Clippers-Suns Preview

The Phoenix Suns have slowed down significantly in December. Leandro Barbosa could help get them back up to speed.

The former Sixth Man of the Year is expected to see his first action since November, with the Suns trying to avoid a season-high third straight loss as they meet the Los Angeles Clippers on Christmas night.

A win over Toronto on Nov. 29 left Phoenix with a league-best 14-3 record, but Barbosa sprained his left ankle in that game. He hasn't played since, and the Suns have gone 4-8.

"I think what I have which is good for the team is the speed," said Barbosa, considered to be among the NBA's fastest players. "Sometimes I think that the team gets a little bit tired and I think that's when I come in and give them a little bit of speed, and right now, I'm not there, so there's nothing I can do."

Without Barbosa coming off the bench, the Suns are scoring 103.4 points per game in December, nearly nine below their average entering the month. They're shooting 29.0 percent from beyond the arc over the last three games without the career 40.4-percent 3-point shooter, among 17 players to make 460 3s since the start of his 2006-07 Sixth Man of the Year season.

Phoenix's bench was limited to 12 points in a 117-113 loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday, two nights after being outscored 36-15 by Cleveland's reserves in a 109-91 defeat. Both losses came at home after the Suns opened 10-0 at US Airways Center.

Another problem this month has been rebounding. They were outrebounded for the 10th time in 12 games Wednesday, including 16-8 on the offensive glass.

"We've got to find a better way to keep them off the offensive boards," said Amare Stoudemire, who had a season-high 35 points and 14 rebounds. "I think teams are now saying, 'OK, we can crash the offensive boards against the Suns,' and we've got to change that mentality and do a better job of that."

The Suns have won five straight and eight of nine versus the Clippers, who have lost four in a row at Phoenix - 140-100 on Feb. 17 in their last visit.

Barbosa led the Suns with 24 points in that game and had 17 in the only 2009-10 meeting, including a key 3-pointer late in a 109-107 victory Oct. 28. Steve Nash scored 15 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and hit the decisive layup with 5.5 seconds left.

Nash had 24 points and 12 assists Wednesday for his fifth straight double-double.

Counterpart Baron Davis has two in five games on the Clippers' current road trip and they won both, but they lost the other three. That includes both games this week, as he shot a combined 9 of 24 from the field in losses at San Antonio and Houston.

Los Angeles has been playing poorly on defense, forcing an average of 8.7 turnovers in the last three games while allowing more than 100 points in each. Only two of its previous 12 opponents topped 100.

Chris Kaman had a career-high 29 points Tuesday in a 108-99 loss to the Rockets, but cared little about his big night offensively.

"It doesn't matter at all," Kaman said. "It's very frustrating to lose."

This is the last of six consecutive road games for Los Angeles, which heads home to face Eastern Conference-leading Boston on Sunday.

Barbosa returns to spark Suns rout of Clippers

PHOENIX (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Brazilian Blur is back.

And so are the Suns' winning ways.

Leandro Barbosa, maybe the most reliable scorer off the bench in the NBA the past five years or so, returned from an ankle injury after a 12-game absence in the Suns' 124-93 rout Christmas night over the visiting Clippers.

Barbosa's return was the game's most notable feature.

But that's not what fans will remember most, at those fans who didn't leave their seats in the seconds before the halftime buzzer.

Grant Hill, standing just inside the defensive 3-point line, threw up a 62-footer from his chest with .3 seconds left in the half.

The shot headed straight toward the Suns basket, hit the backboard behind the hoop and banked in.

"Never a doubt," joked Hill, who cracked that the shot ranked in his all-time "top 20" for distance.

Of more importance, though was Barbosa, who had 12 points, four assists and just one turnover in 21 minutes.

Though his ankle is still "a little sore," Barbosa said, "I'm happy to be back. I'm happy coach (Alvin) Gentry trusted me to leave me out there."

The Suns (19-11) were 4-8 in Barbosa's absence. They are 13-2 in games in which he's played. Altogether, counting three games he missed early with a hand injury, they are 6-9 without him.

"We have to establish the rotation that we had," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said.

"We were playing great when we had him in the rotation. Everybody had a defined role."

When Barbosa went down at the end of November, "We started asking guys to do a little more than they really should."

His return "should really help us."

It sure did Friday night.

The Suns' bench has been inconsistent without him.

On the plus side, guard Goran Dragic has flourished, leaving the Suns to hope they've finally solved their age-old question mark at the backup point guard spot, as Barbosa more often plays the off guard.

But otherwise, the reserves haven't had nearly has much punch.

On Friday, with Barbosa on the floor most of the time, fellow reserve Jared Dudley poured in 12 points in the second quarter. He finished with 18 points.

"He puts a lot of pressure on people," Dudley said of Barbosa. With Barbosa on board, "Defenses can't focus on one person."

Steve Nash (14 points, eight assists) said, "He's an important player for us.

"We don't have a lot of guys who are penetrators. He can break down a defense."

With Barbosa back, the Suns' second unit goes from "decent to pretty good," Nash said.

Amar'e Stoudemire led the Suns with 26 points.

With everyone healthy, the Suns now have a 9-man rotation, four in the backcourt and five up front.

This will push Robin Lopez, the team's No. 1 draft pick in 2008, even farther out of the loop.

Lopez got some playing time after he made his season debut on Nov. 27; he'd missed the first 15 games with a foot injury.

But Louis Amundson, an energetic veteran reserve, has re-established himself as a "big" reserve ahead of Lopez. Amundson had 10 rebounds in 21 minutes vs. the Clippers.

"We're a screen and roll team," Gentry said. "We need to space the floor.

"It's tough to have Lou and Robin on the floor at the same time...that makes it tough."

About the only good news for the Clippers is that prized rookie Blake Griffin passed a hurdle in his comeback from a serious knee injury suffered during the preseason.

Griffin has been allowed to put more weight on the knee; the team hopes to have him back before the All Star break.

Until then, said coach Mike Dunleavy, "It's virtually impossible" to compensate for his loss.

He noted the Clippers were 6-1 in preseason at the time of the injury.

"He created easy shots, got us extra possessions, just with his work ethic and athleticism," said Dunleavy.

"It's impossible to duplicate the things he does. But other guys are getting opportunities, and they'll continue to get those opportunities until he gets back."

An early burst by Chris Kaman (19 points, 10 rebounds) led to an early 18-10 Clippers' lead.

Then Gentry called time out, reminded his players of their two straight losses at home and the poor rebounding that characterized those games.

The Suns' superior firepower took over from there.
