Pistons-76ers Preview

The struggling Philadelphia 76ers signed Allen Iverson last week hoping the fan favorite can help boost sagging attendance and provide some excitement.

The Detroit Pistons had much bigger goals in mind when they traded for the superstar just over a year ago.

Set to play his second game since returning to Philadelphia, Iverson looks to help the 76ers avoid losing their 11th in a row Wednesday night against a Pistons team that acquired the 10-time All-Star last season hoping he could lead it to a championship.

After announcing his intention to retire two weeks ago following a brief stint with Memphis, Iverson decided to accept the veteran's minimum salary to return to the team that selected him with the first overall pick in the 1996 draft.

In his first 10 seasons with Philadelphia, Iverson posted the highest scoring average in team history (28.1), was second on the points list (19,583) and holds the record for 3-pointers (877). He was named league MVP en route to leading the Sixers to the NBA finals in 2001.

Philadelphia (5-16) doesn't have the same playoff aspirations this season.

With the third-worst record in the league, Philadelphia needed to create some sort of buzz. The Sixers were 29th in attendance in their first eight games with an average of 11,965 fans, but noticed a considerable spike in Iverson's season debut.

In front of a sellout crowd of 20,664, Iverson finished with 11 points on 4 of 11 shooting in 38 minutes in Monday's 93-83 loss to Denver. He was welcomed with a video tribute and the crowd roared in approval when Iverson was introduced and planted a kiss on the centercourt logo.

Despite all the hoopla, Iverson's rousing return did little to mask the fact that the Sixers are playing poorly. Philadelphia, which lost in Detroit 88-81 on Nov. 8, is trying to avoid dropping 11 in a row for the first time since Nov. 14-Dec. 5, 1995, the year before Iverson's rookie season.

"I haven't been here long enough to put a finger on one or two things (wrong)," Iverson said. "Tonight, with the way the guys competed, I don't know how they lost nine games in a row. I couldn't see it, not from the team I was playing with. We'll get it together, believe me."

This situation is vastly different than what Iverson entered when he joined the Pistons a year ago.

Detroit acquired Iverson from Denver on Nov. 3, 2008, hoping the former scoring champ could lead it to a championship after three straight conference finals exits.

"We think he is going to fit with exactly what we stand for here," president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said after the trade. "It's all about winning and being in the big dance at the end of the year."

Iverson and the Pistons fell well short of those goals.

Iverson averaged 17.5 points and Detroit went 24-30 in the games he played. He missed 23 of the last 26 regular-season games with back problems, and the Pistons were swept by top-seeded Cleveland in the first round of the playoffs.

Things haven't been much better for the Pistons (8-12) this year, although they're showing signs of turning things around.

Detroit is coming off Sunday's 98-94 win over Washington, its third victory in four games following a seven-game skid.

Rodney Stuckey scored a team-high 25 with Ben Gordon being slowed by a sprained left ankle. Gordon, who finished with five points in 12 minutes, had a game-high 23 points against the Sixers last month.

Philadelphia's Andre Iguodala, averaging a team-high 19.5 points, scored 24 in the first meeting.

Pistons steal win from Sixers

PHILADELPHIA (NBA.com exclusive) -- Entering Wednesday's game, the Detroit Pistons already knew they would be without Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince.

Right before it was time to play the Philadelphia 76ers, Ben Gordon realized that his left ankle sprain didn't feel good enough to play.

And the Pistons still managed to pull out a clutch 90-86 victory over the struggling Sixers, who have now lost 11 straight. The Sixers are 0-2 since they signed Allen Iverson.

The Pistons (9-12) improved to 3-8 and won their third consecutive game thanks to a balanced effort and terrific defense down the stretch.

"We knew we would win with defense in this game, especially with Ben out," said Detroit forward Jonas Jerebko, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds in 38-plus solid minutes. "We made some big shots in the fourth quarter. It was defense which won us this game."

Guard Rodney Stuckey sure made up for the injured trio by scoring 27 points on 10-for-19 shooting. He added eight assists and five rebounds.

Even more impressive was this: Stuckey wanted the ball in his hands. That was evident as hit a short jumper from the baseline with 8.7 seconds remaining to give the Pistons an 88-86 advantage.

"You saw a lot of growth in a young man," Pistons coach John Kuester said of Stuckey. "I've been telling people about how good he can be. He can be one of the best guards in the league and he showed it."

Stuckey scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.

"I like having the ball in my hands," Stuckey said. "I have confidence in myself and my teammates have a lot of confidence in me."

Andre Iguodala had a wide-open look on a 3-pointer to win the game for the Sixers, but his shot clanged off the rim.

It's been a frustrating stretch for the Sixers, who haven't won since Nov. 18 against the Charlotte Bobcats.

"We need to get a win quick, fast and in a hurry," said Sixers guard Willie Green.

Iguodala led the way with 18 points and nine assists while Samuel Dalembert had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Elton Brand also scored 17 points.

For the second straight game, Allen Iverson scored 11 points. Iverson also committed six turnovers in 33 minutes.

"It's going to get better," Iverson said. "This is one of these times when you find out what type of character you have as men. Everybody will get it going and we'll get this monkey off our back."

Over this 11-game losing streak, the Sixers have lost six times by five points or less.

They'll have to wait until Friday to try and snap this skid against the Houston Rockets.

"This has been a tough stretch," Green said. "What we do is go back to work and come back ready to play on Friday against Houston. We can't worry about losing streaks or anything like that."

The Pistons placed five players in double figures. They also outrebounded Philadelphia, 45-32 while hitting 21-for-24 from the free throw line.

If you get good shots, make your free throws and win on the boards, good things generally happen.

"We're definitely growing," said Detroit's Kwame Brown, who scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench. "I just can't wait until we get back as a full unit and I think that guys will have a better rhythm about themselves."
