Although they're centered around one of the NBA's most prolific scorers, the Miami Heat would perhaps prefer to be thought of as a defensive-minded team.

The Heat hope to hold a third straight opponent under 90 points - and earn a third consecutive victory - as the sputtering Indiana Pacers visit Miami on Sunday.

While Miami guard Dwyane Wade led the NBA with 30.2 points last season and has recaptured that form lately by averaging 29.0 in his last three games, a stingy defense has had an equally big effect on the team's recent success.

After hitting a low point by allowing 118 points in a blowout home loss to Memphis on Dec. 13, the Heat (15-12) have responded by winning four of five, holding opponents to 88.0 points per game and 43.7 percent shooting in that stretch.

Miami followed up Wednesday's 80-70 lockdown of Utah with a 93-87 Christmas Day win over the New York Knicks, who matched their lowest point total of the season.

"We're not a team that can come out and spar and see the pace of the game and then get going," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Thats just not our personality.

"We have to be on edge however we get there, Ray Lewis-style," the coach added, referring to the Baltimore Ravens' star linebacker. "We have to dictate the energy and the tempo of the game from the beginning."

Indiana had trouble scoring against the Heat on Oct. 30, losing 96-83 at home to Miami as Wade went to the free throw line 19 times and scored 32 points.

Heat center Jermaine O'Neal had 22 points and 12 rebounds in that game, both highs among his four meetings with the Pacers since they traded him to Toronto before last season.

Against the Knicks, Wade had 30 points, reaching that number for just the second time since Thanksgiving. The banged-up star has dealt with wrist and back problems this month, but the Heat hope his recent surge is a sign that he's feeling better.

He added nine rebounds, five assists and four steals Friday, scoring 10 points in the final six minutes of the game.

"There was a point when I walked out of the huddle our assistant coach, Coach (David) Fizdale said, 'Take us home,' and I just had that mentality," Wade said. "Early in the game I was picking my spots ... at that moment, I said it was time for me to be a little bit more aggressive."

Wade should get plenty of opportunities against Indiana, which has dropped five straight and 16 of its last 20. Playing their 10th consecutive game without leading scorer Danny Granger, the Pacers lost 110-98 at home to Atlanta on Saturday.

With the starters struggling, Indiana coach Jim O'Brien gave bigger minutes than usual to some of his bench players, as Luther Head scored a season-high 19 points, matching rookie Tyler Hansbrough and Troy Murphy for the team high.

"I went with the guys who I thought gave us the energy to climb out of the hole," O'Brien said, "but they didn't have enough to come back and get the win."

Indiana (9-19) has even bigger issues on the road, where it has lost 10 of 11.

Wade has 25 as Heat scorch the Pacers at home

MIAMI (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Miami Heat aren't yet in position to set their sights on Atlanta for the No. 4 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. But the Heat, which currently holds the No. 5 seed, can take a slight break from looking in its rearview mirror.

That's because with Sunday's 114-80 victory over Indiana, Miami (16-12) has maintained its breathing room, which in this case means its three-game lead over sixth-seeded Toronto (15-17). The Raptors defeated Detroit, 102-95, earlier Sunday.

"What's more realistic right now is to create separation for who is behind us," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

For Indiana (9-20), this was its sixth consecutive loss and its 13th loss in its last 16 games. The Pacers, who have now played 10 games without All-Star forward Danny Granger (right foot), have given up 100 or more points in 11 of those 16 games.

"We got dominated in every facet of the game," veteran forward Troy Murphy said.

The Heat, who led by as many as 40 points in Sunday's laugher over the struggling Pacers, are now on a three-game win streak and have won five of their last six games.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade scored 25 points, handed out six assists and added three steals. He was one of four Heat players to score in double digits. Center Jermaine O'Neal (19 points), forward Michael Beasley (16 points), and forward Udonis Haslem (13 points, nine rebounds) joined the party on offense. Actually, considering Miami had 13 dunks it was more of a jamboree.

But defense is where the Heat won this game. Miami held Indiana to just 30.7 percent shooting and took advantage of 20 Pacers turnovers to score 20 points off those miscues.

The Heat, who out-rebounded Indiana, 55-40, have held their last three opponents (Utah, New York and Indiana) to 87 or fewer points.

"That's our identity," said Miami forward Quentin Richardson, who finished with eight points, nine rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.

Miami held a 30-17 rebounding edge at halftime, and the Heat shot 54.3 percent from the field while holding Indiana to 32.5 percent. So it's little wonder Miami, which led by as many as 24 points in the second quarter, held a 66-44 halftime lead.

It marked Miami's largest halftime lead since it led Orlando, 66-37, on Jan. 30, 2007.

When Miami took a 103-63 lead on Haslem's jumper it marked the Heat's largest lead of the season.

The enormity of a season gone badly has Pacers coach Jim O'Brien re-thinking some things.

"I don't know if we have enough speed in our starting lineup," he said. "Clearly we're not getting it done. The last couple of games we haven't scored well. We did a good job with that unit to start out the previous three games, but right now it's not working."

Indiana, which was led by Murphy's 16 points, had a statistical oddity. Rookie Tyler Hansbrough had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) without making a field goal. Hansbrough was 10-for-10 on free throws but 0-for-5 from the field.

Of course, the Heat had their own statistical oddity in that Beasley took his first charge of the season late in the game, setting off a noteworthy celebration on the court and in the locker room.

"Last year it took me like 60 games, so I'm ahead of schedule," Beasley said with a smile.
