Allen Iverson's 10-year run with the Philadelphia 76ers ended three years ago with the team in the midst of a 12-game losing streak.

With one more defeat, his second stint with the Sixers will begin the same way.

Philadelphia will try again to end the NBA's longest active losing streak as it continues a five-game homestand Friday night against the Houston Rockets.

The Sixers had lost 11 straight when they traded Iverson - the backbone of their franchise for the previous decade - to Denver on Dec. 19, 2006. They eventually dropped a 12th consecutive game, and they'll have to beat Houston if they want to avoid matching that skid.

The signing of Iverson, prompted by an injury to point guard Lou Williams, hasn't immediately helped. The 38-year-old is just 7 of 21 from the field in his first two games, with the Sixers (5-17) averaging 84.5 points in a pair of home losses.

They lost 90-86 on Wednesday to an injury-depleted Detroit team that was lacking Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince.

"It's going to have to be one of the best games ever from us in order to win," Iverson said.

Philadelphia also hoped the return of Iverson would boost ticket sales, and the team sold out the Wachovia Center for the first time this season in his debut on Monday.

But just 12,136 fans watched Wednesday's loss as the Sixers fell to 3-7 at home. Their average of fewer than 13,000 fans is among the lowest in the NBA.

"It's going to get better," Iverson said. "This is one of these times when you find out what type of character you have as men."

The Rockets (12-9) have shown resilience this season while playing without injured stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, and their 7-5 road record includes impressive victories over the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah.

Houston has won four of five overall and is coming off a 95-85 home victory over Cleveland on Wednesday night, as the team got big performances from leading scorers Trevor Ariza and Aaron Brooks.

Brooks had 27 points and Ariza added 26 on 11-of-19 shooting. Ariza had been 31 of 91 (34.1 percent) from the field in his previous five games.

"It was real big for me to get my confidence back up so that my teammates give me the ball again," Ariza told the Rockets' official Web site. "It feels good. I'm happy that I'm starting to come out of this little slump I was in. Once one or two go in, you feel like the rim is huge and that's how I felt tonight."

The Rockets also held the Cavs to 40.0 percent shooting, with LeBron James going 8 of 21. Houston has struggled defensively at times, but its last six opponents are averaging just 92.0 points.

"I don't think too many people have talked about our defense so far, so it's nice to point to (Wednesday's) game as an example of what we're capable of doing when we really focus on defense," forward Shane Battier said.

The Sixers have been able to score on Houston lately, shooting above 50 percent and averaging 102.5 points while winning four straight against the Rockets over the last two seasons.

Supporting cast helps Rockets hand Sixers 12th straight loss

PHILADELPHIA (NBA.com exclusive) -- November 18, 2009 must seem like eons ago for the Philadelphia 76ers.

On that night, the Sixers ousted the Charlotte Bobcats by two points.

From there, it has been one maddening loss after another. Philadelphia's losing streak was extended to 12 after falling to the Houston Rockets 96-91 Friday night at the Wachovia Center. The Sixers last dropped 12 in a row from Nov. 25-Dec.20, 2006.

The Sixers are also 0-3 with the addition of Allen Iverson.

Eight of the 12 losses have been by six or fewer points.

"We're snakebitten right now," said Iverson, who scored 20 points in 35 minutes despite playing with a sore shin. "It just seems like we can't get anything to go our way."

Each night, there have been different reasons for the outcome. Against Houston, the overriding factor was the bench.

The Rockets' bench had 46 points compared to only six for the Sixers.

Those 46 points came from three players -- Carl Landry (20), Chase Budinger (15) and Kyle Lowry (11).

"It was good that our bench gave us a spark," Lowry said. "Our second unit is playing pretty good right now. On this team, any one of us can step it up at any time."

Playing without Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, the Rockets have managed to win 13 of their first 22 games, including an 8-5 road record.

They wouldn't be where they are without Aaron Brooks. Once again, the lightning-quick guard was tremendous with 19 points in 35 minutes. After Iverson got the Sixers within 94-91 with 1:06 remaining, Brooks sealed the road win with a tough baseline jumper with 8.5 seconds left.

With one second left on the shot clock, Brooks gathered the ball and scored from about 18 feet.

"I got a little rhythm going," said Brooks, who was 3-for-5 from 3-point territory. "I was able to hit some shots. It felt great to hit that last shot."

The Sixers were hitting their shots en route to a 17-point lead in the first quarter. But they were unable to sustain any of that momentum.

Andre Iguodala paced the Sixers with 24 points, Elton Brand had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Thaddeus Young chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Samuel Dalembert grabbed 14 rebounds.

Philadelphia hit only 42 percent of its shots and 1-for-6 from 3-point land. Long-range shooting has been a problem all season.

There have been far too many problems, especially during the 12-game skid.

"We know that we are not going to play a perfect game," Sixers coach Eddie Jordan said. "But we did play hard. We did play smart for the most part. We are all going to make mistakes, but we lessened those mistakes from what we had in the previous games. The locker room is solid. They are professionals. They come to work every day and they are still playing together."

So are the short-handed Rockets.

Six players scored in double figures with Landry leading the way off the bench. Starters Trevor Ariza (13 rebounds, 12 rebounds) and Luis Scola (14 points, 11 rebounds) each registered double-doubles. It was Scola's 11th double-double this season.

When the starters struggled, the bench elevated its level of play, which has been the mantra of the Rockets all season.

"We've been doing that all year," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "We have somebody step up all the time. That's why we've been able to win a lot of games because our guys respond. I don't think anybody thinks of themselves as a star and they all just play together."
