TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- On a night when Chris Bosh was struggling, the Raptors had to do some lineup shuffling. Luckily for them, the bench they have been praising for its depth and dependability delivered when it counted, grinding out the108-99 victory over the New Jersey Nets.
"It was an ugly one," Chris Bosh said. "I guess last night took a lot out of us. We didnt have much energy coming off of the bench at the start of the game, but we got it done and thats all that counts".
With DeMar DeRozan, Hedo Turkoglu and Jose Calderon all inactive and Jarrett Jack battling through illness, the Nets looked as though they may be able to pull the victory off with Toronto struggling to find its footing early. Leading by 11 early, the Raptors gave up a 22-2 run spanning the first and second quarters, allowing the Nets to go up by as many as 12.
With the Air Canada Centre crowd beginning to boo on fan night, the Raptors finally woke up, thanks in large part to the energy of Sonny Weems.
"Sonny was energy and beyond tonight," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "Open drives to the basket he finished and he made plays for other people, too. The big thing for us was we needed help on the boards."
Weems finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Douglas-Roberts credited Weems with the energy the Raptors brought to pull away in the game.
"I got my first NBA career double-double, it just feels great," Weems said. "When another team notices you, man that's great. You can go home and you can sleep at night knowing that maybe other teams have you on the scouting report. That's a great feeling.
It was a good night for Weems to break out, with Bosh shooting just 8-for-20 from the floor for his 20 points. While Andrea Bargnani scored 20, Antoine Wright made the most of his third start of the season, scoring a season-high 18 points.
Leading by just one at the break, the Raptors stretched the lead to five going into the fourth, then doubled it within the opening minutes of the quarter. The rest of the way through, the Toronto advantage was never really threatened.
While Devin Harris led the Nets with 15 points, former Raptor Kris Humphries had 13 points and 11 rebounds off of the bench, but it wasn't enough as the Nets racked up another loss when they were unable to sustain the energy that got them the lead in the second quarter.
"We're not good enough to take any plays off", Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "We just let down on energy. We went a couple of minutes where we went one on one, took some quick shots that led to their fast breaks. For most of the game, I thought we were pretty good. It's those lapses for a couple of minutes at a time that hurt us tonight."
In addition to the numbers that will show up on the box score, the energy of Weems flowed throughout his team. Diving into the stands for loose balls and playing above the rim, finishing lobs from his teammates, the Raptors came alive thanks to the play of their second-year swingman and completed their comeback from 12 down after a steal and dunk from Weems.
"Weems came in and was the difference-maker for them," Humphries said. "The big dunk got the crowd going. They were actually booing them for a while."
It was a gutsy performance by Jack, who was a game-time decision after waking up this morning feeling ill. To look at his stat line, you wouldn't know it. He finished with 17 points and nine assists, knocking down a key 3-pointer late, when the Nets appeared poised to make a run.
"The adrenaline took over a little bit and I was able to just play through some things," Jack said. "It took a while for me to kind of get a rhythm. As the game wore on I was able to find a groove. When I woke up, I didn't know if I was going to be able to play, but I told coach and the team I was going to give them everything I had, if it was two minutes, three minutes. Tonight it happened to be 39 minutes thanks to coach taking it easy on me."
With Calderon undergoing diagnostic testing on the ankle he sprained against the Pacers on Tuesday night, the Raptors are thankful to have a few days off before they face the Sacramento Kings on Sunday and are hopeful they will get some of their guys back.
