Nets-Hawks Preview

Already with one of the best offenses in the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks are starting to play better on the defensive end. That doesn't bode well for the New Jersey Nets.

The high-powered Hawks look to get another solid defensive effort and win for the fourth straight time Sunday against the lowly Nets.

With Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford and Josh Smith leading the way, Atlanta (16-6) is averaging 104.7 points. The Hawks are among the league leaders in points in the paint (49.4 per game) and fast break points (17.8), and have been getting contributions from the entire team.

After all 12 players scored in Wednesday's 118-83 win over Chicago, the bench scored 55 points - one less than the starting five - in Friday's 111-89 victory at Toronto.

"When our bench comes out and plays like that, we're a tough team to beat," said Johnson, who averages a team-high 21.0 points. "It makes us a lot more deadly, you can't really sit up and guard just one or two guys when you've got everybody rolling the way we were."

Although the offense has keyed the strong start, Atlanta's defensive play is a big reason for this three-game winning streak.

The Hawks are limiting opponents to 82.3 points on 40.8 percent shooting in the three victories after allowing an average of 114.5 points on 54.4 percent shooting in their previous two games.

That defensive turnaround is not a good sign for a New Jersey team that has trouble scoring.

The Nets (2-21), who took three of four from the Hawks last season, are averaging league lows of 88.5 points and 41.1 percent shooting, topping the 100-point mark just twice. They will likely have a difficult time trying to keep up with an Atlanta team that is averaging 123.7 points in its last three at home.

Atlanta, 9-2 at Philips Arena, also probably won't have much trouble getting its offense in gear against New Jersey, which is allowing an average of 105.3 points in its last eight games.

The Nets are coming off Friday's 107-91 loss to Indiana, dropping to 2-3 under coach Kiki Vandeweghe. New Jersey shot 36.3 percent from the field and made 3 of 13 shots from 3-point range.

"This was a tough one," Vandeweghe said. "We have to take a look at it and realize how they got ahead of us. (Friday) was a struggle for us shooting-wise."

Poor shooting has been an ongoing problem for the Nets, who have made less than 40.0 percent of their attempts in 10 games.

Brook Lopez had a rare bad shooting night Friday, missing 15 of 23 shots, but still finished with 25 points. Lopez, the league's highest-scoring center at 19.5 points per game, was shooting 60.0 percent from the floor in his previous four contests.

Devin Harris left Friday's game in the second half with a sprained left pinky finger, but returned to finish with 18 points. Harris was instrumental to New Jersey's success against the Hawks last season, averaging 27.3 points in the four meetings.

Hawks blow by undermanned Nets 130-107

ATLANTA (NBA.com exclusive) -- Despite unrest in their locker room, the Atlanta Hawks played as if they were all on the same wave length Sunday in rolling past the Nets, 130-107.

Marvin Williams was sick and the starting forward did not play, but everyone who suited up for the home team scored, seven players found double figures on the score sheet, and coach Mike Woodson's team registered 32 assists on the way to Atlanta's fourth straight win.

Clearly, the fact that reserve center Randolph Morris stated in the post-game locker room that he would not eat at the restaurant that fellow reserve post man-entrepreneur Zaza Pachulia is about to open has not caused a rift of any kind.

Besides, Morris was joking.

Harmony is the word with the Hawks, who broke open a tight game with a 19-5 scoring bulge over the final five-plus minutes of the first half and never really had a reason to check their rear-view mirror after that. The Nets pulled briefly within eight points in the third quarter, but for less than a minute.

Atlanta swingman Maurice Evans, who started 25 games last season but has seen more sporadic playing time this season largely because of the offseason addition of guard Jamal Crawford, led the Hawks with a season-high 22 points and pitched in a season-high nine rebounds.

He hit all four of his 3-pointers (and has made 11 of 15 in the past three games), and Atlanta shot 11 for 17 from beyond the arc.

As players dressed afterward, there was more angst caused by people blocking the two big-screen TVs from view in the locker room than concern about who scored what. They wanted to catch up on the day's NFL action.

Woodson credited Evans' patience and professionalism. So did Josh Smith, who scored 16 points with eight rebounds in less than 26 minutes.

"I think Mo Evans did a good job picking up the slack for Marvin going out, and it shows the maturity of this team when somebody goes down, another player comes in the spot and steps up," Smith said.

Atlanta All-Star guard Joe Johnson scored 21 points, added a game-high 10 assists and pitched in four steals as the Hawks overwhelmed the visitors over the final quarter-and-a-half.

Devin Williams scored 23 points and led the Nets with nine assists, but he and center Brook Lopez (19 points, 12 rebounds) were not near enough to prevent the Nets (2-22) being overmatched.

Although New Jersey has gone 2-4 since Kike Vandeweghe took over as coach after the Nets got off to an NBA-worst 0-18 start, but has hardly been competitive in losing three straight by 16, 16 and 23 points.

Healthy bodies were in short supply as Chris Douglas-Roberts (MRI revealed a left knee sprain) and Tony Battie (groin) were new additions to an injured list that has for weeks included Eduardo Najera (back) and Yi Jianlan (lip laceration). None of them played, and Keyon Dooling (hip flexors) missed his second straight game.

"We recognized that we have a lot of injuries, which is not an excuse," Vandeweghe said. "The Hawks are one of the best teams in the East, and they're playing at a very high level."

The Hawks didn't miss much in making 49 of 92 shots (53.3 percent), and they frequently gathered their own mistakes with a 16-10 edge in offensive rebounds. That means that on 65 of their 92 shots (or 70.6 percent), they either scored or got another shot at it. Atlanta out-rebounded New Jersey 59-40.

With Williams and veteran reserve post man Joe Smith (dislocated thumb) out, Atlanta's Othello Hunter scored his first points of the season and grabbed four rebounds, and rarely used big men Morris (seven points, three rebounds) and Jason Collins (two points, one blocked shot) also saw earnest playing time.

All five Atlanta starters plus rookie guard Jeff Teague (12 points) and Crawford (13) each scored at least five times field goals.

"We're playing pretty good right now," Woodson said. "We're doing everything right defensively, and offensively we look like we're having fun, sharing the basketball, and doing all the necessary things to score the right way."
