour's jumper with 3.4 seconds left made it 64-62 heading into the fourth.

Milwaukee never got it back to even, though, as Gordon scored seven and Stuckey and Maxiell had six each in the final quarter.

"We did play great defense in the first quarter and the end of the third and fourth," Prince said. "We moved the ball well tonight, the guys got in a good rhythm and we made shots."

For the Bucks, the loss was a major disappointment. They had won five of their last six entering the game and seven straight at home. The loss dropped them to 24-27, a game behind Miami -- which beat Houston -- for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

"We just couldn't find the basket; we couldn't make shots," said Bogut, who finished with 17 points and 18 rebounds but was just 8-for-21. We had our worst first quarter we've had this season and in the fourth quarter they couldn't miss."

Rookie Brandon Jennings led Milwaukee with 18 points but was just 5-for-16.
