Pistons-Raptors Preview

Though largely a defensively challenged team, the Toronto Raptors are enjoying one of their best stretches of the season. Facing the injury-riddled Detroit Pistons certainly hasn't hurt.

After holding the Pistons to one of their worst offensive performances, the Raptors look to sweep this home-and-home series Sunday and win four straight for the first time this season.

Toronto (14-17) has been terrible defensively, giving up an Eastern Conference-worst 106.2 points per game. The Raptors had allowed less than 88 points only once all season entering a matchup with the Pistons (11-18) on Wednesday night, but held them to 27.9 percent shooting in a 94-64 victory.

It was the second-fewest points allowed by the Raptors, who surrendered 54 in a win over Miami on March 19, 2008. Toronto, which snapped an 11-game skid at Detroit, improved to 11-0 this season when holding teams under 100 points.

The Raptors have played some of their best defense over their three-game winning streak, limiting each team to 95 points or fewer and a combined 9 of 47 from 3-point range (19.1 percent). Toronto has held three straight opponents under 100 points for the first time this season.

The Raptors held the Pistons to their lowest point total since the shot clock was implemented for the 1954-55 season. Detroit had 64 points in a loss to San Antonio on Feb. 21, 1999, and in a win over Utah on March 13, 2005.

With Ben Gordon (ankle), Richard Hamilton (hamstring) and Tayshaun Prince (back) all out, Pistons starters combined to shoot 11 for 42 (26.1 percent) in the team's sixth straight loss.

Detroit isn't likely to get much help soon. Hamilton and Prince will not play, and Gordon is listed as questionable.

"That's not a reason for us to play like this," point guard Chucky Atkins said. "We won five straight games with those guys out, but we aren't playing as a team right now. We aren't moving the ball at all."

Detroit has 22 assists over the last two games, compared to 48 for its opponents.

Wednesday marked the second straight game in which the Pistons were held to a season low in points. They scored 76 at Charlotte a day earlier, and have been held under 90 in four of their last five contests.

"When we are missing that many guys, doing the small things becomes paramount," coach John Kuester said. "We're trying to keep things as simple as possible, but it isn't working."

Kuester's team has lost nine of 10 on the road, getting held below 100 points in each game.

Regardless of injuries, the Pistons can usually count on their perimeter defense, but even that part of their game has been poor. Detroit is holding teams to 33.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc, but the Raptors and Bobcats combined to make 51.5 percent (17 for 33).

Toronto is shooting 35.8 percent from 3-point range on the season. Hedo Turkoglu has been the Raptors' top shooter from long range, making 40.6 percent, and he's 11 for 21 over his last six games.

The 6-foot-10 forward is also averaging 8.3 assists over his last three contests.

"If I've got the ball in my hands, I'll make sure the guys get the best shots," Turkoglu said. "That's teamwork."

Raptors hold off Pistons, tally fourth straight win

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Raptors faced a decidedly different Pistons team than they did in the first game of their home and home series. Missing Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon and Richard Hamilton in Detroit four days ago, the Raptors handed them their sixth consecutive defeat and one of their worst losses in franchise history, holding them to 64 points.

However, in Toronto with Prince and Hamilton returning to the starting line up and Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva back off the bench for the Pistons, it still yielded the same result. The Raptors brought that same defense that has now carried them on a 4 game win streak, defeating the Pistons 102-95. The Raptors now boast a perfect 12-0 record when keeping opponents to under 100 points.

Starting off the game with an impressive first half, the Raptors lead at the break 61-40, holding the Pistons to a paltry 33 percent from the field. However, the Pistons rallied back with a solid third quarter, outscoring the Raptors 28-14 fueled by rookie Jonas Jerebko's 10 points. Jerebko finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals before fouling out in the fourth.

"We became more aggressive on defense and it was a matter of us understanding what we wanted to get accomplished," says Pistons coach John Kuester. "With our pick and rolls and our coverages, our guys really did a good job working this out. It will take some time."

The game came down to the fourth quarter, and despite clocking in as the longest non-overtime game in Raptors history at 2 hours and 49 minutes, the Raptors held on for the win. Chris Bosh led his team with a standout performance, leading all scorers with 25 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks. In addition to the Raptors improvement on the defensive end of late, is their ability to keep their composure and close out games.

"You have to keep your composure in instances like that, Bosh says."We knew that we were not really playing our best on defense and that is what we were talking about. We were not talking about our shots or anything. We had open looks and we missed them. But when it comes down to it, we have to play better defense. We can't let out offence dictate our defense."

Despite the return of Prince, Gordon and Hamilton, the three combined for 14-43 from the field and 2-9 from behind the 3-point line. Amidst concerns of rust and chemistry and Prince's back injury that has kept him out of 26 of the Pistons 29 matches, Gordon didn't see it as much of an issue.

"I don't know I think we had chances tonight. With all the injuries and guys coming back today I still thought we had a chance to win the game in the second half. We just didn't convert on plays that we needed to."

Gordon and Hamilton lead the Pistons in scoring with 15 each, while Rodney Stuckey added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Bosh just feels that it's a matter of the Raptors doing what they are supposed to be doing.

"We have been playing teams that are struggling and we have been taking advantage of the opportunities that we have had. We just have to keep going and hopefully it will build us some confidence and get guys involved. Everybody will figure out their role and we will be able to play a lot better basketball."

"I think we are playing with a little bit more confidence now," says Raptors coach Jay Triano.

"We are getting more guys involved and we are starting to help each other understand our defensive roles better." Jarret Jack, Andrea Bargnani and Hedo Turkoglu rounded out the rest of the Raptors scoring with 17, 16 and 14 points respectively.

"As a result we get stops, which leads to run outs, which leads to confidence and then everything starts rolling."

Of late, the Raptors are overcoming their Achilles heel, and continue to prove as long as their defense is rolling, their wins will continue to roll in as well.
