Rockets-Nets Preview

Despite injuries to two of their best players, the Houston Rockets have lost consecutive games only once in 2009-10. With their next game coming against the woeful New Jersey Nets, that's unlikely to change this weekend.

The Rockets look to rebound from their first loss in a week and continue their recent dominance of the Nets, who enter Saturday night's home game hoping to avoid a ninth straight loss.

Though Yao Ming is out for the season and Tracy McGrady is slowly making his way back from microfracture knee surgery, Houston (17-12) has remained competitive, suffering its only back-to-back defeats Nov. 25 and 27 against Dallas and San Antonio, respectively.

The Rockets had won three straight entering Wednesday night, but shot 39.0 percent from the field in a 102-87 loss at Orlando. However, they appear to have a good chance to avoid consecutive defeats Saturday, given their recent history against the Nets and New Jersey's miserable start to the season.

The Nets (2-27) are the first team to lose 27 of their first 29 games since New Orleans in 2004-05. In a matchup between teams with the worst records in the league, New Jersey fell 103-99 at home against Minnesota on Wednesday night for its eighth loss in a row.

The Nets have dropped nine of 10 against the Rockets, including six straight and two last season by an average of 24.5 points. New Jersey has lost its last six home games against Houston.

Devin Harris led the Nets on Wednesday with 23 points and eight assists, but he's averaged 10.0 points and 2.7 assists while shooting 28.1 percent in three games against the Rockets since being traded to New Jersey in February 2008.

The Nets did get some encouraging news with the return of Yi Jianlian to the lineup Wednesday. Playing for the first time since injuring his right knee Nov. 2, the 7-foot forward had 22 points and eight rebounds while going 7 for 12 from the field and 4 for 6 from 3-point range against the Wolves.

"Yi was spectacular," guard Keyon Dooling told the Nets' official Web site. "He's going to be able to come into his own. He's had some hardships. With high expectations, sometimes it takes that. It takes the young players, two, three, sometimes four years to get that, find their game. And I think he's on the right path."

McGrady's recent return to the Rockets' lineup hasn't been as impressive. He's averaged 3.2 points and 7.8 minutes in six games while working back into game shape.

"I just try to play my role with the little cameos that I make. It is what it is," said McGrady, a seven-time All-Star. "Obviously (the coaches) are looking out for my best interest. They are trying to monitor my minutes. At the same time, I feel like it is time to really increase them and I think that is what is going to happen over the next couple of games."

Undersized Rockets hand Nets another tough defeat

EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Nets talked of the little things they were missing in a disappointing 98-93 loss to the Rockets on Saturday night at the Izod Center.

Unfortunately for New Jersey, they're all adding up to another big losing streak.

With a chance to get their first win against an above-.500 team, the Nets failed to get the late stop, shot and rebound against a Houston team in need of a good diversion. Before the game, the Rockets said star forward Tracy McGrady would be benched in their next two games and they granted his wish to be sent home on Saturday as they are at odds about his role on the team.

The Nets, however, had no such distraction. They have now lost nine straight and fall to 2-28.

"They all hurt," said Nets guard Devin Harris, who finished with 19 points and six assists. "But I think these close ones, you try and learn a lesson from.

"I mean, we're just a few shots away. We're just a few mistakes away from overturning this thing."

Fourth-quarter leads have been rare enough for New Jersey this season, but there it was -- a Harris jumper giving the Nets a 79-77 edge with 7:50 left.

From there, it was a virtual tug-of-war. Houston regained an 86-81 lead with Carl Landry scoring six of his 26 in a 9-2 run.

A Trevor Ariza 17-footer with 3:22 left -- his first basket after eight misses in the second half -- kept the Rockets' lead at 88-85.

But the Nets refused to fade. Yi Jianlian, showing an aggressive side all game, dunked one in to make it 90-88. But Yi was called for a foul for hanging on the rim; he also appeared to slap at the backboard. Landry converted the free throw to make it a three-point game.

"I still don't know why [the referee] called it," said Yi, who finished with 17 points.

A Keyon Dooling 3-pointer with 1:38 left tied the game at 91-91. Houston kept the ball for a crucial 24 seconds as Landry grabbed an offensive rebound off Aaron Brooks' miss.

Yi failed to convert a 3-point attempt with one minute left and Brooks grabbed another key rebound and put the Rockets up 93-91 on a layup with 37.3 seconds left. After another miss from beyond the arc, this time from Dooling, Brooks scored two from the free-throw line to give Houston a 95-93 lead with 21.2 seconds left.

After a Harris layup made it a two-point game, Brooks hit another two from the line to make it 97-93 with 12.9 seconds remaining.

The Nets were outrebounded 51-39 against the smaller Rockets. One glaring stat: Houston recorded 16 offensive rebounds to six for the Nets.

"This whole team is undersized," Landry said. "It is not about the height or the size. It's about the heart, courage and toughness."

The Rockets will travel to Cleveland for Sunday's game against the Cavs.

After attending shootaround Saturday morning, McGrady asked for -- and was granted permission -- to return home. The partial reason was the birthday of his son Laymen, who turns four on Monday. But the main thrust of McGrady's departure was a stalemate between he and Rockets coach Rick Adelman over the amount of playing the former All-Star should be getting at this stage of his return from microfracture knee surgery.

McGrady has been kept to 7-8 minutes per game in Houston's last six games. He asked Adelman to increase his time, but the coach was not ready to commit, as of yet.

"I'm a player, man," McGrady told the Houston Chronicle. "I don't make these decisions. I just abide by whatever they bring me."

Before the game, Adelman told reporters that he didn't fault McGrady for his unhappiness, but he stood by his decision.

"I just thought he was unhappy with that situation and I was uncomfortable trying to go forward and jump-start it again.

"I don't blame any player for saying I want more, and that's basically what he wants. And right now I'm not sure how to do that."
