DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- Don Nelson and George Karl have coached nearly 4,000 NBA games between them, but the final seconds of Tuesday's game must have felt like a lifetime.
Nelson thought his Warriors had the game won when J.R. Smith's 40-foot 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left was far short. Instead, Monta Ellis was called for a foul, Smith hit two free throws and the Nuggets escaped with a 123-122 win.
"It's a tough game to referee," Karl said. "I'm just really happy. You've got to kind of steal a few now and then."
Nelson felt the game was highway robbery.
"Anytime you lose it's hard. You lose at the buzzer it's tough," he said. "That team deserved to win a game. Bad teams just don't get breaks. Let's face it, you just don't get breaks. That was our game."
It certainly seemed that way when Ellis put the Warriors up a point with 15.2 seconds left. After Joey Graham missed a 3-pointer, the ball was tied up with 3 seconds left. Corey Maggette swatted the jump ball to halfcourt where Smith grabbed it and the Nuggets called a timeout with 1.4 seconds remaining.
Kenyon Martin inbounded the ball to Smith, who turned, shot and drew contact, although he didn't know it at first.
"I was walking to the locker room," he said. "I didn't think they were going to call it and then I saw the ref with his hand up. I was thankful he did call it."
Smith, who has struggled from the line this year, calmly sank the first two and intentionally clanked the third. Golden State called a timeout with 0.1 seconds left but Martin swatted away the inbounds pass to seal the win.
"I was willing them in for him," Martin said of Smith's foul shots. "I was willing those things in."
Nelson thought it was a bitter finish to a game his team should have won.
"I'm very upset, obviously," he said. "Too many things went wrong at the end of the game. We played our hearts out and I can't ask any more than what my team gave me. It's too bad it had to end like that."
The final seconds overshadowed big nights for many players. Maggette (35), Martin (27) and Graham (20) all had season-highs in points and seven players scored more than 20 points. Martin had 13 rebounds to notch his ninth double-double of the year, and Ellis had 32 points, the 13th time he's scored 30 or more this year.
"We left it all out on the court tonight," Ellis said.
It ended badly for the Nuggets, too. They came into the game without Chauncey Billups (left groin strain) and Carmelo Anthony (right knee bruise), their top two scorers, and Chris Andersen, who sprained his left ankle in Sunday's loss. Then Nene sprained his right ankle and Ty Lawson sprained his left one in the fourth quarter.
Anthony Carter wasn't on the injury report but he was on the bench in the final moments holding his left hip.
Denver was ready to call Alex English out of retirement to help finish the game.
"Right now our injuries, for some reason, when they've come they've been a little heavier," Karl said.
It's not going to get any easier for the Nuggets. Cleveland comes to town Friday night, but they hope to have at least Billups and Anthony back for that game.
That would be a big boost for a team that's struggling with injuries.
"Hopefully being snakebitten is over and we have time to heal," Smith said.
Even the players that are playing aren't 100 percent.
"Shoot, we're all hurting," Martin said. "I'm toughing it out."
They can take solace in the fact that they're leading the Northwest Division with a 22-13 record. The Warriors have battled injuries this year but haven't fared as well, dropping to 9-24. That's why Tuesday's loss hurts.
"It's real tough," Ellis said. "There's not too much I can say about it. The good thing is there's another game tomorrow. We can put this behind us and move on."
