Jazz-Nets Preview

Facing the New Jersey Nets might be the ideal way for the Utah Jazz to open a season-long, five-game road trip on a positive note.

The Jazz look to rebound from a frustrating home loss to one of the NBA's worst teams by visiting another in the lowly Nets on Wednesday night.

Trying for a third straight victory, Utah (14-10) looked sluggish and even overmatched at times in a 110-108 loss to Minnesota on Monday night. The Jazz have been responsible for two of the Timberwolves' four victories this season.

Though the Jazz shot 50.6 percent from the field, they were 21 of 37 from the free-throw line and outrebounded 48-36 to conclude a 2-1 homestand that was highlighted by a 102-94 win over the Los Angeles Lakers two nights earlier.

"Any time those kinds of things happen it doesn't matter what color the uniform is, you're going to get beat," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.

The Jazz have a chance to improve in both areas when they face the Nets (2-23), who have lost four in a row after winning two of three. While Utah is 3-6 on the road and trying to avoid a third straight loss away from home, New Jersey is 1-8 and averaging 88.3 points per game on its home floor.

With stops at Atlanta, Orlando and Miami, the trip gets more difficult after this contest for Utah, averaging 101.4 points overall, but 94.9 on the road. That makes taking advantage of a struggling opponent to open the swing even more important.

Another big game from point guard Deron Williams would help accomplish that.

Williams scored a season-high 38 points and added 13 assists against Minnesota. He's averaging 30.3 points and 13.0 assists in his last three games, and has posted three consecutive double-doubles against New Jersey.

Carlos Boozer, averaging 20.1 points and 11.1 boards on the season, missed both games last season against the Nets due to injury, but scored 41 in a 117-115 loss in his last trip to New Jersey on March 15, 2008.

Utah snapped a five-game road losing streak to the Nets with a 103-92 victory in the teams' most recent meeting Dec. 17.

New Jersey's Devin Harris had 22 points before he was ejected in the fourth quarter for a flagrant foul on Cleveland's Jamario Moon in Tuesday's 99-89 road loss to the Cavaliers.

Brook Lopez added 22 with 15 rebounds, but the Nets shot 39.0 percent on another frustrating night for a team that opened the season with an NBA-record 18 straight losses.

Lopez (19.6 ppg, 9.6 rpg) and Harris (17.3 ppg) have tried but been unable to carry the injury-plagued Nets, who will likely be without Chris Douglas-Roberts (16.2 ppg) for a third straight game with a sprained left knee.

"You don't see the benefits of it on the scoreboard,'' Lopez said. "We didn't close out (against Cleveland). We're getting there, as tough as it is to hear, game in and game out.''

Harris is averaging 20.5 points in his last four games and 24.7 with 9.7 assists in his last three against the Jazz.

Jazz seek answers on road, find Nets at home

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (NBA.com exclusive) -- It was a chance for the Nets to find themselves at home or for the Jazz to find themselves on the road.

And after Utah's easy 108-92 win on Wednesday night at the Izod Center, it was effortlessly determined that New Jersey was decidedly more lost in its search for self-discovery.

The Nets, behind 14 of 45 shooting through the second and third quarters, fell to 2-24, while the Jazz, sparked by Deron Williams' 20 points and 14 assists and Carlos Boozer's 26 points and 10 rebounds, got off to a strong start to their annual pre-Christmas road trip.

Playmaking was the difference for both sides. The Jazz had 31 assists -- compared to the Nets' 19 -- and scored 25 points on the break, compared to seven for New Jersey.

"Our lapses tonight were in transition," said Nets point guard Devin Harris, who was just 1-for-9 from the field for his nine points. "At the turnovers, we didn't get back.

"With a team like this, they attack you so well, they get the ball in the paint with all of their movement. They're a great passing team and you've got to have long stretches where you're in tune defensively and we tonight we just didn't bring that type of intensity as far as defensively."

Utah, now 15-10, had posted positive home wins against San Antonio, Orlando and the Lakers last week, only to lose to the struggling Timberwolves on Monday at home before embarking on this five-game road trip. In fact, Minnesota has chalked up two of its four wins against the Jazz this season, causing Boozer to wonder aloud "How come we can't get up for Minnesota, but we can get up for everybody else?"

"We learned our lesson," Boozer said. "This game was a good test for us to carry us on to the next one."

From here, Utah travels to Atlanta, Charlotte, Orlando and Miami before Christmas Day.

"We just didn't want to start this road trip off bad," Williams added.

The Nets almost had something to say about that. They started the game off strongly, making 10 of 15 shots in the first quarter. From there, however, they couldn't connect with consistency. New Jersey did cut it to 92-84 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Jazz free-styled a 12-2 run to put it away.

"We're not going to overcome unless we get better defensively," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "It's no secret -- they killed us with transition

"So what we take away from today is we've got to get better in the transition and clean up our defense a little bit. We've got to get better defensively, and that has nothing to do with how many guys we have out."

The Nets, as usual, were missing key players due to injury. Chris Douglas-Roberts, averaging 16.2 points, missed his third straight game with a sprained knee. Center Yi Jianlian who has missed most of the season with a sprained knee, continues to sit with a lip laceration -- although he is expected to resume practicing next week.

The Nets returned home after a rather schizophrenic three-game road trip, which started with some chatter of a divide in the locker room and ended with a players-only dinner thrown by Harris. New Jersey had lost all three games on the trip, but was most competitive in Tuesday night's 99-89 loss to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Still, 10 of the Nets' last 11 losses have been by double-digits.

Despite the difficulties of this year on the court, the Nets as an organization were looking toward the future on Wednesday. The team announced it completed its ownership agreement with Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov and his Onexim Sports and Entertainment Holdings company.

The deal, subject to approval by the NBA Board of Governors sometime early in 2010, gives Prokhorov 80 percent of the Nets and 45 percent of a new arena in Brooklyn to Onexim.

Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko played for Prokhorov's CSKA team in Russia from 1998-2001 and the two have maintained a friendship since. Kirilenko said Prokhorov will "turn around the team" because of his business savvy and competitive nature.

"He's ready to spend ... I don't think that's an issue," Kirilenko said of Prokhorov. "But I think he wants to make sure he's going to get a result. It's not just get everybody at a crazy price. I think he still is going to be really wondering what kind of piece he can get for the price he's ready to spend."
