INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Indiana Pacers finally have a reason to smile. Playing the New Jersey Nets can do that, but the Pacers' reasons Friday were less about a team with the NBA's worst record and more about the play of two young players.
With rookie Tyler Hansbrough scoring a career-high 21 points, and with second-year center Roy Hibbert adding 20, the Pacers pulled away from the struggling Nets on Friday, snapping a six-game losing streak and winning, 107-91, in front of 12,175 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
After a five-game winning streak, Indiana had lost 10 of 11 games.
"It doesn't erase everything, but it sure feels good to get a win," Hansbrough said. It was the Pacers' first victory since November 25, when they beat the Los Angeles Clippers at home.
Considering the opponent, it was a victory they needed.
"Let's call it what it is," said Pacers swingman Mike Dunleavy, Jr., whose 15 points were his second-highest total in seven games since returning from a knee injury. "We're playing a team that's struggling this season. They have two wins. We're at home. This is one we needed to get."
The Pacers (7-13), playing their second game without injured All-Star Danny Granger -- expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks with a foot injury -- took a six-point first-quarter lead, and the Nets (2-21) never got closer than four again.
The Nets, after losing their first 17 games, had won two of four.
"When you lose your best player, other people step up," Nets coach KiKi Vandeweghe said of the Pacers and Granger. "What you learn in the NBA is hard lessons in how to lose, fail and come back. I think what we're trying to do is get in the game and tonight we stopped doing that. We just need to focus on doing that."
The game wasn't the first time Hansbrough, the Pacers' first-round selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, had contributed this season.
But he did say it was easily the most comfortable he had felt in 15 games.
Hansbrough, who had his first career double -double Wednesday in a loss to Portland, shot 8 of 18 from the floor Friday, and looked more at ease shooting from the perimeter than he had previously. After entering the game shooting 68.5 percent from the free-throw line, he made 5 of 6 free throws Friday.
"I just went out there and played basketball," said Hansbrough, who had his minutes increased to a season-high 24 minutes after being limited early while rehabilitating from a shin injury. "I wasn't thinking about things and just played. It's been a while. I want to keep playing and get used to our style and continue to get comfortable."
Hansbrough also had seven rebounds, four offensive, and when the Nets pulled to within five points -- 76-71 -- with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter, Hansbrough hit two jumps shots to push the lead to nine.
"He was playing as well as anybody on the team tonight," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. Hibbert, in his first full season as a starter, not only had 15 first-half points to help Indiana pull away on his 23rd birthday, he also had his first career 3-point field goal in the fourth quarter. "We played together tonight and we must continue to play together," Hibbert said. "We can't dwell on Danny being out. This is a great birthday present for me."
Dunleavy, who like Hansbrough had his minutes increased by the Pacers' medical staff before the game, made all three of his 3-pointers.
"I'm getting there," Dunleavy said. "I'm really getting there. I'm just trying to help the younger guys progress who may not have a grasp yet for what we're trying to do. I think me being out there helped that."
The continued struggles of the Nets helped, too. Nets center Brook Lopez had a game-high 25 points and guard Devin Harris had 18, but New Jersey shot 33 of 91 from the field and made just 3 of 13 3-point field goals. They also were outrebounded by Indiana, 55-41.
"We have to find a way to pull it together," Harris said ."We just need better effort. We'll on the things we need to get better at."
Said Lopez, "I thought we were doing a good job tonight regardless of the score. We were still fighting in there. We have to keep fighting."
