The San Antonio Spurs aren't accustomed to four-game losing streaks. The Sacramento Kings could tell them all about it.

The Spurs and Kings will both attempt to avoid a fourth consecutive loss when they meet at the AT&T Center on Wednesday night.

San Antonio (9-9) expected to contend for the NBA title after acquiring Richard Jefferson from Milwaukee in June, but the Spurs, who are trying for their 13th straight winning season, have been plagued by inconsistency.

Short-term injuries to stars Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker earlier this season didn't help. Jefferson, who averaged 19.6 points for the Bucks in 2008-09, has struggled mightily of late, averaging 7.8 points on 33.3 percent shooting in the last five games.

Defensively, San Antonio ranks near the middle of the pack with 97.1 points per game allowed. In each of the previous 12 seasons, the Spurs ranked no lower than third in that category.

They couldn't stop Utah when it mattered in Monday night's 104-101 road loss. San Antonio blew a 15-point lead in the first half, then trailed by double digits in the third quarter. They rallied to take a lead with 28 seconds left, but the Jazz's Deron Williams nailed a go-ahead jumper six seconds later.

"I thought for most of the game we played pretty well, but in the third quarter we didn't come out with the same energy and they jumped on us," said Parker, who finished with 22 points but also had five turnovers to give him 11 in the last two games. "In the fourth quarter, it was a battle."

The loss left the Spurs one defeat shy of their first four-game skid since March 12-17, 2008. San Antonio has lost four in a row only three times since Duncan entered the league in 1997-98.

The Kings, meanwhile, are on the verge of their 16th skid of four games or longer since their last playoff appearance in 2006.

Led by rookie Tyreke Evans and second-year forward Jason Thompson, Sacramento (9-11) has scored at least 100 points in all but two games since Nov. 2. One of those two was Tuesday night's 96-94 loss at New Orleans, the fifth straight road defeat for the Kings and their third loss in a row overall.

Andres Nocioni missed a pair of free throws - one intentionally - with less than a second to go. Those misses spoiled one of the better defensive efforts of the season for the Kings, who have held opponents to fewer than 100 points just seven times.

"It hurts to play as well as we did and not come away with the win," coach Paul Westphal said. "When we start learning how to win these games, it's going to be fun to watch."

Evans had a team-best 25 points for his fourth straight 20-point performance, but the rookie guard was held to six points at San Antonio in his third NBA game, a 113-94 defeat Oct. 31.

Parker had 24 points and Jefferson added 21 as the Spurs won their sixth straight over the Kings and their 17th in 20 meetings since March 31, 2004. They've also won six straight and 10 of 11 at home in that span.

Jefferson finds flow in 118-106 win over Kings

SAN ANTONIO (NBA.com exclusive) -- It couldn't have been more obvious if Gregg Popovich had taken a sign that read "Get me involved" and held it over Richard Jefferson's head.

With a three-game losing streak and the prospects of dropping to its first losing record after 19 games in six seasons, the Spurs went out of their way to make their Wednesday night matchup with Sacramento the slump buster for Jefferson as the Spurs beat the Kings 118-106 at AT&T Center.

Jefferson, acquired by San Antonio in an offseason trade with Milwaukee, took advantage of most every ball his teammates teed up for him. He was 11-for-18 for 23 points, his best night since Nov. 11.

Tony Parker, who had two of his first four assists go to Jefferson, said the plan was as obvious as it looked -- to get Jefferson involved from the moment the team ripped away its warmups.

"That was a big thing for us tonight. We really wanted to get him going," said Parker, who finished with 18 points and 11 assists. "Me, personally, I was looking for him a lot tonight."

Jefferson's 12.8 points-per-game average through 18 starts is seven points worse than last season and the worst since he finished below double figures his rookie year. He'd gone 11 games without hitting the 20-point mark in scoring. In the Spurs' three-game losing streak he shot 10-for-28 and hit double figures once, barely, with 10 points against Denver.

But he quickly got traction against Sacramento with eight first-quarter points on seven shots. His second quarter was even better, 10 points after going 5-for-5 with four rebounds and three assists as the Spurs led by as much as 12.

"I'd like to believe that the more I play the more used to the offense I'm going to get," Jefferson said. "My teammates did a great job of getting the ball in the right spots."

The Spurs (10-9) took the Jefferson idea one step further, because it was a pretty good night for the three new guys in the starting lineup.

Antonio McDyess, who had a standout game two weeks ago with a 15-point, 14-rebound performance in Houston but not much else to bulk up his five rebounds per game, had five rebounds in the first quarter and finished with nine boards in 23 minutes.

Keith Bogans, who's shooting barely 40 percent and .250 from 3-point land, hit his first three shots -- all 3-pointers -- and he finished with those nine points while spending some of the rest of the night defending rookie Tyreke Evans.

It took more than eight minutes before a player from last season's team (Parker hit a driving layup with 4:50 remaining in the opening quarter) scored a basket.

Evans started slowly for the Kings (9-12), who played their fourth game in five nights including a two-point loss the previous night in New Orleans. But he scored 11 points and had a pair of steals in the third quarter on the way to a 19-point night. He needed 20 shots to get them, and his five assists were tempered with four turnovers.

"We didn't execute there at the end," Evans said. "I had a couple of turnovers, and I think I should have pulled up a couple of times instead of going to the basket."

Evans had a chance to go to cut it to a one-point game with less than five minutes remaining in the game. But he missed an eight-footer, and he followed that by having a layup blocked by Tim Duncan as the Spurs closed out the game by outscoring Sacramento 17-8.

Though Jefferson was looked for early in the game, the Spurs apparently aren't comfortable enough yet with a new face to go to him late. Manu Ginobili scored 11 of those final 17 points (he also had an assist, steal and rebound). When San Antonio went on a 14-point run to finish the first half, Ginobili had eight of those including a pair of 3-pointers. San Antonio finished 8-for-9 from the 3-point line.

Ginobili had 20 points, making both 3-point attempts and all eight free throws.

"That's him, and that's what we're accustomed to seeing, him making those spurts and finishing out quarters," Jefferson said.
