Timberwolves-Kings Preview

The Sacramento Kings have excelled at one end of the floor this season and struggled at the other. For the Minnesota Timberwolves, almost nothing on the court has gone right this season.

It's no surprise then that both teams enter their matchup in Sacramento on losing streaks and with subpar records.

The Kings will try to snap a four-game slide Saturday night with their fourth consecutive win over the Timberwolves, who have dropped three in a row.

With rookie guard Tyreke Evans and second-year forward Jason Thompson leading the way, Sacramento (9-12) has been one of the league's top scoring teams with 104.4 points per game. The Kings have topped 100 in 16 of the last 18 after averaging 91.7 points in three October contests.

Sacramento's problems have come with its backs to the basket, yielding 105.6 per game. After matching a season low by allowing 96 points at New Orleans on Tuesday night, Sacramento gave up a season high the following evening in a 118-106 loss at San Antonio.

Despite the defeat, guard Beno Udrih remained optimistic of a turnaround.

"We'll get out of it," he said. "Start getting better at the end of games; in the fourth quarter, finish the game. Take care of the ball a little better and be more patient."

With an 8-3 home record, the Kings have a good chance to earn a win Saturday as they'll face an opponent that's dropped 10 of 11 on the road this season.

They also have Evans, who is second among rookie scorers with 20.2 points per game. The team's leading scorer has also averaged 24.1 points in the five games this month.

This year's other first-round draft pick, Omri Casspi, scored a career-best 20 points off the bench in Wednesday's loss.

Minnesota could give Sacramento's beleaguered defense a break as it has one of the league's worst offenses (92.2).

By that measure, the Timberwolves had an average effort in Friday night's 104-92 road loss to the Lakers. Minnesota (3-20) trailed by only two at halftime but fell behind by 18 entering the final quarter in coach Kurt Rambis' second matchup with his former team.

The Lakers used their patented triangle offense to win the NBA title last season and Rambis, a former assistant, brought that over to Minnesota in his first season, with little success so far.

The team's only player to top 15 points Friday was Al Jefferson, who matched a season high with 24. He's also the only Minnesota player averaging more than 15 points at 16.0. It's a far cry from his career-best 23.0 points per game in 50 games last season before a torn ACL ended his campaign.

"We work hard every day to get where Kurt got last year, but it's going to take some time,'' Jefferson said. "It was a great experience, because they're running the same offense we run, but of course, we can learn a lot more."

The Timberwolves are also allowing 103.2 points per contest on 46.9 percent shooting, and they've given up an average of 119.5 in back-to-back losses in Sacramento.

Minnesota hasn't beaten the Kings on the road since March 7, 2008.

Kings serve up some 'home cookin'' against the Wolves

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Jason Thompson uses the phrase "home cookin'" to describe the success of his Kings on their home floor.

For Sacramento, the recipe has been simple: play at home, and be sure to mix in a lowly opponent.

The successful blend was evident again on Saturday night as the Kings feasted on the three-win Minnesota Timberwolves, 120-100, in Sacramento.

"Once we get off that plane we can smell that cookin' and when we come in here to Arco we've got to take care of home," Thompson said.

Thompson said the term might be an east coast thing, but "home cookin'" describes the feeling of being away from home, only to return to something you are really comfortable with.

"That's home cookin', that home-cooked meal can just get your head right and get you back on track."

The second-year big man out of Ryder was a big reason for the Kings success. Thompson, who averages a double-double, scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds on the night.

The Kings are now 9-3 at home, with seven of those wins coming against teams under .500.

The youthful Kings have an obvious comfort level at home; one of the first steps in transitioning to a winning franchise. In last season's 17-win season, the Kings didn't record their ninth home victory until their 63rd game in March.

"It was different last year, but now we've been taking care of our home court," Thompson said. "I think that's what is going to make or break us as a team.

"We take care of home and it takes a lot of pressure off us on the road. Once we get road wins we should be really good."

The Kings are 1-9 on the road, where seven of the 10 teams they have faced have winning records.

"I don't think we've got a problem on the road," Casspi said. "It's just bad luck. We lost a couple of games by 2, 4, 6 points.

"There is no reason for us not winning on the road too. We are learning a lot, we've got a young team. We're going to learn how to finish those games too."

Casspi was part of a Kings bench effort that scored 49 points in Saturday's contest. Reserve point guard Sergio Rodriguez added nine assists in 21 minutes. He had all nine of those assists in his first nine minutes on the court.

"I thought the bench really gave us the big lift," Sacramento head coach Paul Westphal said.

The formula will be set again for the Kings in their next home contest. They'll travel to Portland before returning home to play against the bottom-dwelling Washington Wizards on national television on Dec. 16.

However, the home schedule becomes much more arduous later this month. Sacramento will host the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets during a Kings homestand in late December.

"We want to win anything we play, but the realistic analysis of this NBA is it's tougher on the road and it's tougher against the teams that have good records," Westphal said.

The Timberwolves looked to run at every opportunity but couldn't keep up with the Sacramento offense.

"We were playing way too fast, turned the ball over and didn't set anything up," Timberwolves big man Kevin Love said. "We came out and thought we could outscore them, did really play well on defense. And they put up 120 points on us."

The Kings led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but an early third quarter Minnesota run cut that lead to just two points. Westphal said after the game that he had come close to calling a time out, but decided to let his young team play through it.

The young Kings responded, going on a 15-3 run and never looking back.

"I got up and was bringing my hands together (for the timeout)," Westphal said. "I think it's time for us to just figure it out.

"You can't really do that all the time with a young team, but I had confidence they would make something good happen."

First-round pick Tyreke Evans scored 18 points, adding five rebounds and five assists. He went right after fellow first-round pick Jonny Flynn.

"He is strong, but he is also a very small guard," Evans said.

The 20-year-old Evans is averaging 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. Only three players in NBA history have finished with those numbers: Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Oscar Robertson.

Minnesota had picked things up after dropping 15 straight, winning two of four games against Western Conference powers Denver and Utah. Since beating Utah though, the Timberwolves are again streaking in the wrong direction, having dropped four straight.
