Bobcats-Mavericks Preview

The acquisition of Stephen Jackson has improved the Charlotte Bobcats significantly, but the versatile swingman hasn't yet helped the team end its road woes.

Getting that done could be even more difficult going into Dallas.

The Bobcats look to avoid their 10th loss in 11 road games and beat the Mavericks for the first time in franchise history Saturday night.

Charlotte (9-12) has won six of nine after dropping its previous seven, and the turnaround is largely due to the Nov. 16 trade that brought Jackson from Golden State.

The Bobcats were last in the league in scoring with 82.4 points per game before the move, but they've averaged 95.7 with Jackson, who's scoring 18.5 per game with his new club.

Though he's had a big impact, Jackson hasn't been able to turn around the Bobcats' road fortunes. They were 0-4 away from home without him, and have gone 1-5 since his arrival.

Those struggles continued with a 104-85 loss at San Antonio on Friday. Jackson scored 23 points and Charlotte pulled within one at the end of the third quarter after trailing by as much as 22, but the Bobcats were outscored 32-14 while allowing the Spurs to shoot 71 percent in the fourth.

"We didn't get to the free-throw line and we took some bad shots," coach Larry Brown said. "We had a great comeback and we did some great things. We also did some unfortunate things."

Ending those struggles on the road could be doubly difficult against the Mavericks, who have won their first 10 meetings with the Bobcats by an average of 11.6 points.

Dallas (16-7) won 100-83 in Charlotte in the teams' first matchup last season, but the Bobcats stayed close in a 95-90 defeat in Dallas on Dec. 11, 2008 - their narrowest margin of defeat in the history of the series.

The Mavericks pulled away late in that game, with Jason Terry scoring 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter and Dirk Nowitzki making a key 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Nowitzki, who finished that game with 23 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, is averaging 25.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in his career against the Bobcats. He's led Dallas in scoring in seven of the 10 meetings.

Nowitzki had a team-high 25 points in a 106-93 win at Miami on Friday, and Erick Dampier added a season-high 20 and 17 rebounds.

"When you double-team, you're going to give up something," said Dampier, who had totaled six points over his previous three games. "They double-teamed Dirk tonight and it gave guys open shots or hit me for easy shots around the basket."

The Mavericks are 7-3 at home, where Nowitzki is averaging 30.8 points. Only Denver's Carmelo Anthony scores more points per game at home with 31.5.

Jackson averaged 22.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists while shooting 48.9 percent from the field in three games against the Mavericks while with the Warriors last season.

Nowitzki helps Mavs improve to 11-0 against Bobcats

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Leading by six, Charlotte was 89 seconds away from finally crossing "Beat Dallas" off the franchise's to-do list.

Dirk Nowitzki didn't let it happen, scoring 28 of his game-high 36 points in the second half and overtime as the Mavericks improved to 11-0 against the Bobcats with a 98-97 victory Saturday. Dallas remains the only team in the league that Charlotte hasn't defeated since joining the NBA in 2004-05.

Nowitzki scored the last six points in regulation as the Mavs erased an 85-79 deficit in the final 1:29, capping the spurt with a 17-foot fadeaway with 10.9 seconds left. The Bobcats never got a shot off at the other end, with Nowitzki tying up Gerald Wallace under the basket.

Nowitzki, who started out just 3-for-13 in the first half, scored six more points during the extra session. Trailing 95-94, he came through with back-to-back turnaround jumpers over Boris Diaw, the last one with 1.8 seconds remaining. Stephen Jackson's 28-foot shot at the buzzer was off the mark, dropping Charlotte to 1-10 on the road this season.

"It was definitely a volume shooting game for me and I'm just happy a couple of them went in at the end," said Nowitzki, who was 14-for-34 in his eighth 30-point game of the season.

It wasn't his first time playing overtime hero this season. On Nov. 16, Nowitzki hit a fadeaway 18-footer as time expired for a 115-113 overtime win at Milwaukee. Two nights later, he scored 11 of his 41 points in OT in a 99-94 victory against San Antonio. He has eight career game-winning shots with less than 5 seconds on the clock.

"The more opportunities you give him, the more good looks you give him, the more he's going to get into a rhythm and start knocking them down," said Mavericks forward Shawn Marion, who added 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.

The Bobcats' defense on Nowitzki in the overtime was complicated by foul trouble, with five personals on both Diaw and Wallace.

"Dirk's a tough player," Jackson said. "We played good D on him and he hit some big shots. That's what big players do. You can't stop him every time."

Erick Dampier had his second straight double-double with 14 points, a game-high 18 boards and three blocks. Jason Terry struggled with his range, finishing with 11 points on 4-for-19 shooting. The Mavericks, whose last five home wins have been by a combined 11 points, shot 39.8 percent for the game. They are now 7-4 when shooting less than 44 percent, after going 6-24 in such games last season.

Jackson led four Bobcats in double figures with 28 points. During one stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters, he scored 14 straight points for Charlotte. Wallace added 23 points and 16 rebounds for his 14th double-double. Raymond Felton had 20 points and eight assists and Tyson Chandler scored 11. The Bobcats were outrebounded 50-44 and the Mavs registered a 23-8 edge in second-chance points.

After falling behind by 12 points in the first quarter, Charlotte opened the second period with a 19-4 run. The Bobcats were up 46-43 at intermission and stretched the lead to 70-62 heading into the fourth. They lost a little composure in the fourth, turning the ball over five times and getting pounded on the boards (14-5).

"We had a couple of really key turnovers late. That was the killer, and when you can't get the ball to your point guard when there's 10 or 12 seconds to go, that's inexcusable," Bobcats head coach Larry Brown said.

With the Mavericks playing the second game of a back-to-back set, forward Josh Howard was kept out of the lineup as a precautionary measure as he continues his comeback from offseason surgery on his left ankle. He played 23 minutes in Friday's win at Miami, contributing five points and four assists, but has missed 19 of 24 games this season.

The game was attended by approximately 150 soldiers from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for the sixth annual "Seats for Soldiers" event, sponsored by the Dallas Mavericks and American Airlines. The wounded soldiers sat courtside in seats donated by season-ticket holders, valued at more than $235,000.

"It's one of the great gestures I've ever seen a franchise do," Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said. "My hat's off to them, and to our club for organizing this type of event. It's really important. It's really meaningful. These people are so deserving of a chance to come out and watch a game and be that close to the action. It's really special."
