Knicks-Pistons Preview

When they opened the season, the Detroit Pistons probably didn't envision it would be almost two months before they would get three of their top players on the floor together again.

Although the returns of Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Ben Gordon couldn't stop Detroit from matching its losing streak of the season, the Pistons will try to avoid dropping their eighth straight game Tuesday night when they face the visiting New York Knicks.

The Pistons (11-19), who also lost seven straight from Nov. 15-27, has had just two eight-game slides since January 1995. The most recent was from Feb. 8-25.

To get back in the win column for the first time since Dec. 12, Detroit hopes its second game with a healthy lineup will go better than the first.

On Sunday, Hamilton, Prince and Gordon played together for the first time since the season opener on Oct. 28, but the Pistons lost 102-95 at Toronto. The three combined for 39 points, but Hamilton and Gordon were 10 of 35 from the floor while Prince was 4 of 8.

Hamilton had missed 26 of the previous 28 games with a sore hamstring while Prince had been out since Oct. 31 with a sore back. Gordon came off the bench for his first minutes since Dec. 6 after being sidelined by a sore left ankle.

Pistons rookie head coach John Kuester realizes it will take some time for them to get into a rhythm.

"It's an adjustment for those guys," he said. "It is going to take some time. All of our guys are getting acclimated to them again. But it was refreshing to watch them play and see how they can compete."

The trio gave a slight boost to a struggling offense that hasn't reached 100 points in the last seven games, and has shot 35.2 percent in the last three.

Detroit was able to take some positives away from Sunday's game, which came four days after being held to 64 points in a home defeat to the Raptors. The Pistons had lost the previous four by double-digit margins and they came back from 19 points down at the half.

"We had our chances tonight," Gordon said. "With all the injuries and guys coming back, I still thought we had a chance to win the game."

While the Knicks (11-19) are dealing with their own offensive struggles, they have put together a stingy defense. They held a 10th straight opponent to fewer than 100 points on Sunday - the first time since a 19-game run from Feb. 18-March 26, 2001 - but lost 95-88 to San Antonio.

It was the third straight game New York was held below 90 points. Still, New York averages 100.7 points.

"I didn't think it was a problem about scoring," David Lee, who matched a season-high 28 points and had 10 rebounds, told the Knicks' official Web site. "We just didn't get enough stops and they executed well."

With the loss, New York finished with a 3-2 homestand during which Lee averaged 21.0 points and 14.6 rebounds. The Knicks, who are beginning a three-game road trip, are 4-9 away from home.

New York has won two of its last three visits to the Palace of Auburn Hills after losing 10 straight.

Lee shows his All-Star stuff as Knicks paste Pistons

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (NBA.com exclusive) -- David Lee has already established himself as a double-double machine. The next stop could be an All-Star appearance.

Lee, the New York Knicks' center, has been on a tear recently and his performance against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday was arguably his best this season. He scored a season-high 30 points, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and had five assists as the Knicks rolled past the reeling Pistons 104-87.

Ben Wallace, who has been one of the Pistons' few bright spots this season, couldn't handle Lee one-on-one. Neither could backup Chris Wilcox or any of the other Pistons who switched onto Lee, as the New York's quickness and ball movement had Detroit scrambling all night. The Pistons, whose only lead was 2-0, have lost a season-high eight straight.

"I think it helps everyone on the floor when I shoot it when I'm open because it extends the defense and it gives Wilson (Chandler), (Chris) Duhon and those guys room to operate," said Lee, whose team snapped a two-game losing streak. "I have continued confidence out there and I just have to gauge it. I've been shooting well early in games but if I'm 0-for-6, then I'm not going to shoot the next three possessions."

Over the last six games, Lee has averaged 22.5 points on 64.4 percent shooting and 14.2 rebounds. He notched a double-double in each of those games and has 66 for his career. He's become the focal point of the offense, giving the Knicks a consistent interior presence to complement their collection of 3-point gunners.

On Tuesday, Lee had four layups and a tip-in during the first quarter. He later gouged the Pistons with postups, jump shots and passes from the key.

"David has been like this ever since I've been here and everyday, he gets better," Chandler said. "I've watched him grow over the years and I think that he is an All-Star, personally."

Chandler could have passed himself off as an All-Star, too, with his slashing moves to the basket and mid-range jump shooting. He had 23 points, nine rebounds and three steals as the Knicks shot 51.3 percent.

The Knicks, who began a three-game road swing that also includes stops at New Jersey and Atlanta, reached the 100-point mark for the first time in eight games. They were held below 90 points in losses to Miami on Christmas Day and San Antonio on Sunday.

"I thought they were really the same shots that we got against San Antonio and Miami but we didn't knock them down," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Tonight, we did. I thought our defense was strong as well but you have to give them a break, they are just getting back and not in their rhythm."

Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Ben Gordon played their second consecutive game after extended injury absences but are still scraping off the rust. Hamilton missed 13 of his first 14 attempts and was 5-for-21 while scoring 16 points. Prince contributed just two points, three rebounds and no assists in 25 minutes while Gordon had 17 points and was 6-for-9.

"It's not something we expect to happen overnight, especially with me and Tayshaun being out as many games as we have, and BG being out as many games as he's been out," Hamilton said. "This is a game you just want to throw away but we're still in good spirits."

It certainly wasn't a spirited defensive effort by a club that should have been feeling a sense of urgency. The Knicks did a superior job of spreading the floor and the Pistons were slow on their rotations. They were also uncharacteristically out-hustled in the rebounding department. Ranked No. 2 in the league in rebounding, the Pistons lost that battle, 44-33, to a club that was ranked 28th in that area.

"We had too much slippage," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "(That) team really took it to us and I'm not sure what we were thinking because in the NBA, you have to be aggressive in all phases."

The Pistons also had a losing streak of seven games earlier this season. The eight-game skid matches their longest of last season. They play another struggling Central Division team, Chicago, Thursday afternoon.

"We have a lot of basketball left but we have to take advantage of all these opportunities," Kuester said. "(Just) getting people back does not put you in a position to win. What does is your effort, your energy and your understanding of the game plan."
