Thunder-Nets Preview

While the Oklahoma City Thunder are exceeding expectations so far, the New Jersey Nets have taken over the role as the league's doormat.

The Thunder look to win a season-high third straight Monday night when they visit the Nets, who look to avoid losing their 10th straight.

Despite going 23-59 last season after relocating from Seattle, Oklahoma City (15-14) had reason for optimism when it began 2009-10 thanks to Kevin Durant.

The second overall pick in 2007 behind injury-prone Greg Oden has lived up to the hype, averaging 27.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while leading the surprising Thunder, who are looking for the franchise's first winning record through December in five years.

Durant had 30 points in a 98-91 win over Charlotte on Saturday, while Russell Westbrook added 22 and six assists. The second-year point guard was 10 of 18 from the floor, and is averaging 20.7 points and 8.7 assists over the last three games.

"He did a great job running the team," coach Scott Brooks said of Westbrook. "He gave us a lot of opportunities to score, he set our guys up for good shots. Thirty-five minutes with zero turnovers? I'll take that every night."

The win was Oklahoma City's second straight after a three-point road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. After beating Phoenix the next night, they began a much easier stretch in their schedule starting with the Bobcats. After visiting New Jersey, the Thunder travel to Washington.

The Thunder have won seven straight against teams with losing records. Durant is averaging 31.3 points in 12 games against opponents that are below .500.

He is also averaging 17.8 points and shooting 40.7 percent against the Nets (2-28) over four career games, but the Thunder have gone 1-3.

Although Oklahoma City has lost its last two visits to New Jersey, it will certainly be favored. The lowly Nets opened the season with a league-record 18-game losing streak and last won Dec. 8 at Chicago.

New Jersey fell 98-93 to Houston on Saturday. The Nets took their first lead since the game's opening basket early in the fourth quarter, but missed crucial shots in the final minutes and were outrebounded 51-39.

"You try to learn a lesson from these close ones," said Devin Harris, who had a team-high 19 points. "We're just a few shots away. It was still a meaningful game with 2 minutes to go. We've got to be proud of the way guys keep fighting."

Only nine of New Jersey's losses have been decided by fewer than 10 points, but the last two have been by a combined nine.

The Nets played a second straight game without second-leading scorer Chris Douglas-Roberts (16.4 ppg), due to an ankle injury. Rafer Alston, who is averaging 10.0 points, also missed his second straight with a sore back.

It's uncertain if either will be available Monday to a lineup that recently got Yi Jianlian back after he missed nearly two months with a knee injury. Jianlian, who had 22 points off the bench Wednesday in a loss to Minnesota, had 17 and six rebounds while starting versus the Rockets.

Durant plays big in 105-89 win over Nets

EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- One team had yet to win three games in a row and the other had yet to win three games, period.

By the end of the Thunder's 105-89 win over the Nets on Monday night at the Izod Center, it wasn't difficult to see which of the two identity-seeking teams was further along and happened to have a superstar in its grasp.

Behind Kevin Durant's season-high tying 40 points, Oklahoma City notched its third straight win, while New Jersey managed to blow hard-fought leads and had its familiar fourth-quarter fade to drop its 10th straight game and fall to 2-29 overall. "He really knows how to play basketball," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said of Durant.

"He reminds me of George Gervin when I was playing - just a very, very difficult cover. He can win a game all by himself."

Durant definitely had help - from both teams. Former Net Nenad Krstic added 19 points and Thunder guard Russell Westbrook had 16 points and 10 assists.

And then there was the Nets' failure to kick it up a notch once the Thunder took the initiative. They pulled away with a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter, thanks to nine consecutive missed shots by the Nets.

Durant's wicked baseline slam, giving Oklahoma City a 93-78 edge, seemed to be the game's exclamation point. Durant's 40 came on 15 of 22 shooting and 10 of 12 from the line.

"I was so pleased with how we played in the fourth quarter," Durant said. "No matter if I had 40 or not, we played so hard in the fourth and limited their touches. We shot them out and made some great baskets."

Yi Jianlian led the Nets with 29 points, tying a career-high. Devin Harris finished with 11 points and 11 assists, while Brook Lopez struggled in his second straight game with 10 points. Lopez, in fact, left without speaking to the media after the game.

The Nets did manage a rare 3-point lead in the first half, but still trailed the Thunder at halftime, 61-55, thanks mostly to Durant. The third-year forward was 10 of 12 in the first half, including a running 11-footer at the buzzer.

Durant entered the game fourth in the league in scoring (27.8 ppg) and the second youngest NBA player, behind LeBron James to reach 4,000 points.

"You know what? He's getting better," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "His offense is only getting better...and that's a pretty scary thought for a kid so young. He's learning how to score in easier ways this year. Last year, he just used his abilities. Moreso this year, he's using the tricks in the offense to create points for himself."

The Nets recaptured a 72-70 lead midway through the third, but the Thunder outscored them the rest of the quarter, 14-4. Krstic and Durant combined for 12 of those points as Oklahoma City took a cozy 84-76 advantage into the fourth quarter.

New Jersey has evidenced an inability to build and save leads in its current losing streak. It has not established any more than a six-point lead since a 105-89 loss to Golden State on Dec. 9.

"We've got to find a way to match their intensity," Harris said. "We do it at times in the games, but when it comes to the second half through the fourth quarter, we sort of lose that intensity to fight back. We do it in the first quarter. We've done it in the third quarter. But we've got to find that extra gear in the fourth quarter."

The Nets added a new injured player to their season of woe. Center Josh Boone was diagnosed with a bruised left knee. He's listed as day-to-day. Chris Douglas-Roberts (sprained right ankle) and Edjuardo Najera (sore back) remained out, as did forward Jarvis Hayes. But Hayes, who has played just two minutes this season due to a strained left hamstring, deemed himself "really close" to returning. Perhaps as soon as Wednesday's game against the Knicks.

"[The Nets coaching staff] just want me to get more practice time," Hayes said
