Spurs-Bucks Preview

A two-game trip against Eastern Conference teams with poor records could help the San Antonio Spurs get back on the winning track.

It begins with Richard Jefferson returning to the Bradley Center on Saturday night when the Spurs try to complete a season sweep of the Milwaukee Bucks.

San Antonio (15-11) is 2-10 against teams that are .500 or better, but has won 13 straight against teams which currently own losing records since a 92-85 loss at Chicago on Oct. 29. The Spurs lost for the second time in eight games Wednesday with a 98-94 home defeat to Portland.

"I don't pay too much attention to that," guard Roger Mason said. "A lot of times it's not so much who we are playing but how we are handling our assessments and our assignments and doing the things we are supposed to do."

The Spurs will visit New York on Sunday after Jefferson makes his return to Milwaukee (12-15). Jefferson averaged a team-high 19.6 points in 2008-09 in his only season with Milwaukee with an injured Michael Redd limited to 33 games.

San Antonio acquired Jefferson from Milwaukee in the offseason for three players, with only Kurt Thomas remaining on the Bucks roster. Jefferson, though, is scoring 13.4 points per game for his lowest average since his 2001-02 rookie season with New Jersey.

Jefferson wasn't much of a factor with 11 points in a 112-98 home victory over Milwaukee on Nov. 23. Tim Duncan had 24 points and 12 rebounds as the Spurs led by as many as 21 points.

A 12-point effort in that loss marked the start of the decline for Milwaukee rookie Brandon Jennings, who averaged 25.3 points in the Bucks' 8-3 start prior to that contest. Milwaukee has since lost 12 of 16, with the point guard averaging 15.8 points on 34.6 percent shooting.

Jennings had the worst game of his career after getting into early foul trouble Wednesday in a 109-97 home loss to Washington. He went 3 of 9 from the field for a season-worst seven points and committed three turnovers in a season-low 16 minutes.

"He looked out of sorts from the very beginning and looked tentative and then got fouls," coach Scott Skiles said. "This hasn't happened to him very much where he's had to deal with foul trouble in a game."

Redd made his first start at home since Oct. 31 and scored a season-high 32 points.

While the Bucks are trying to figure out how to get Jennings going again, the Spurs are looking for answers to their uneven play. San Antonio had its streak of scoring at least 100 points in eight straight games end Wednesday as it trailed the entire fourth quarter.

"It was a real tough loss," coach Gregg Popovich said. "I thought that down the stretch in the fourth quarter we started to play with more aggressiveness and more urgency - which we didn't have in early parts of the game."

Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, who missed the first meeting with Milwaukee with a groin strain, is averaging 8.4 points over his last five games on 30.6 percent shooting.

Hot-shooting Spurs cruise to victory in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) -- There aren't many certainties in life, but the San Antonio Spurs definitely provided one on Saturday night:

When their bench shoots 75.9% from the field, it's as good as certain the Spurs will win.

San Antonio's reserves made 22 of 29 shots for 51 points as the Spurs coasted to an easy 112-97 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks at the Bradley Center.

Antonio McDyess went 7-for-8 to score 14 points, Manu Ginobili went 5-of-6 on the way to 13 points and Roger Mason went 4-for-5 for nine points as the Spurs led from the first basket of the game and improved to 16-11.

"That's ridiculous," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of the bench's shooting. "That's not going to happen very often, but it happened tonight and obviously it helped us keep the lead."

While the bench was shining, the starters were no slouches. Tim Duncan went 11-for-16 for a game-high 26 points, and Tony Parker posted 16 points and eight assists. The Spurs shot 59.7% as a whole and led by as many as 25 points.

"They caught us on a good night," Popovich said. "This is one of our better nights of the season -- no exaggeration."

The Bucks suffered their fourth straight home loss after starting the season with a 9-3 home record and fell to 12-16.

The San Antonio starters set the tone at both ends of the court as Milwaukee had trouble getting shots and even more trouble making them. The Bucks made just two of their first 15 shots (13.3%). The Spurs held a 26-12 lead after a 3-pointer by Ginobili before Hakim Warrick's tip cut it to 26-14 after one.

The San Antonio lead reached 20 on three occasions in the second period before 3-pointers by rookie Jodie Meeks and Ersan Ilyasova got the Bucks within 56-41 at the half.

Ilyasova hit another 3-pointer in a 6-0 run early in the third that pulled Milwaukee within 58-47, but four missed shots and a turnover allowed the Spurs to go on a 12-2 run that made it 74-53 with 4:22 left in the third.

Every time the Bucks seemed primed to make a run the Spurs scored a rally-killing basket.

"Wow, that's incredible," Mason said of the San Antonio bench's shooting numbers. "But we have that potential on some nights."

The Spurs had 31 assists on 46 field goals, one short of their season-high of 32 set against Washington Nov. 21.

"It's fun to play basketball that way," Mason said. "We've got guys that are unselfish but very capable, and a lot of the guys on the bench have been starters. So we have that mentality when we come out there to try to extend the lead."

While the Spurs flirted with 60% shooting, the Bucks were at 38.7% (24 for 62) through three quarters and trailed, 89-64, before finishing at 42.7% (35 for 82).

"We were a little bit slow of foot out there, especially on the defensive end," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "Parker was breaking us down and getting in the paint and creating for other people.

"We got off to a poor start defensively, and then we had a lot of balls around the basket -- layups and things -- that went in and out and you could see that took the wind out of our sails."

The Milwaukee bench actually outscored the Spurs' bench, 58-51. Warrick had 23, rookie Jodie Meeks added 15 and Luke Ridnour 13. But Milwaukee starters were just 5 for 22 (22.7%) in the first quarter and finished the night 15 for 43 (34.8%).

Making the night even more difficult for the Bucks was the fact that big men Duncan and McDyess were killing them from the outside. Five of Duncan's 11 field goals were from 16 feet or farther, and five of McDyess' seven hoops were from 17 feet or more.

"'Dice' shot it real well, and he's been struggling with his shot a little bit," Duncan said of McDyess. "We moved the ball a lot better and got him some better looks than usual. Historically that's what he does. He's a shooter from that range and that's going to be good for us."

As for his own outside marksmanship, Duncan could only say, "It's good when they go in."

They were going in for all the Spurs on Saturday.

"They've got a great team," said Milwaukee's Kurt Thomas, who played for the Spurs last season and part of the year before. "There are a lot of new faces there, but it's definitely hard when the bench comes out and shoots the ball that well."
