OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Oklahoma City Thunder played some of the worst defense in the NBA last season. My how times have changed.
The Thunder (21-16) came into Monday night's game with the New York Knicks (15-22) with the league's 3rd-ranked field goal percentage defense, allowing 43.9%, and they improved upon that against the Knicks.
New York could hit only 38.2% against Oklahoma City, and it wouldn't have been that good without a meaningless 11-for-16 spurt in the 4th quarter of a 106-88 blowout loss to the Thunder.
"This was a very sound, solid defensive effort from the start," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "We did a good job of making them miss a lot of shots."
Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni couldn't argue with that.
"They played really well. They were impressive and long and got after us and I think we were a little shocked at first. I give them a lot of credit. We had two starters that were held without a field goal."
New York forward Danilo Gallinari, who came in averaging 14.5 points a game, was shutout on 0-for-7 shooting and guard Chris Duhon, averaging 9.5 a game, managed just three points, all free throws. He was 0-for-8 shooting.
"The Knicks are one of the league's best offensive teams," said Brooks. "Our defense starts with effort. They understand what we're doing now and our guys deserve a lot of credit."
Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant led all scorers with 30 points, the 18th time this season he's scored 30 or more.
"I just tried to pick my spots," Durant told reporters. "I gotta continue to be aggressive and help out my teammates."
Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook added 17 points and five assists with no turnovers, while rookie center Serge Ibaka had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Nate Robinson came off the bench to lead the Knicks with 19. Jonathan Bender had 16 and Wilson Chandler added 12.
But OKC's defense was the story. The 88 points were the second fewest the Knicks had scored all season and their 38.2% field goal shooting was well below their 45.6% season average.
The Knicks transition game was smothered, with Oklahoma City outscoring New York 23-13 in fast break points.
"That's one of the big things we talked about before the game," Durant said. "They're good in transition and we wanted to make it tough on them and tonight I thought we did."
Oklahoma City's defensive turnaround has been quick and dramatic and it's been a focal point for the team since well before the season started.
"It started in training camp for us," Durant said. "For us to make the big jump that we have it's been the result of a lot of hard work."
The Thunder threatened to run away and hide from the Knicks in the first half, leading by as many as 21 points and settling for a 15-point bulge, 63-47 at the break.
The lead got to 22 in the third quarter but the young Thunder started celebrating too early, trying to make flashy plays that ended up fizzling. Brooks called a timeout after three straight possessions where the Thunder gave the ball away on missed behind-the-back passes or failed alley-oops.
"I thought we tried to be too cute there in the third quarter so I talked to the guys and told them to settle down and just respect the game and it got a lot better after that."
Or worse from the Knicks perspective, as they managed just 15 points in the period.
"We just couldn't score enough," said D'Antoni. "I thought we were surprised at first by their athleticism but then we tried to crawl back into it. We're gonna have nights like this. We just have to throw it down the toilet and get ready for Philly."
The Knicks had come in hot, winning three of their last four and seven of their last 11. Oklahoma City is even hotter now, picking up their eighth win in their last 10 games.
