Pacers-Celtics Preview

After a shocking upset of the Boston Celtics last month, the Indiana Pacers were unable to parlay the victory into any sort of momentum, instead sinking to the bottom of the Central Division.

The Celtics, meanwhile, appear to have used the loss as somewhat of a wakeup call.

Boston will try to continue a dominant stretch of play and send the Pacers to a fourth straight defeat as the teams meet Tuesday night at the TD Garden.

Indiana scored more points than any other Celtics opponent this season in a 113-104 win Nov. 14 - Boston's only loss in 13 road games.

The Pacers (9-17) are just 5-14 since, and they've dropped nine of their last 10 on the road. The Celtics (21-5) have followed the defeat by winning 12 of 13 and surging back to the top of the Eastern Conference.

They had cause to refocus again after a 98-97 home loss to Philadelphia on Friday that snapped an 11-game winning streak, but bounced back two days later with a 122-104 trouncing of Minnesota.

"We were ticked (off) and we were mad," forward Kevin Garnett said Sunday. "It definitely is fuel for the next practice, if not the next game. You can't win them all, but you can apply those things to the game, and I thought we came out focused."

Paul Pierce matched a club record for most 3-pointers without a miss against the Timberwolves, making all six of his shots from beyond the arc as part of a 29-point night. He was one of seven Boston players to score in double figures, continuing a trend of balance for the veteran team.

No Celtic is averaging more than Pierce's 18.1 points, but six are scoring at least 9.4 per game to maximize the efficiency of an offense that leads the league in field goal percentage (49.4).

Boston also allows an NBA-low 91.9 points per game, and Pierce may be especially motivated defensively after struggling to contain Indiana's Dahntay Jones last month. Jones scored a season-high 25 points, and Pierce took the blame.

"Dahntay Jones went out and had one of his best nights, and I'm really going to take that one on the chin right there," Pierce said.

Jones has struggled lately, averaging 6.6 points in his last five games. Indiana is also missing leading scorer Danny Granger, who had a game-high 29 points against the Celtics last month, due to a foot injury.

Those issues have taken a toll. The Pacers shot a season-worst 35.6 percent from the field in an 84-81 home loss to Milwaukee on Monday night, their third straight defeat. Mike Dunleavy tried to carry the offensive load for Indiana but shot 2 of 17 and finished with a season-low four points.

"We lost this one, but we can't dwell on it," Pacers forward Troy Murphy said. "This game must be put behind us and we must move on to the next one."

Dunleavy and Granger both missed the Pacers' last visit to Boston, a 104-99 loss Feb. 27. Indiana has dropped seven of its last eight road matchups with the Celtics.

Garnett-less Celtics rally in second half to beat Pacers

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Boston Celtics managed to do pretty well without Kevin Garnett last season, lasting until a Game 7 with NBA Finals-bound Orlando. But when Garnett became a surprise scratch just before tipoff Tuesday against the Indiana Pacers, the Celtics had never appeared to miss him more.

Much of which, surely, had to do with Garnett's absence, and the insertion of Rasheed Wallace into the starting lineup, not being announced until just before the team took the court.

"We were wondering why Kevin wasn't putting his uniform on," Paul Pierce said.

Sans KG, Boston's defense was a shadow of itself for the first two quarters as Indiana took a 15-point lead at the half, but thanks to a flood of energy from Kendrick Perkins and a strong fourth quarter from Paul Pierce, the Celtics managed to pull out a 103-94 victory at TD Garden.

"You're talking about a guy who we play our offense through, our leader on defense," Pierce said of Garnett. "It took us a half to realize that Kevin wasn't going to be out there."

The Pacers burst of the gate to take a 13-point lead with 2:41 left in the first, assisting on seven of their first eight baskets while the Celtics were routinely out of defensive position. Some damage control from Rasheed Wallace closed the deficit to seven by the end of the quarter, though it proved a fruitless effort as Indiana re-extended the lead with little resistance.

When a team scores 57 points in a half on the Celtics, most guesses would be that the opponent shot somewhere north of 50 percent. But Indiana merely hit at 46 percent, getting most of their points beyond the arc where they shot 7-for-15.

"Basically all I told them at halftime was that our defense was awful and our effort was awful," Doc Rivers said.

Taking care of effort first, Perkins sent a current of electricity through Boston's defense in the third, sparking its 35-point quarter, while chipping in 13 points of his own as part of a 19-point, eight-rebound performance that the Celtics likely would have lost, and been lost, without.

Boston's resurrection began in earnest midway through the third, when Roy Hibbert fumbled the ball near the arc as the shot clock winded down. Rajon Rondo came up with possession and fired a bullet to Ray Allen for a three in transition, shrinking the lead to four. Minutes later, Allen hit from the exact same spot to give Boston its first lead of the game, 67-66.

"They gave it to us and we weren't able to respond," Troy Murphy said.

Yet even with all momentum shifting in Boston's favor, Indiana, short their own All-Star in Danny Granger, didn't fold. Creating matchup problems left and right, Murphy poured in 24 points (nine in the fourth) and snagged 18 boards to maintain suspense, but the Pacers lacked a closer to match Pierce's 14 fourth-quarter points.

Through three quarters, Pierce was 0-for-8 from the field with just seven points off free throws -- at that point just the 27th player to do so in at least 30 minutes since 1986-87 -- before unleashing a flurry of buckets that sealed the game.

"I felt like the shots I was getting were good shots," Pierce said. "I thought something was wrong with the rim."
