Pacers-Grizzlies Preview

Troy Murphy is settling into his role as the Indiana Pacers' new top scorer. He's had little luck, though, trying to get into a groove against the Memphis Grizzlies in recent years.

Following perhaps his best performance of the season, Murphy looks to end his struggles against the Grizzlies on Friday night.

The loss of All-Star swingman Danny Granger to a foot injury hasn't stopped Indiana (9-14) from bouncing back from a six-game losing streak. The Pacers were defeated in their first game after losing Granger but are 3-1 since.

Granger, averaging 24.4 points, is expected to miss at least four weeks.

Murphy has taken over as the go-to scorer, averaging 22.7 points while shooting 47.4 percent (9 for 19) from 3-point range and 59.1 percent (26 for 44) overall over his last three games. The veteran big man had 26 points, going 5 of 7 from beyond the arc, and added 15 rebounds in a 101-98 win over Charlotte on Wednesday night.

"Murph is a heck of a player, he's a weapon," Indiana forward Mike Dunleavy said. "He can space the floor and make shots. He's been playing really well lately."

Murphy missed six games in November due to a back injury and the Pacers performed just fine without him, going 5-1. Now Indiana would likely be much worse off without his scoring.

"I've been watching a lot of film with the coaches and trying to find different places where I can get shots," Murphy said.

Matchups with Memphis (10-15), though, have given him problems. Murphy is averaging 7.8 points and shooting 31.8 percent in his last five games against the Grizzlies.

But Memphis has struggled defensively this season, allowing an average of 104.8 points. The Grizzlies lost 110-97 to Atlanta on Wednesday night.

"Defense is not something that kids come out of college wanting to do," forward Rudy Gay told the Grizzlies' official Web site. "There are a lot of people out there less athletic than other people, and they can lock people down. It's not how fast you are and how strong you are. It's position."

Gay was held to 11 points, leaving in the third quarter with a sprained right ankle. He didn't return, but said the injury isn't serious and he could have played if the game was closer.

Gay, averaging a team-high 20.9 points, anticipates facing the Pacers.

Gay and the Grizzlies' four other starters all scored in double figures Wednesday, but Zach Randolph - averaging 18.3 points - was limited to 10.

Randolph is averaging 26.0 points while going 11 of 22 from 3-point range in his last nine games versus the Pacers. The veteran big man, though, has stayed away from the perimeter for the most part this season, attempting seven shots from beyond the arc.

With Gay hurt and Randolph struggling, Memphis lost for the third time in four games after winning its previous three, a stretch that included victories over Cleveland and Dallas.

The Grizzlies and Pacers each won at home in last season's series.

Grizzlies tackle Pacers, 107-94

MEMPHIS, Tenn.(NBA.com Exclusive) -- It could have been the result of the Memphis Grizzlies' crisp perimeter passing. Or maybe it was his reputation, fair or not, as an inconsistent outside shooter. But whatever the reason, Mike Conley found himself wide open at the top of the arc.

"I had no doubt when I shot the ball," said Conley, the Grizzlies' point guard. "I had confidence that it was going in."

Conley's 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter sealed the Grizzlies' 107-94 victory over the Indiana Pacers before 13,217 at FedExForum.

Memphis center Marc Gasol, waiting to check into the game, slapped the scorer's table in celebration as the Grizzlies (11-15) snapped a two-game losing streak and overcame some first-half sloppiness. The game also represented the latest step in Conley's maturation as a third-year pro.

Against the Pacers (9-15), Conley finished with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, eight assists and five rebounds. And after a slow start to the season, during which he was criticized by fans and the media, Conley has been hot in December. Over his last five games, he has averaged 13.8 points on 60.4-percent shooting and 5.8 assists. He also has committed just seven turnovers.

"He's been playing like he was playing at the end of last season," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "There are a lot of expectations of each and every player. It doesn't always happen when you think it should happen. Some players start fast and some players start slower. I'd rather have one start a little slower and get stronger as the season wears on rather than one that starts fast and fades."

All five starters scored at least 17 points for the Grizzlies. Memphis was led by Zach Randolph, who finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds, both game highs. Gasol had 17 points and 14 rebounds, and O.J. Mayo scored 20 points to go with six assists.

"We have to win these games," said Gasol, who has been part of one of the more surprising teams through the first quarter of the season.

T.J. Ford and Mike Dunleavy scored 16 points apiece for the Pacers, who had won three of their last four after losing 10 of 11.

It was a big night for Poplar Bluff, Mo. More than 1,500 folks from Tyler Hansbrough's hometown made the 150-mile trip to Memphis to cheer their favorite son, now a rookie forward with the Pacers. The marching band from Poplar Bluff High School, decked out in Pacers-colored T-shirts that spelled "T-Y," even played the national anthem. Several of the Grizzlies -- Gay and Mayo, in particular -- seemed unamused by the festivities.

Memphis looked focused early and rolled to a 17-6 lead behind Conley, who sank his first four shots, including three 3-pointers.

Then the Grizzlies crumbled. Turnovers, poor shot selection and porous defense added up to a 56-51 halftime lead for the Pacers. Ford feasted on the Grizzlies' perimeter defenders, consistently finding lanes to the foul line for pull-up jumpers and 14 points.

Hollins revealed his distaste with the officials by drawing an early technical foul, and then with his team during a timeout late in the second quarter. He reminded his players at halftime that this was a game they needed to win.

"The league is becoming more balanced," Hollins said. "There are only four or five teams that are superior to everybody. The rest of the teams, they have to work hard to win. We're in that category along with a bunch of other teams."

The Grizzlies have proven they can be explosive. They might not have much depth -- their bench accounted for just seven points -- but they have a young, talented and unselfish starting lineup that can score points in bunches.

Memphis mounted a 28-5 run to start the second half that effectively put the game out of reach. Indiana was 2-of-15 from the field during the stretch.

"We really stepped it up defensively," Hollins said. "But we also stepped it up with our offensive execution. We went inside exclusively, and they had no answer for what we were doing. It was hard to double-team and it was hard to front."

Hansbrough had a strong second half, scoring all 14 of his points, which elicited cheers from the Poplar Bluff contingent. But the Grizzlies got tired of him and his caravan. Late in the third quarter, with the Pacers trying to keep the deficit within single digits, Randolph blocked back-to-back layup attempts by Hansbrough. Then, at the other end, Randolph drained a tear-drop 15-footer over Hansbrough's outstretched hand.

"Their bigs dominated our bigs," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. "They just dominated our people inside."

The lead was 95-82, and O'Brien called a timeout to quiet the storm. But it was too late. Conley buried his fourth 3-pointer on the next possession.

"I think we're coming together as a team," Conley said. "It's allowed me to be more vocal and aggressive and play my game a little bit more, knowing the guys trust me and I trust them. It's made my job a lot easier."
