Thunder-Wizards Preview

The Oklahoma City Thunder won eight times on the road all of last season. They have a chance to surpass that total before the New Year.

The Thunder seek their fourth straight victory overall and third in a row over the Washington Wizards when they conclude a quick two-game road trip Tuesday night.

After relocating from Seattle, the Thunder went 8-33 on the road last season en route to a 23-59 overall finish.

Sparked by Kevin Durant's season high-tying 40 points and 19 from former Nets center Nenad Krstic, Oklahoma City (16-14) improved to 8-7 away from home with Monday's 105-89 victory over New Jersey. It also gave the Thunder their first three-game winning streak of 2009-10.

The Oklahoma City franchise has not won four in a row since the Seattle SuperSonics did it April 2-9, 2006.

"I was so pleased with the how we played in the fourth quarter,'' Durant said after the Thunder held the Nets to 13 points in the final 12 minutes. "No matter if I got 40 or not, we played so hard in the fourth and limited their touches, limited them to one shot and out and we got some easy baskets. That was a great effort in the fourth.''

Oklahoma CIty improved to 13-2 when holding the opponent to fewer than 100 points.

"That's what we are," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks, whose club may face a challenge by a Wizards team averaging 106.2 points in five home games this month. "When we defend it gives us a chance to win, and Kevin was really good.''

Durant, averaging 28.2 points, scored 35 and Russell Westbrook added 26 with seven assists in a 127-108 victory over the visiting Wizards on Nov. 20 - an effort that remains the highest scoring output for the Thunder since the franchise moved.

While Oklahoma City needs one victory in its next two games to ensure a winning record through December for the first time since 2004-05, Washington (10-19) keeps falling further below .500.

The Wizards dropped the final two games of their just-completed three-game trip. They rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit but fell 116-111 in overtime to Memphis on Monday night.

Gilbert Arenas had 30 points and tied a season high with five 3-pointers, and Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler added 24 points apiece, but the Wizards fell nine games below .500 to match their low-water mark of the season.

"We just couldn't get a break,'' said Arenas, who committed 18 turnovers on the road trip. "We are just not getting the breaks that we need. They are all going against us.''

After missing both games against Oklahoma City last season due to injury, Arenas had 23 points and eight assists in last month's loss.

Jamison scored 29 points while teammate Andray Blatche had 19 and a career-high 15 rebounds in the Thunder's last visit to the Verizon Center, a 104-95 Wizards victory Dec. 27 last season.

Westbrook is averaging 19.0 points, 7.7 assists and 5.0 boards during the Thunder's current winning streak.

Oklahoma City has won eight straight games versus teams with sub-.500 records.

Thunder continue to rise in 110-98 rout of Wizards

WASHINGTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- One team is loaded with young, talented, athletic players who approach the game with wide-eyed joy. The other has a roster with all stars and veterans, healthy for the first time in years but playing rather lack luster.

And after the precocious Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Washington Wizards, both coaches and players on each side did an excellent job of summing up the state of their teams.

Washington coach Flip Saunders, the new guy in town brought in to lead the Wizards back to the playoffs after last year's 19-win debacle, excoriated his group of underachievers in a fashion that hasn't been heard in these parts in quite some time.

"This team needs a mindset change," Saunders said of the Wizards following their 110-98 home loss to the Thunder in front of 17,152 at Verizon Center. "Until we make a commitment we can't stop anybody out there. They got 46 uncontested shots and I've never seen that in a game. That team is playing a lot better but that is not the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Los Angeles Lakers out there. Until we decided that it hurts to keep losing, we've got no chance."

Saunders is on to something. For starters, the Wizards' matador defense played a huge role in the Thunder making 72.2 percent (13 for 18) of their shots in the fourth. Healthy after years of injuries to key players, Washington had hoped that this would be a season that featured a return to the postseason. Instead, the Wizards have lost 10 of their last 13, including three in a row, and are embedded in last place in the Southeast Division."

Conversely, Oklahoma City is proving to be one of the more entertaining young teams in the league. With an average age of 25 years and 130 days on opening night, the Thunder is the second-youngest team in the league. However, in recent days they have not played like it.

Last night, as they won their fourth game in a row - something they last did in April of 2000 -- the Thunder took charge in the fourth quarter, when close games are decided in the NBA.

The Thunder 's hot shooting -- they were also 3 for 4 from behind the 3-point arc in the fourth -- enabled them to turn what had been a seemingly competitive 76-76 game after three quarters into a laugher, outscoring Washington 34-22.

While much of the success of the team has been attributed -- and rightly so -- to forward Kevin Durant, last night the burgeoning superstar scored 31 of his game-high 35 points through three quarters but was relatively invisible in the fourth quarter. Rather than bask in the fact that his recent offensive outburst had given him a 35.7 scoring average over the last three four games, Durant chose to focus on what he thought he hadn't done against the Wizards.

"I mean, I could be more aggressive," straightening his tie and with a serious facial expression, said. "I'm missing shots I should have made and I wasn't very disciplined with my follow though. It's just being smarter."

Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks commented just before the doors to the visiting locker room swung open that he wanted the team to continue to stay focused, so he would have been delighted to hear what came out of Durant's mouth next. "I just have to get back to work tomorrow," Durant said. "The good thing is my teammates picked it up. We're not satisfied with where we are. We are not too happy. We are playing pretty decent. In the back of or minds we know this is the first time the team has won four in a row. We can't let that creep into our thoughts." Durant finished with 11 rebounds. Jeff Green, who like Durant grew up in the Washington D.C. area, had 18. Russell Westbrook finished with 10 points and 10 assists. Antawn Jamison led the Wizards with 28 points on 12 for 25 shooting. Gilbert Arenas finished with 24 points and all of the Wizards' starters finished with double-figures scoring. Washington's Caron Butler sat in front of his locker taking questions patiently, mostly shaking his head in despair and confusion over what has become of the Wizards. "You have to tip your hat to them; they did a great job," he said of the Thunder. "But for us it's been rough. You are not supposed to take your work home with you in this business but that's what we're doing. Losing sleep and thinking about the opportunities we had but haven't taken advantage of. Now we're in a foxhole sitting at 10-20. We have to claw, scratch and try to do whatever we can just to get back to .500."
