WASHINGTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Off to a rocky start on their eight-game road trip, the Los Angeles Lakers needed what was once referred to as a "tomato can."
Enter the Washington Wizards.
With Kobe Bryant (26) and Pau Gasol (26) leading the way, the Lakers, losers of two of their last three games prior to Tuesday, easily dispatched of the Wizards, 115-103, at sold-out Verizon Center (20,173).
Owners of the best home record in the league (23-3), the Lakers (33-11) won't return to Staples Center until Feb. 3. Until that time, though, the Lakers want to demonstrate that they can be almost as good on the road as they have been at home.
"It's important because you are going to have to win on the road in the playoffs," said Los Angeles' Lamar Odom, who came off the bench to score 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. "The road gives you a good test and you have to play the right way. At home you can do things the wrong way and feed off the energy of the crowd and still win. That's not the case out here. We want our defense to win games on the road."
At some point on this trip -- they play at Indianapolis today and then visit Philadelphia on Friday -- the Lakers are going to have to play defense to get a win and deal with a hostile crowd.
This, however, was not the case in Washington.
Losers of four in a row for the fifth time this season, the Wizards' matador defense allowed the Lakers to move almost effortlessly in and out of their sets. The end result was the Lakers shooting almost 59 percent from the field -- the highest percentage any team has made against the Wizards this season.
The Wizards placed six players in double-figures scoring, led by Antawn Jamison's game-high 27 points. Caron Butler, who was traded to the Wizards from the Lakers, added 18 points for Washington, which plays at New Jersey on Friday before returning home to face the New York Knicks.
With all the purple and gold in the Verizon Center, the Wizards probably at times felt as if they were the road team. Whenever a Laker sailed unmolested to the basket, thousands in the crowd cheered robustly.
When Kobe Bryant made trips to the free-throw line, he was greeted with chants of MVP. And on one occasion, when Butler fouled Bryant, the fans actually booed Butler.
"I'm not going to let him dunk," Butler said. "I heard the crowd already in anticipation for the dunk. He's a superstar, a super duper star. When a guy like that comes to an arena, people are going to get excited. You only get a chance to see him once a year and you want to see him do something special, even if it's against your home team. I wasn't going to let him get that dunk. That's my boy, but I wasn't going to let him get that dunk."
Asked if he had ever heard that chant before, Bryant, whose team just recently lost to reigning MVP LeBron James' Cavaliers responded, smiling, "in Cleveland."
That the Wizards would put up little fight was eminently clear after the first quarter, when the Lakers connected on 64.7 percent from the floor. The Wizards managed to be within 30-29 of the Lakers after one quarter. But the Lakers played the type of defense that Odom suggested they are going to have to play on the road in the second quarter, forcing the Wizards into seven turnovers.
"I can't fault our effort, but at times in the second quarter we didn't compete around the basket," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said. "Sometimes when you play a team like that you have to show some physicality around the rim, and we didn't do that."
Despite Saunders' comments, the Wizards out-rebounded the Lakers 41-32.
The Lakers, who turned the ball over just nine times the entire night, outscored the Wizards 30-15 in the second quarter. The Lakers' lead only fell below 10 points once in the second half and this was for all of 14 seconds in the fourth quarter.
