Suns-Nuggets Preview

The Phoenix Suns delivered another solid offensive performance at home in their latest game, but they've looked out of sync so far in December on the road.

Denver hasn't been a place where they've struggled to score historically - but winning has been another matter.

The NBA's two-highest scoring teams meet for the first time this season Saturday night at the Pepsi Center, where Phoenix tries to reverse its recent woes away from home and avoid a fifth straight road loss to the Nuggets.

The Suns (16-7) played 15 of their first 22 games on the road, averaging 108.5 points while going 8-3 during their first 11 away from home.

Since the end of November, however, Phoenix's offense on the road has taken a turn for the worse. The Suns averaged 94.5 points in dropping their last four games in opposing venues, limping home hoping to get Steve Nash and their high-octane attack clicking once more.

Phoenix jumped out to a 61-52 halftime lead Friday against Orlando and held on, benefiting from Amare Stoudemire's 28 points and Nash's 18 assists to escape with a 106-103 victory.

"It's a win that we desperately needed, obviously, with the schedule that we have coming up,'' coach Alvin Gentry said. "It's very important for us to try to keep this thing going at home.''

The Suns play two of their next three on the road before finally returning to US Airways Center for a lengthy stretch, playing 10 of 12 there beginning Dec. 19.

A stop at the Pepsi Center doesn't look too inviting considering the recent history in the series. The home team has won the last nine games in the series - four in Denver - as they've combined for an average of 236.8 points with just 1.8 points per game separating the clubs.

Chauncey Billups had 26 points in Phoenix's most recent visit to Denver, leading the Nuggets (16-7) to a 119-113 win in overtime on Jan. 15 despite Carmelo Anthony missing due to injury.

Anthony, who's averaged just 20.5 points on 38.1 percent shooting in his last four games against the Suns, hasn't had any problems scoring lately, but it hasn't always led to a Denver victory.

Anthony scored 34 points in the Nuggets' 107-95 loss at Charlotte on Tuesday, then poured in 40 in a 101-99 loss in Detroit on Thursday. It was the fourth 40-plus point game of the season for Anthony, the NBA's leading scorer at 30.3 points per game.

"He's amazing when he gets into that offensive groove,'' coach George Karl said. "But we just didn't have enough guys going with him.''

Denver, though, is 9-0 when Anthony scores fewer than 30 points. It was 8-1 when Chauncey Billups had topped 20 prior to the loss to the Pistons, when the former NBA finals MVP had 21.

"We're not a great team,'' said Billups, who's shooting 34.4 percent in the Nuggets' seven losses. "We're a good team. We should be winning games like this, and the Charlotte game.''

Stoudemire has averaged 23.4 points on 67.8 percent shooting in his last five games in Denver, but the Suns' chances to pick up their first win in the Rocky Mountains since Feb. 5, 2007, may come down to what help the player who starts alongside Stoudemire up front can provide.

Phoenix is 9-1 when Channing Frye scores at least 12 points, yet Frye has scored 12 points total in the Suns' last three games.

Nuggets climb back from 17 down to knock off Suns

DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- Perhaps it was because NBA discipline czar Stu Jackson was on hand that Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry suddenly developed a case of amnesia.

Gentry was thrown out of his team's 105-99 loss to Denver with 2 seconds left Saturday night at the Pepsi Center for arguing what he apparently believed was a non-call on a missed layup by Steve Nash five seconds earlier. But afterward Gentry had nothing to say about that.

"I didn't see anything,'' said Gentry, whose team blew a 17-point second-half lead. "They didn't call a foul so obviously it wasn't a foul. I didn't see anything. I'm not giving them my money. So, no, I didn't see anything. It was a great call. No call. That's fine.''

Well, Gentry will fork over some money to the NBA for his two technicals, but it's doubtful Jackson, the NBA's executive vice president of basketball operations, will have to take further action. Not only did Gentry leave the court in a timely manner, Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony said Gentry's ejection happened so fast he didn't realize what was going on until Gentry already was walking to the locker room.

Anthony, who scored a game-high 32 points, hit both technical foul shots for a 103-99 lead. Then Anthony, who had been fouled just before Gentry's ejection, made two more free throws to account for the final score.

"We said, 'Let's go. Fight. Let's play hard. Keep fighting,''' Anthony said of his team wiping out the big second-half deficit to stop a two-game losing streak.

The Suns still had fight in them until Nash, with his team down 101-99, missed a layup with 7 seconds remaining. He was closely guarded by Nuggets center Nene, and Anthony gathered in the rebound. The Suns guard was asked if he got fouled.

"I don't know,'' said Nash, who led Phoenix with 28 points. "It's tough to say.''

The Nuggets, though, had plenty to say about it.

"I thought it was just a good defensive play by Nene,'' said Nuggets coach George Karl. "I didn't think it was a foul.''

And then there was this from Anthony:

"I should send a video tape in for every time I touch the ball,'' Anthony said.

Well, considering Jackson was at the game, Anthony might not need to do that. And, considering he shot 9-of-10 from the foul line, he didn't have too much to complain about.

The Nuggets had enough things to complain about at halftime, when they fell behind 60-45. It got even worse when Nash drove in for a layup to give Phoenix a 70-53 lead with 8:08 left in the third quarter.

But the Nuggets wasted little time in mounting a comeback. They outscored the Suns 24-7 the remainder of the quarter to tie the score 77-77.

The Nuggets can thank guard Chauncey Billups for the quick comeback. Billups, who scored 24 points, drilled three 3-pointers in the final eight minutes of the third quarter to make for what had been a sluggish start.

"I told myself I was going to come out and be extremely aggressive in the second half,'' Billups said of his desire to make up for a first half in which he scored seven points, had three turnovers and picked up three fouls.

The Nuggets knew that was the best way to win. After all, the Suns are not exactly known for their prowess on the second game of back-to-back situations, and they had played Orlando at home the night before.

The Suns entered the game 1-4 on the second game of a back-to-back, having been outscored by an average 19.5 points in the losses. They arrived in Denver at 4 a.m. Friday.

"It's tough coming in here [in that situation],'' said Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin, who returned after missing two games with a dislocated left pinkie and totaled 12 points and nine rebounds. "When teams come in like that, our record is pretty good.''

Gentry didn't want to make any excuses. Nash, though, didn't deny the Suns got a bit fatigued.

"I just feel like we were a little tired, a little stagnant,'' Nash said. "When we were up 17, we let them back into the game and down the stretch we didn't make the plays.''

The Suns didn't completely set. After the Nuggets had taken a 92-87 lead with 5:28 left, Phoenix came back to take a 95-94 lead with 3:25 left on a 3-pointer by Nash.

But Billups, who shot 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, soon made a pair of 3-pointers. His second one gave the Nuggets the lead for good at 100-97 with 2:19 left.

"They were huge,'' Martin said of Billups' key 3-pointers throughout the second half.

So was Nene's defensive stand in the waning seconds. If there was a foul, Gentry couldn't remember it.
