Nets-Pistons Preview

A game against the NBA-worst New Jersey Nets would seem to be the best remedy for a struggling team, but as poorly as the Detroit Pistons have been playing, that may not be the case.

Coming off one of their most embarrassing losses of the season, the Pistons will try to win their first game at The Palace of Auburn Hills in nearly three weeks Saturday night when they go for their seventh straight victory at home against the Nets.

Detroit (16-32), which likely will miss the playoffs this season for the first time since 2000-01, will try to bounce back from Friday's 107-83 defeat at Indiana. The Pistons were trying to build off Tuesday's 97-93 victory at New Jersey, but they shot 39.1 percent from the field against the Pacers and trailed by as many as 31 points in the fourth quarter.

"We're one day on, and one day off,'' said Pistons coach John Kuester. "That's what it's been like. We've got to try and get some consistency.''

The Pistons have been consistently bad at home lately, averaging 86.0 points on 42.1 percent shooting while dropping five in a row. Detroit hasn't lost six straight on its home floor since an eight-game skid from Dec. 30, 2000-Feb. 2, 2001.

The Pistons, though, have won six in a row at home against New Jersey. In the teams' last meeting at The Palace, Detroit clinched its eighth consecutive playoff berth with a 100-93 victory April 10.

Will Bynum, who led the Pistons with 20 points off the bench in that game, has scored 10 in each of the last two contests after being sidelined 16 games with a sprained left ankle.

Since missing the Nets' last four games in January with a sprained right wrist, point guard Devin Harris is averaging 18.7 points and 10.0 assists, including 24 and a season-high 14 assists in Tuesday's loss to Detroit.

Harris had 17 points and eight assists on Friday when New Jersey (4-45) dropped its fifth straight, 96-87 at Boston. New Jersey shot 63.3 percent in the first half and led by one after three quarters but missed 15 of 20 shots in the final 12 minutes.

"I think we played 33 or 34 minutes of really good basketball,'' Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "Lots of energy, high energy. We worked extremely hard.''

New Jersey has lost its last five games by an average of 5.6 points.

"Obviously, we want better than to stand toe-to-toe,'' Harris said. "We want to come out on top."

The Nets will need Brook Lopez to continue playing at a high level if they hope to string together some victories. The second-year center, who had 27 points and seven rebounds Tuesday against the Pistons, is averaging 21.3 and 8.3, respectively, in his last four games in this matchup.

Pistons top Nets for the second time in five days

AUBURN HILLS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Pistons discovered this week what the rest of the NBA already knew: Playing the New Jersey Nets cures a lot of ills.

After getting blown out in Indiana the previous night, the Pistons responded Saturday with one of their best offensive outings of the season. They shot 52.1 percent, the first time in 26 games they made more than half their field-goal attempts, while defeating the Nets for the second time in five nights, 99-92, at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Those are the only two victories Detroit has in its last eight games.

The Nets continued their march toward NBA infamy, falling to 4-46 with their sixth straight loss. They're on pace to set the league record for fewest wins in an 82-game regular season.

Normally reliant on their backcourt for offensive production, the Pistons received unexpected boosts from the big men. Rookie forward Jonas Jerebko made all nine of his shots while scoring 20 points in 24 minutes. Reserve Jason Maxiell contributed nine of his 13 points and four of his six rebounds in the fourth quarter.

Jerebko sat out the fourth quarter because Maxiell, who tied his season high in points, was playing so well.

"Maxiell had it going at the end," Pistons head coach John Kuester said. "We sort of rode him and that's why we didn't put Jonas back into the game. He had two key rebounds and a dunk."

Kuester almost brought back Jerebko but after Maxiell made a baseline shot with 3:12 remaining to give the Pistons a four-point lead, he changed his mind.

"The team played well, so I don't care," Jerebko said of his late benching. "We got off with a win, so it doesn't matter."

Jerebko and Charlie Villanueva also led an unusual 3-point barrage by the Pistons, who entered the game last in the league in that category.

The Pistons made their first seven 3-point attempts, including two by Jerebko and four by Villanueva.

"It opens the court so much," Pistons guard Will Bynum said. "When we can get into the paint and find guys and they're knocking it down, it's tough to defend. ( (Then) you can get into the paint all night."

The Pistons kept moving the ball, regardless of where the shot was taken. Their 29 assists, including 20 in the first half, was a stark contrast to the measly 10 assists they distributed against the Pacers.

Point guard Rodney Stuckey tied a career-high with 11 assists after getting none in Indiana.

"I was so looking forward to the Indiana game but we didn't play with the intensity we did tonight," Kuester said. "We know that when we play hard, share the basketball and play smart, we give ourselves a chance."

New Jersey's misery extended beyond the final result. A nasty midcourt collision in the final minute left Devin Harris and Jarvis Hayes writhing in pain. Harris sprained his left shoulder while Hayes suffered a badly bruised left shin.

"It feels bad now but it is just a muscle injury," Hayes said after X-rays showed no broken bones. "It will be black and blue in the morning. I'll stay off of it, but I hopefully won't be missing any games with it."

Harris (21 points, seven assists) has been dogged by bad luck throughout the season. He has already missed 15 games with wrist and groin injuries.

Reserve Chris Douglas-Roberts didn't play in the second half because of back spasms.

Harris gave the Nets their second and final lead with 7:01 remaining on a 3-pointer. Richard Hamilton put the Pistons back on top 48 seconds later, 87-86, with a jumper. Maxiell soon made the jumper that kept him in the game and he followed that with a dunk for a 93-87 lead.

"Max played big tonight. I haven't seen him dunk in so long, I kind of forgot he can dunk," Bynum said with a broad grin. "He turned into a jump shooter."

New Jersey scored just two points in the final 2:11. It failed to get the ball to Brook Lopez, who attempted just one shot in the fourth quarter.

Lopez scored 12 of his 20 points during the third, keeping the Nets within striking distance. The Pistons also got more aggressive on pick-and-rolls between Harris and Lopez, putting more pressure on the point guard.

"We made some mistakes, silly mistakes that took us out of it," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "The guys are playing hard and I can't fault the effort. We just have to get a little smarter down the stretch and that comes with experience."
