DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Denver Nuggets had vowed to pay back the Sacramento Kings.
It took a while, though, for them to remember that.
The Kings had beaten the Nuggets two straight times this season in Sacramento, making them the NBA's only team to have more than one win over Denver. The Kings looked ready to make it three straight in taking leads of 16 points in the second quarter and 17 midway through the third quarter Monday night at the Pepsi Center.
But the Nuggets (33-15), who had talked before the game about wanting revenge against the Kings, finally got around to showing why they have the NBA's third-best record, storming back to win 112-109 in overtime.
"My pendulum is a little disappointed in the pride (against a) team that's beaten you twice and how we reacted to the beginning of the game,'' said Nuggets coach George Karl, whose team trailed 64-50 at halftime. "I was probably happy with how we reacted in the second half. This team has given us two miserable nights, and we came out like we were playing an exhibition game.''
The Nuggets finally secured victory when guard Arron Afflalo put them up for good at 111-109 on a 21-footer from the left side with 18.4 seconds left in overtime. In hitting the first game-winning shot of his three-year NBA career, Afflalo grabbed a jump ball won by Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin with just five seconds on the shot clock, moved to his left, and swished the jumper.
"Just tried to take a routine shot because there was enough time on the shot clock,'' Afflalo said. "It feels good. We needed the win.''
Martin sure did his part by scoring a game-high 24 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. The Nuggets won despite star forward Carmelo Anthony missing his fifth straight game due to a sprained left ankle and star guard Chauncey Billups shooting a miserable 6-of-25.
It looked for a while, though, as if the Nuggets were going to drop yet another game against a losing team. The Kings led 72-55 with 6:48 left in the third quarter before they started falling apart.
The Kings (16-31) had seven turnovers the rest of the quarter to finish with 10 for the period. They had 19 for the game to just nine for Denver.
"I don't think the Nuggets woke up until late in the fourth and then in the overtime they were really good with their intensity,'' said Sacramento coach Paul Westphal, whose team was without rookie star Tyreke Evans due to a sore ankle. "I can't give them credit for forcing turnovers. I think I give us blame for not being strong with the basketball. I thought the Nuggets were ready for us to take over the game, but we let them start feeling like they might as well win, and then they did.''
The Nuggets stormed back to take an 89-83 lead midway through the fourth quarter before it was the Kings' turn to come back. They tied the score at 99-99 with 27.9 seconds left in regulation at on a tip-in by center Spencer Hawes, who led Sacramento with 23 points.
Hawes gave the Kings a 109-107 lead on a 3-pointer with 1:36 left in overtime, but they wouldn't score again. Nuggets center Nene tied the score 109-109 on a layup with 1:18 left before Afflalo hit his game winner. After Sacramento guard Kevin Martin missed a 14-foot runner, Billups made a foul shot with 0.7 of a second left to account for the final margin,
"It has been kind of our Achilles heel all year,'' said Hawes, whose Kings also got 22 points from Kevin Martin. "We play hard pretty much all the time, but we don't always play the right way. We started giving them turnovers.''
The Nuggets, who won for the 10th time in 11 games, were very willing recipients.
"We went out there and we were embarrassing our fans and embarrassing ourselves with the effort,'' Billups said of the first half, which got the players chewed out at intermission by Karl.
The comeback was helped by Karl replacing forward Joey Graham to start the second half with a second point guard in energetic Anthony Carter. It also helped that Billups at least made a few shots down the stretch.
Although he scored 23 points, Billups was shooting 1-of-13 midway through the third quarter. He had missed 11 straight before finishing 5-of-12.
"I twisted my ankle (late in the first quarter) and I couldn't get any lift on my shot,'' Billups said. "I couldn't really push off.''
Karl wasn't enthralled with Billups' shot selection. But he couldn't doubt that Billups just "knows how to win games.''
