BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Down one heading into the fourth quarter, the Boston Celtics were on the verge of one of their most discouraging victories of the season as they engaged in a game of teeter-totter with the 4-45 New Jersey Nets.
Enter Eddie House and Ray Allen. Barrage Brothers.
Despite campaigning for a spot in the Three-Point Shootout during All-Star Weekend, House was not selected. His percentages don't qualify him as a snub, but Friday night, House played like a man shoved aside regardless, scoring 10 points on four jumpers in the fourth to secure a lead that would seal Boston's win 96-87.
"That's our mentality. Feed the pig, whoever has it going." Rajon Rondo said. "[Doc Rivers'] words."
Boston had more mouths to feed. Though he only scored five of his 26 points in the final period, Allen had his answer for the backers of the "Trade Ray" campaign, hitting on 9-for-17 and grabbing seven boards while saving the Celtics from dropping behind double digits. Strange as it was, Allen was only a point away from a season high.
Allen and House, along with Rajon Rondo's 11 assists, provided the offense. But it was the defense that won the game after nearly handing it away by allowing the Nets to shoot 63 percent in the first half.
"We thought that we could just outscore them," Rivers said. "I didn't say much at halftime. I basically said, 'I don't think I need to talk. We're a defensive team and tonight we want to outscore them.' And I said, 'Good luck.'"
New Jersey took advantage. When Boston's help rotations were caught ball watching, the Nets found big men for dunks. When Boston overcommitted on the perimeter, they drove. And when the Celtics left Brook Lopez in single coverage, the Nets fed their bull for 19 points, though only two of those came during Boston's defensive revolution in the fourth.
"I expect a lot more out of myself," Lopez said. "It's tough going against them because they're so physical and talented."
"Kris Humphries made a couple of baskets on me and I wasn't happy about that," Kevin Garnett said. "I messed up a couple of times. I am human. I will get better at that."
The first half was as dead a half TD Garden has seen all season with the Celtics slow-footed on defense. It was understandable; the Celtics didn't display any sort of energy until well into the third quarter.
"Lackluster, we didn't pick it up probably until about the six or seven mark in the fourth," Rasheed Wallace said of the defense. "But, what my high school coach once said, 'Winners find a way to win.' We dug it out."
That's been a foreign phrase for the Nets, who looked better than a team on pace to set the all-time record for losses.
"We gotta take the bangs on the head to get where we want to be," Devin Harris said. "We're right there and one of these days we'll figure it out."
