Pacers-Wizards Preview

Tyler Hansbrough has put up back-to-back efforts that are exactly what the Indiana Pacers need while playing without leading scorer Danny Granger.

Hansbrough and the Pacers look to end a six-game road slide Saturday night when they try to go 2-0 against the Washington Wizards this season.

The rookie scored a season-high 21 points Friday in a 107-91 home win over New Jersey that snapped Indiana's overall six-game losing streak. The Pacers (7-13) improved to 2-1 playing without Granger, who is out at least four weeks with a foot injury and averages 24.4 points.

"He was playing as well as anybody on the team," coach Jim O'Brien said of Hansbrough. "His intensity on the court was something we needed."

In their first game since learning the news about Granger, the Pacers fell 102-91 to Portland on Wednesday despite Hansbrough finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double.

Hansbrough was drafted 13th overall after helping North Carolina win the NCAA title last season, and he missed the first four games with a shin injury. He made his debut Nov. 6 against Washington (7-13) with 13 points in a 102-86 victory.

He wasn't the only Pacers youngster to have a strong game Friday. Second-year center Roy Hibbert scored a career-high 20, making his first 3-pointer.

"They're going to be great players here for a long time," Pacers forward Troy Murphy said. "It's exciting for the fans to see them here. They're going to be the future."

Indiana hasn't won on the road since a 91-83 victory over New Jersey on Nov. 17. The Pacers have lost four of their last five visits to the Verizon Center - all with Granger.

"We can't dwell on Danny being out," Hibbert said. "We just have to put five out there at a time, and everybody work hard and hold the franchise down until Danny gets back."

Washington has lost three straight after falling 104-102 to Boston on Thursday. The Wizards weren't able to overcome a 37-point effort by the Celtics in the second quarter, also failing to get credit for an individual rebound in that period.

"When you get torched like we did in the second quarter defensively, it's very rare for a team to come back," coach Flip Saunders said.

Gilbert Arenas scored 25 points but missed two key free throws down the stretch. Arenas bounced back from an eight-point effort Sunday in a 98-94 loss at Detroit.

The Wizards star believes his club needs to end its habit of playing well only against top contenders.

"We get up for games like this," he said. "It's the other games we have to start getting up for. Right now, we're a bottom-feeder team."

The Wizards are 5-6 since Antawn Jamison made his season debut Nov. 18 after missing nine games with a shoulder injury. Jamison is averaging 14.3 points in his last four games, but he scored 29.7 per game in three meetings with Indiana last season.

The Pacers and Wizards finish the season series March 24 in Indianapolis.

Pacers win battle of the replay against Wizards

WASHINGTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The final seconds took an eternity. There were two video replays, an intentionally missed free throw and controversy galore. In the end, the Indiana Pacers ended with a 114-113 win over the Washington Wizards on Saturday.

The Pacers won on two Mike Dunleavy free throws with one-tenth of a second left in the game. With five-tenths of a second, the Scott Foster-led officiating crew, called for a replay, ruled that an out-of-bounds call went to Indiana. Earl Watson threw the ball into Dunleavy, who tried to shoot. The whistle blew, the clock read zero, and the officials conferred.

After a lengthy discussion and a lengthier look at the video monitor, Foster decided that Brendan Haywood had fouled Dunleavy with one-tenth of a second left. Dunleavy calmly sank the foul shots, and the Pacers had an unlikely win.

"Thank God for technology," Dunleavy said.

It was the second straight win for Indiana (8-13), who this week lost Danny Granger for four to six weeks with a torn right plantar fascia. Without the league's eighth-leading scorer and his 24.4 points per game, the Pacers needed lots of scoring help.

Besides Dunleavy, who scored 24 points, the most since returning from a knee injury eight games ago, Troy Murphy had a season-high 28 points just two shy of his career high.

The Pacers' heroics overshadowed a brilliant performance from Gilbert Arenas, who recorded a triple-double his first since Mar. 19, 2004. Arenas had 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds and two crucial missed free throws.

"It's really frustrating," Arenas said. "I've been shooting them all day. I don't even know why I'm sitting here talking about some free throws."

With 6.6 seconds left, and the Wizards (7-14) leading 113-112, Arenas was fouled by Dunleavy and for the second time in the last two games, missed two critical shots.

"I never fathomed that I'd be missing free throws again," Arenas said. "It's just mental because I'm making them in practice."

Washington, losers of four straight, seemed to have the game nearly under control after Earl Boykins hit a jumper with 1:22 to play. Tyler Hansbrough, who had 19 points 13 in the final quarter, hit a layup and after a Washington 24-second violation, a dunk to make it 111-109. Boykins followed with a dunk for a 113-109 lead with 22.3 seconds left.

On the Pacers' possession, Hansbrough was fouled with 13 seconds left, made the first foul shot and intentionally missed the second. In the scramble, Dunleavy was fouled and made both free throws to cut the lead to 113-112 with 13 seconds left. "It works every once in a while. I guess it's a 1 in 15 play." Hansbrough said "If you run it 15 times, it's going to work out once. That was our one time. We were lucky."

Arenas was fouled and missed the two free throws and then the fun began.

When it was over, Washington coach Flip Saunders was brief.

"We're inventing ways to lose," Saunders said.

Pacers coach Jim O'Brien, whose team handily beat New Jersey at home on Friday night, was pleased his team is finding ways to win.

"That was one for the ages. That was a great win for us to be able to get that, to be able to scratch out everything that we tried to do at the end," O'Brien said.

Indiana led Washington 66-52 at halftime after the testy Wizards were assessed three technical fouls. Saunders, Arenas and Caron Butler were each penalized.

In the third quarter, Washington outscored Indiana 38-21 for a 90-87 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Boykins had 10 points, but Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison and Arenas combined for just 10 more. Jamison ended with 31 one shy of his season-high and Butler had 23.

Saunders tried a new lineup, starting DeShawn Stevenson instead of Nick Young. Young came off the bench for 10 points. Stevenson, averaging barely more than two points, is there for his defense.

"Who cares about who starts?," Stevenson said.

"It's not about me."

It was more about his despondent backcourt mate. "Everybody in this arena knows what (Arenas) can do," Stevenson said. "You mess up, you mess up. At the end of the day, everyone in this locker room knows what he can do."
