Knicks-Nets Preview

Improved defensive play has helped the New York Knicks put together a strong month. Another matchup with the woeful New Jersey Nets on Wednesday night could help them enter the new year in strong fashion.

New York (12-19) has won nine of 14 this month, allowing an average of 95.3 points to rank among the stingiest teams in the NBA during that stretch. That's a vast improvement from the Knicks' dismal 3-14 start that saw them give up league-high 109.2 points per game.

The Knicks haven't allowed an opponent to score over 100 points for 11 games in a row, their longest such streak since a 19-game run Feb. 18-March 26, 2001.

Their sudden defensive success was evident again Tuesday night, as they won 104-87 at Detroit while connecting on 51.3 percent from the field and holding the Pistons to 41.8. David Lee led New York with a season-high 30 points, making 13 of 19 shots and pulling down 12 rebounds

"We played pretty good defense (Tuesday), and that's going to be the one thing we can do consistently," Lee said. "I've been shooting the ball well, and it helps everyone on the floor when I shoot because it opens up the floor for the other guys to operate."

Lee has been outstanding from the field over the last four games, sinking 69.5 percent of his shots to average 23.5 points with 14.8 boards.

He leads the team with a career-high 18.8 points per game and 10.8 rebounds.

Lee was impressive in the last meeting with the Nets (2-29), going 12 for 18 from the floor for 24 points while collecting nine rebounds in a 106-97 win on Dec. 6.

The Knicks have won four of the last five visits to New Jersey, winning 98-91 on Nov. 21.

The Nets own the worst record in the league, and haven't shown many signs of improvement. They fell for the 10th straight time Monday, losing 105-89 to Oklahoma CIty after producing just 13 fourth-quarter points.

"I don't know if we ran out of gas or did they turn it up?" interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "Give them credit. We have to find a way to push through that last 12 or 15 minutes when teams make runs."

New Jersey set an NBA record by opening this season with 18 consecutive losses, and ranks last with an average of 89.8 points per game.

The club hasn't come close to snapping their current slide, getting outscored by nearly 15 points per contest.

While the Nets continue their road to missing the playoffs for a third consecutive season, Yi Jianlian has become a bright spot lately.

The forward matched his career high with 29 points and grabbed seven boards against the Thunder. He's averaging 22.7 points and 7.0 rebounds in three games after missing the previous 24 with a knee injury.

Yi, who missed the last two meetings with the Knicks, has been plagued by injuries throughout his two-plus NBA seasons since being drafted sixth overall by Milwaukee in 2007.

Finally healthy, Nets snap skid with win over Knicks

EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- It was a new start for the Nets' starting five.

And perhaps an end to the hopelessness that has darkened their season.

New Jersey scored a convincing 104-95 win over the improved Knicks Wednesday night at the Izod Center, snapping a 10-game losing streak.

Starters Yi Jianlian (22 points), Brook Lopez (21 points, 14 rebounds), Chris Douglas-Roberts (17 points), Devin Harris (17 points, eight assists, seven rebounds) and Courtney Lee (10 points) played their first full game together since the season-opener against Minnesota, somewhat justifying the reasons behind the Nets' 3-29 season.

At the very least, it made for great game tape for recruiting the free-agent class of 2010 this summer.

"This is something to build on," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe declared. "We realize it's one game, but we've played well for a few games in a row now. We just haven't gotten a victory. We needed to break through, and we've got to remember what got us that breakthrough."

The Knicks had entered the game winners of four of their last six and looking for their first 10-win month since 2003. They had also kept opponents under 100 points for 11 straight games, thanks in part to coach Mike D'Antoni's aim to have the Knicks slow their offense down.

But that didn't stop the Nets from igniting their own offense. They connected on 43 of 84 shots (51.2 percent), including a season-high 60 points in the paint. The Nets also outscored the Knicks on the break, 23-11.

"It's tough, but they're just finally getting their guys back and they've had a tough year," D'Antoni said. "You could go through all the problems that they've had. But when they're all there, they're all healthy, they're a talented bunch of guys. They put it together."

D'Antoni also suspected the Knicks, led by Al Harrington's 25 points off the bench and David Lee's 24 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks, lacked a little bit of spirit coming off Tuesday night's emotional 104-87 win in Detroit.

"We came back today and we didn't come out with the necessary toughness defensively," he said. "We were just happy scoring baskets and trading baskets."

"It was one of those nights for us," Harris added. "I don't know if it was a flip of a switch. Hopefully, we see a lot more of it. But we had a good thing going offensively and defensively. Even when we weren't scoring, we were still getting the stops we needed to get. We didn't let our offense dictate how we played defense tonight."

The Nets carried a 60-53 lead into halftime - significant in that they hadn't had anything more than a six-point lead in their previous nine games. New Jersey evidenced actual flow amongst its starters, connecting on 13 of 18 shots in the second quarter and leading by as much as 57-42.

The Nets shot 62 percent in the first half, with Yi putting in 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Yi has been dominant since returning from seven weeks of injury, averaging 22.5 points on .550 shooting in his four games back.

"When I was sitting at home every night, I'd watch the game and think about the games I played before," Yi said. "Some were good. Some were bad. I'd think about how I can do better."

The Nets created more space with a 12-2 run to start the third quarter, with New York missing its first seven shots. A Lopez dunk midway through the period gave the Nets a 72-55 lead - their biggest advantage since the aforementioned Game 1 of the season against the Wolves.

Also impressive for New Jersey was its balanced attack. Four out of its five starters took 15 or 16 shots each, with Lee taking 12 shots.

"I do think it's big," Vandeweghe said. "What would be really big for us is when we can get a good rotation for a number of weeks, so the guys get used to playing with each other again, when everyone's healthy for a significant amount of time so everybody gets a comfort level. I thought the guys played well. They shared the ball. They played very hard defense. They helped each other. It was nice to see."

It was actually Douglas-Roberts who was the latest Net starter to be injured, but he returned despite still having a sore ankle. For the player who was most vocal in the Nets' losses, it was a nice change of pace.

"I think we'll be fine now," he said. "I really see us going on the up and up."

Lopez did note one drawback in having a complete team, however.

"I looked down the bench at one point and there must have been seven-eight guys in sweats," he said. "It was good to see, but it was crowded, unfortunately."
