Trail Blazers-Spurs Preview

The San Antonio Spurs appear to be turning the corner after winning six of their last seven, but it's tough to find an impressive victory in the bench.

Beating the defensive-minded Portland Trail Blazers, even with their rash of injuries, would certainly count.

The Spurs look for a rare win over an above-.500 team Wednesday night when they host the Trail Blazers, who will be down another big body as they try to end a grueling four-game road trip with a third straight victory.

Many wondered what was wrong with San Antonio (15-10) after coach Gregg Popovich's team struggled to a 10-9 start, but some of those concerns have been alleviated after it's outscored its opponents by an average of 10.4 points in going 6-1 over the past two weeks.

Those six wins, however, have come against teams that are a combined 36 games below .500, including two against the Los Angeles Clippers. Six Spurs reached double figures in a 115-90 rout in Los Angeles on Dec. 13 and seven scored 10 or more in a 103-87 win Monday, led by Tony Parker's 19.

Parker had been held to 13.3 points on 41.8 percent shooting in his previous six games.

"He looked fresher and more aggressive," Popovich said. "For us, Tony has to be at the top of his game. It's always been that way and always will be."

Parker didn't get much of a chance to help San Antonio when it visited Portland on Nov. 6. The 2007 Finals MVP left with a sprained ankle that kept him out for four of the Spurs' next five games, and the Trail Blazers won 96-84 - their third straight and fourth in five games over San Antonio - behind 24 points from Brandon Roy.

The Blazers (18-12) haven't been the only contender against whom the Spurs have struggled. San Antonio is 2-8 when facing teams above .500, including four straight losses.

Both teams will be without their starting center from the first meeting. Matt Bonner, San Antonio's best 3-point threat, is expected to miss a month with a broken finger on his shooting hand, while Portland's Greg Oden's promising season is over due to his fractured left patella.

Portland has maintained its position as the West's best defensive team without Oden (allowing 92.3 points per game), but suffered another blow in an otherwise encouraging 85-81 win Tuesday at Dallas, its third in four games over an above-.500 opponent. Joel Przybilla, one of the NBA's leading rebounders per 48 minutes, ruptured his right patella tendon in the first quarter.

"I couldn't believe that somebody else got hurt," said LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Roy, who had a team-high 23 points - his 11th straight game with at least that many - and is averaging 26.5 in December, hurt his shoulder late in the fourth quarter but said he should be able to play Wednesday.

"We keep losing guys and it's nerve-racking just to take the floor,'' said coach Nate McMillan, who's on crutches while recovering from a ruptured right Achilles' tendon. "This was a great win for our group under the conditions.''

Sixteen-year veteran Juwan Howard will start Wednesday for the Blazers, who are left without a true center on the roster. Already missing Oden, Travis Outlaw, Nicolas Batum, Patrick Mills and Rudy Fernandez, Portland was granted a hardship exemption last week, allowing it to sign a 16th player.

With no Oden or Przybilla, Tim Duncan should have plenty of good looks at the basket. The two-time MVP has averaged 10.7 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 35.1 percent during the Spurs' three-game slide against Portland.

Bayless' 31 leads Blazers to win over Spurs

SAN ANTONIO (NBA.com exclusive) -- If there was ever a time when it looked like the Spurs would snap out of a recent embarrassing trend and get a victory against a team with a plus.500 record, Wednesday night would be the time.

Portland came in with a winning record, but the Trail Blazers are a team with injuries to seven players. And it got worse as the team pulled in to San Antonio, playing the previous night in Dallas and watching Joel Przybilla incur a possible season-ending knee injury and Brandon Roy come out of the game late with a sprained shoulder.

Przybilla and Roy did not play Wednesday, but the Spurs still couldn't come close to matching the energy of the players Portland did put on the floor. Behind a 31-point, seven-assist night from Jerryd Bayless and a second-straight double-double from Juwan Howard, the Trail Blazers controlled most of the game and defeated the Spurs 98-94 at AT&T Center.

"There's no words," gushed Blazers coach Nate McMillan. "This is the best road trip that I've been on."

McMillan later clarified that he meant the best road trip in his career. They finished it 3-1, with their lonely loss coming in the first game at defending Eastern Conference champ Orlando. The Blazers (19-12) followed by stringing together wins over Miami, then Dallas the night before beating San Antonio -- all teams with winning records.

The Spurs, by comparison, have little to hang their hat on. San Antonio (15-11) came into the game winning six of the last seven, but none against a winning team. The Spurs' last victory against a team with a winning record came Nov. 27 at Houston, but they are 0-5 against plus-.500 teams since.

"I don't pay too much attention to that," said Roger Mason Jr., who was one of four Spurs players in double figures with 16 points. "A lot of times it's not so much who we are playing but how we are handling our assignments and doing the things we're supposed to do.

"The majority of the game we didn't do that, and they outplayed us. Bayless had a heck of a game. It took us until the fourth quarter until we turned it (around), and we unfortunately lost the game."

The Blazers' aggressiveness showed up with 26 trips to the free-throw line (the Spurs had 17), 11 offensive rebounds (six for the Spurs) and 18 points off San Antonio's 14 turnovers.

Howard, who went almost consecutive years without a double-double, picked up a double-double on consecutive nights with 22 points and 12 rebounds starting in place of Przybilla (Howard had 10 and 10 in Dallas). LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 points, eight on 4-for-5 shooting in the final quarter.

Maybe the Spurs did play better in the fourth quarter. They did hit 11 of 20 shots and turned the ball over twice.

But they only outscored Portland 25-23. In other words, the Blazers answered everything the Spurs threw at them.

"We're playing the game the right way," McMillan said. "I firmly believe if you play the game hard, you play this game together, you will give yourself a chance to win in this league.

"You can have all the talent in the world, but if you're not playing the game the right way you won't win games."

Portland led by as many as 12 in the third quarter. The Spurs cut it to a one-point deficit with 9 ½ minutes left in the game on Tim Duncan's follow slam of a George Hill layup that was blocked by Jeff Pendergraph.

Duncan had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and his night included a 10-for-11 performance from the free-throw line. But nine of those free throws came in the second quarter as the Blazers found a way to keep him from getting easy shots most of the rest of the night.

But after his follow slam, Portland went on a 12-2 run. The Spurs had fits with Bayless, who had nine fourth-quarter points and consistently penetrated the lane.

"Coach (McMillan) told me not to try to do anything crazy, but to be aggressive and make plays," said Bayless, who scored 29 six nights ago in a win over Phoenix.

Bayless started the fourth-quarter run, after a Howard offensive rebound, by taking it right down the throat of the Spurs defense and had Tony Parker backpedaling before Parker committed the foul. Bayless went to the line and made both shots (he was 9 for 10 on the night).

He took a charge on an offensive foul, drove the lane again circled through it before dishing to Howard for a basket, and then was confident enough to drive the lane again and try a shot over Duncan, but it missed.

But he hit a three over Parker as the shot-clock buzzer sounded to give the Blazers a 96-87 lead with two minutes to go.

Duncan brought it back to a 96-94 game with 27 seconds to go on a pass inside from Mason.

Bayless pulled up from 20 feet on the next trip down the floor and missed. But the rebound got away from the Spurs and Andre Miller gathered it in near the foul line. He was fouled with .8 seconds to go.
