Hawks-Raptors Preview

One of the top-scoring teams in the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks are coming off their most lopsided win of the season. The Toronto Raptors are already quite familiar with Atlanta's offensive potential.

The Hawks, who had their highest-scoring game in 16 years last week against the Raptors, look to win their third straight Friday night in Toronto.

Atlanta (15-6) defeated Chicago 118-83 on Wednesday for its third win in four games after losing three of four.

The Hawks led 56-42 at halftime before opening the second half with a 20-4 run to put the game out of reach. Jamal Crawford led the way with a season-high 29 points as all 12 Atlanta players scored.

"We came out and took care of business from beginning to end,'' coach Mike Woodson said. "Everybody got a chance to play. It was a total team effort.''

The decisive victory surpassed last week's blowout of Toronto for Atlanta's largest margin of victory on the season.

The Hawks defeated the Raptors 146-115 on Dec. 2, as the team had its best offensive output since Jan. 30, 1993, when they beat Philadelphia 149-123. Al Horford had 24 points to lead nine Atlanta players in double figures.

"Anytime a team scores 140 points on you, you can't say we did anything right on defense," Toronto's Jarrett Jack said after that loss. "We should be embarrassed. Everybody should be embarrassed. I don't want to take anything away from (the Hawks), but I know they don't average 140 points a game."

Led by Joe Johnson and his 21.0 points a contest, Atlanta is actually averaging 104.4 points, tied for sixth in the NBA.

Toronto (10-14) is allowing an average of 108.7 points, ranking it 29th in the league. The Raptors are 3-14 when they give up at least 100.

Toronto appeared to be turning things around on the defensive end recently, allowing an average of 82.5 points in winning two straight heading into Wednesday's matchup with Milwaukee. They couldn't make it three consecutive solid defensive performances in a row, losing 117-95.

"Other guys got a chance to step up today and I don't think anybody really did,'' Toronto coach Jay Triano said. "It came down to not being able to get stops. We had matchup problems all night long.''

The Raptors allowed Milwaukee to shoot 52.5 percent from the floor, falling to 0-9 when opponents eclipse the 48.3 percent mark. The Hawks shot 59.1 percent - 52.4 percent (11 of 21) from 3-point range - against Toronto last week.

Despite another disappointing defensive effort Wednesday, Chris Bosh provided another strong offensive performance. He finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds, and has averaged 25.8 points and 13.5 boards in four games since being limited to a season-low two points in 16 minutes against the Hawks.

The four-time All-Star sat out much of the first half of the Atlanta game due to foul trouble and most of the second when the game got out of hand.

Toronto has lost three straight and five of the last six meetings with Atlanta.

Hawks bench helps Atlanta soar over Raptors

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- The smile on Joe Johnson's face said it all.

Hopping off the bench to greet his teammates during a fourth quarter timeout, Johnson wore the grin of a player that had demolished his second straight opponent.

The Atlanta Hawks are not holding down the third spot in the Eastern Conference by accident.

While they didn't score 146 points on the Toronto Raptors this time around, they did use a 111-89 victory to show their Eastern Conference rivals that they've got a lot of catching up to do if they'd like to move up in the standings.

With Johnson not even entering the game in the fourth, the Hawks dismantled the Raptors for the second time in just over a week. This one may have hurt more because it validated the Hawks superiority.

"It's not disheartening, they beat us," Chris Bosh said. "You're going to get beat. Sometimes teams are better than you," he continued. "They're better than us. They smoked us once and they beat us again today."

After the 31-point drubbing in Atlanta, the Raptors held a team meeting to address concerns both on and off the court and went forward to win three of their last four. Friday night, they took a step back.

While Johnson scored 20 points for the Hawks, the story for Atlanta was their bench. Scoring 55 of their 111 points, they played big minutes as four reserves finished in double-figures, led by 15 points apiece from Jamal Crawford and Maurice Evans.

In addition to Johnson spending the fourth quarter cheering on his teammates from the bench, Marvin Williams and Josh Smith were the only Atlanta starters to log more than 30 minutes.

"If they are playing well, they'll play," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said of his reserves. "Our bench was huge, they were tremendous tonight, they really were."

Thanks to a buzzer-beating jumper from Antoine Wright, the Raptors trailed just 29-27 after an opening quarter that showed promise of leading to a close game. That didn't last long as the Atlanta reserves took care of business in the second quarter, extending their lead to a 61-48 advantage at the break. The Hawks bench shot a sizzling 13-for-15 from the floor through the first half.

"We knew that they would come out trying to reconcile what happened in Atlanta." Evans said. "They came out with an embarrassing loss and that sparked them to have a three-game win streak when they left. We knew they really wanted to avenge that loss. We came out and had focus and I think it paid off for us."

While the Hawks were working as a team on both ends of the floor, the Raptors seemed to have elected not to help each other defensively and instead settled for watching the Hawks blow by them to the hoop or swing the ball to find the open man for jumper after jumper.

Shooting 52 percent for the game, Atlanta was patient on the offensive end, waiting until they got just the shot they wanted. More often than not, it was an uncontested one.

"We are just trying to get good ball movement, get penetration and make the easy play," Johnson said of the team's offensive efficiency. "In the second quarter we really did that and we extended the lead. Then coming out of the halftime we knew we didn't want to let up and let those guys back into the game."

While the Raptors had Andrea Bargnani back into their starting lineup and Jose Calderon off the bench after both missed the team's previous contest against the Milwaukee Bucks, Calderon played just seven minutes before leaving the game. Aggravating his hip injury, he did not return and Toronto struggled taking care of the ball, finishing with as many turnovers (17) as they had assists.

Trailing by double-digits throughout the second half, the game felt like another 31-point blowout with the Toronto crowd unleashing boos fast and furious on each failed Raptors possession.

Bosh was held to just 14 points and 10 rebounds, well below his season average of 24.3 points per game. Bargnani scored 17 and Jarrett Jack added 13, but the Raptors biggest issues were once again on the defensive end as they fell to 0-8 on the season when allowing opponents to shoot better than 50 percent.

"We've been there before as a team and as a franchise," Johnson said of the Toronto crowd booing their team. "It's tough. I think those guys play hard and they give everything they got, they just came up a little short," he continued. "When our bench plays like that, man, we're a tough team to beat."

After suffering Atlanta's wrath twice, the Raptors agree.
