Spurs-Knicks Preview

The San Antonio Spurs usually beat the New York Knicks, but their last two visits to Madison Square Garden have been very competitive.

The teams have gone to overtime each of the previous two seasons at MSG and meet Sunday night with the Spurs trying to sweep a two-game trip.

San Antonio (16-11) won seven straight over New York (11-18) before the Knicks earned a 112-107 overtime win Feb. 17. New York overcame 26 points and 15 rebounds from Tim Duncan, also ending its 10-game skid against the Spurs with Duncan in the lineup.

The Spurs rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit the previous season in MSG, winning 99-93 on Feb. 8, 2008, as Duncan had 21 points and 14 boards. Duncan has eight double-doubles in 10 career regular-season games at New York.

Last season's victory for New York may not mean much in 2009-10 since Nate Robinson keyed the win with 32 points, including six in the extra session. Robinson has not played in the last 12 games for the Knicks, and his agent says the guard wants to be traded.

The Spurs will be trying to continue their success against Eastern Conference opponents. Duncan scored 26 points as San Antonio never trailed in a 112-97 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday to improve to 7-2 against the East.

San Antonio led by 25 points heading to the fourth quarter, and no player logged more than Duncan's 32 minutes in preparation for Sunday. The Spurs shot a season-high 59.7 percent.

"We moved the ball real well and gave guys an opportunity to make shots," Duncan said. "Hopefully, that will be contagious and continue to happen."

Antonio McDyess scored 14 and fellow reserve Manu Ginobili added 13 as San Antonio finished with 51 bench points. The reserves made 22 of 29 shots (75.8 percent).

"That's ridiculous," coach Gregg Popovich said of the bench's shooting percentage. "That's not going to happen very often. It happened tonight and obviously it helped us keep the lead."

Ginobili matched a season high with eight assists. He had a total of 14 points and eight assists in his last two games.

New York had a three-game win streak snapped Friday with a 93-87 home loss to Miami. It matched the Knicks' lowest point total of the season and they shot a season-low 17.9 percent (5 of 28) on 3-pointers.

"I think we missed a lot of shots that were open shots. I think we just missed them," said forward Danilo Gallinari, who had a team-high 26 points.

David Lee continued his strong homestand with a fourth straight double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Lee is averaging 19.3 points and 15.8 boards in that span.

"If we were hitting our shots today, we could have won by 25 points," Lee told the Knicks' official Web site. "But, I'm not really concerned about our shooting."

The Knicks also had a six-game home win streak snapped. After Sunday, they start a three-game trip and play six of their next eight on the road.

Spurs pull away late to top Knicks in New York

NEW YORK (NBA.com exclusive) -- Back-to-back games are hard enough on your own court. The San Antonio Spurs just had two away games in two nights, and had the added pleasure of a flight from Milwaukee that didn't get into New York until three in the morning. After the transfer to the hotel and crawling into bed, it was after four.

But as Manu Ginobili put it after a 95-88 win over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the win wasn't a matter of playing with their legs, but rather with their heads.

The game was in doubt until the very end, as Knicks center David Lee grabbed a pass from point guard Chris Duhon and tied the game at 82-82 on a layup with 4:25 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Spurs played smart, exploiting a few defensive mismatches to score the next six points and pull away for the win.

"I thought we did good overall," said guard Tony Parker, who led the Spurs 22 points. "We were playing solid defense and we were moving the ball, our bench was playing pretty good. ...Manu made some big shots and Tim (Duncan) made some big shots. I thought it was a great team win."

It was the second game for the Spurs in as many days. On Saturday, San Antonio beat the Bucks 112-97 in Milwaukee. Now 17-11, the Spurs have a reason to feel optimistic as they continue to fold new players like Antonio McDyess and DeJuan Blair into a lineup that includes players who were a big part of San Antonio's championship years.

"We're starting to build on something and it's just a really good game to learn even more about ourselves," said Spurs veteran Tim Duncan, who had 13 points and seven rebounds.

"The whole season is about jelling for us and having to adapt to a new team," Parker said.

The Knicks (11-19) stayed with the Spurs throughout the second quarter, and David Lee had a steal under the Knicks basket and a layup just as the buzzer sounded the end of the first half, as the Spurs held a 50-47 lead.

Lee led the Knicks with 28 points and 10 rebounds, and scored eight of New York's final 15 points.

"He was really great tonight," said Parker. "He shot the ball really well, I think he has improved tremendously. Every year I see him he gets better."

But Lee's ballhawking couldn't carry the Knicks. For the second straight game, the Knicks shot poorly from the 3-point arc, in this case hitting just two of 16 attempts. It's been an ongoing issue for the team.

"We are playing a really good team that is playing well so you have to give them credit," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said, "but at the same time we missed foul shots, missed lay-ups, missed wide open 3s. If you don't make them against this team, you are not going to have that many chances to beat them."

D'Antoni pointed out that despite the poor shooting, the Knicks have been playing strong defense and he predicts that the offense will eventually get back in line.

As for San Antonio's back-to-back games, if anyone on the team had any complaints about the turnaround, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich wasn't interested in hearing them. Even though he made a few comments himself.

"I don't say that to the team, we just tell them, shut up and play," Popovich said.
