NEW YORK -- After scoring 22 points and dishing a game-high eight assists in a 114-107 victory over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, Brandon Jennings pulled off his red and white Under Armour sneakers and flung them toward an eager group of young fans as he headed into the tunnel.
12-year-old Colin Johnson caught one of the shoes and ran away screaming with two of his buddies trailing behind.
"He's a great player," Johnson said of Jennings. "I love Under Armour."
"Hey, I hope today I made his day," the 6-foot-1, 169-pound Jennings said, flashing a huge smile in the corner of the Bucks locker room.
Jennings' change of shoes at the half seemed an apt metaphor for his New York experience.
After scoring just 3 points in the first half while wearing specially designed all-black Under Armours -- known as The Gotham Blur -- Jennings changed sneakers at the half and responded with 19 points after the break. He had 10 points and 4 assists during the decisive third period when the Bucks outscored the Knicks, 36-22, after trailing 59-54 at the break.
"He's good, good little point guard," said an obviously flustered Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni, whose team has lost 10 of its last 14.
With the No. 8 pick in last summer's NBA Draft, D'Antoni and the Knicks could have made Jennings, the former Oak Hill Academy star who made history by skipping college to play in Italy, their point guard of the future.
Instead, the Knicks (19-30) selected power forward Jordan Hill in part because president Donnie Walsh later said he "couldn't get a feel for [Jennings'] game." Hill did not get off the bench against Milwaukee (22-26).
"They've won 21 and we've won 19," D'Antoni said before the game. "I just think [Jennings] will be a good player, he's still a rookie and [he has] a ways to go.
"I don't know if you make the correlation, 'OK, we would've won 23 [with him].' I don't know that. I just know he's a good player and Jordan Hill, maybe five years from now he'll be 10 times better. Could be worse. You just don't know. But it's way too early for any of us to know."
Asked if he derived any special satisfaction from the win, Jennings demurred.
"It's not personal anymore," he said. "I'm over it. I'm happy where I'm at and the staff and Milwaukee gave me the freedom to come in here and do my thing and it's working with me so right now I'm happy where I'm at."
The Knicks led by four points with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter, but the Bucks closed the quarter on a 21-8 run
Jennings posted 10 points in the decisive third. Ersan Ilyasova scored six of his career-high 25 points in the period and Hakim Warrick scored six.
"Ilyasova's the one who killed us," D'Antoni said. "We just didn't play with enough enthusiasm to stop them."
Jennings shot just 8-for-23 from the field, but he used his quickness to set up his teammates and probe the Knicks' defense.
After he sliced through the Knicks early in the fourth, he missed a layup. But the 6-9 Warrick leaped up to dunk home the putback for a 94-84 Bucks lead.
Later, Jennings hit a 3-pointer to pad Milwaukee's lead at 107-94. He penetrated along the baseline for a short jumper to give Milwaukee a 113-105 edge.
"Even though he wasn't shooting too good he kept attacking and staying with it," said Knicks point guard Nate Robinson, who made his first start since March 2009. "As long as you stay in attack mode, you still gotta respect and that's what he did.
Instead of having the young and speedy Jennings at the point going forward, the Knicks switched things up and went with Robinson, who is on a one-year deal and is a natural off guard. He started over Chris Duhon, who had started every other game.
The result? Another loss.
"It's not his fault," D'Antoni said of Robinson. "He was fine. We're still searching. It's everybody, it's not him. It's just that we're not a real cohesive unit for the last few right now, for whatever reason."
Jennings, who dropped a career-best 55 points earlier this year against Golden State, might be glad he isn't in New York.
The Knicks must turn around and visit LeBron James and the Cavaliers on Saturday night. Cleveland has beaten the Knicks six straight times and owns the NBA's best record at 40-11.
"Everybody needs to just let go that the Knicks should've picked me," Jennings said. "It's over and done with. I'm in a great situation right now with the Milwaukee Bucks. I'm happy where I'm at and things are working out."
