Jazz-Heat Preview

Dwyane Wade carried the Miami Heat to a triple-overtime victory over the Utah Jazz last season.

Going into the teams' first meeting of 2009-10, injuries seem to be making it more difficult for Wade to be as effective as he was in that contest.

The Heat look to win their seventh straight at home over the Jazz when they close a six-game stretch at AmericanAirlines Arena on Wednesday night.

Since drafting Wade in 2003, Miami (13-12) has yet to lose at home to Utah. Other than a 38-point win in 2006, however, the Heat's margins of victory in those games were small, with the other five contests being decided by an average of fewer than six points.

Wade has averaged 33.0 points in five home games against Utah. He turned in a spectacular performance against the Jazz in a 140-129 triple-overtime home win March 14, scoring 50 points to go along with 10 rebounds, nine assists, four steals and two blocks.

Wade, though, has struggled with his shooting of late, possibly due in part to a back problem that had him getting heat treatment before a 102-95 loss to Portland on Sunday. The defeat dropped Miami to 2-3 on its homestand.

Wade, also bothered by a sore right wrist, finished with 28 points and 10 assists, but went 13 of 31 from the field and didn't have a rebound for the fourth time in his career. He was 0 for 5 during Portland's 18-2 run in the third quarter.

Wade shot below his season average of 43.2 percent in five of the last eight games.

Miami managed to shoot 49.4 percent while committing only seven turnovers Sunday.

"We had our opportunities," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They had their chances and they capitalized on them when it counted most. And it's a shame, too, because we played well enough offensively across the board, moving the ball, shot a good percentage ... for us to come up short, it's a little bit frustrating."

As Miami finishes up a disappointing homestand, Utah (16-12) is closing an equally inconsistent five-game road trip.

The Jazz split the first four contests and are coming off a 104-99 loss to Orlando on Monday. The Magic went on a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to take control as Utah faded in its fourth game in six days.

Deron Williams had 18 points and 12 assists, but shot 6 of 16. Paul Millsap led the Jazz with 20 points.

"We got lost defensively," coach Jerry Sloan said. "That's tough to win."

Sloan's team is 5-8 on the road, averaging 96.5 points. The Jazz average 105.3 at home.

Wade, Heat grind out low-scoring win over Jazz

MIAMI (NBA.com exclusive) -- Dwyane Wade loves to see the Utah Jazz on the schedule. It's good for him and good for the Miami Heat.

Take Wednesday, for example. Wade scored a game-high 29 points to lead Miami to an 80-70 victory over the Jazz at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The last time these teams met (March 14), Wade scored 50 points to lead the Heat to a 140-129 triple-overtime victory.

Wednesday's victory didn't approach that one in offensive excitement -- the teams combined to shoot just .367 from the field -- but it was indicative of Miami's dominance over Utah. Miami improved to 14-12 overall as it recorded its 11th victory over the Jazz in their last 12 games, including seven consecutive victories at home.

"I can't explain it," Wade said.

Wade also can't explain his offensive issues. Wade, who is shooting a career-worst .432 from the field, has shot 50 percent or better just three times in 10 games this month.

And curiously, Wade, who at one time this season led the league in free throw attempts, hasn't attempted more than eight free throws in any of his last five games. Even more alarming is in one of those games he attempted just three free throws, and in two others he only attempted two free throws.

The Heat (14-12), who shot a season-low .360, extended its 32-30 halftime lead to 57-40 in the third quarter as Wade broke loose for 12 points. Utah, which shot .375, didn't get within single digits the rest of the night in what qualifies as one of the ugliest offensive showings in the NBA this season. The Jazz committed 21 turnovers.

"A lot of them were just careless," said Utah guard Deron Williams, who had six turnovers. "We were careless with the ball, not being in the right places on offense. They pressured us and we were trying to hide behind them."

On top of all the other bad offensive numbers this was the lowest-scoring game of the season for both teams.

"Both teams turned the ball over, both teams fouled," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "For a while there, neither team was making shots at a consistent rate."

Utah (16-13) was led by Williams (18 points), who had a resounding dunk over Heat center Joel Anthony in the fourth quarter. But that was about it for the offensive highlights. Well, unless you count forward Carlos Boozer (14 points). He scored Utah first 12 points of the game but only had two the rest of the way, going 1-for-9 from the field.

Give credit to Anthony, the third-year center from Nevada-Las Vegas for much of Boozer's issues. After Heat center Jermaine O'Neal left the game early with a strained right groin, and backup Udonis Haslem got into foul trouble, the athletic Anthony sprung into action and put on a good performance, finishing with eight points, nine rebounds (six offensive) and five blocks.

"Joel was able to come in and really make an impact defensively," Spoelstra said.

Utah could end the season among the rare NBA teams that have two 20-10 guys. Entering Wednesday's game, Williams was averaging 19.6 points and 10.1 assists per game while Boozer is averaging 19.6 points and 10.7 rebounds.

But the Jazz remain uneven and unbalanced. The Jazz are now 5-6 in their last 11 games with quality home victories (San Antonio, Orlando, and the Los Angeles Lakers), and road losses to high-quality teams (Atlanta, Orlando and the Lakers). There are also two losses against Minnesota, at home and on the road, and Wednesday's road loss at Miami.

"This team is a better basketball team than we've shown," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "When we get on the road it's a chore for us to play. We have young guys. They need to learn how to be tough and play. We just really need to learn how to play on the road."

Notes: Utah finished its season-long five-game road trip with a 2-3 record...Among Miami's next 31 games, 22 are on the road, beginning with the Christmas Day contest at New York.
