Timberwolves-Raptors Preview

Though off to a disappointing start, the Toronto Raptors have been one of the NBA's top 3-point shooting teams, and matchups with the Minnesota Timberwolves seem to bring out the best in their perimeter players.

With a chance to win three straight for the first time this season, the Raptors look to extend a 10-game winning streak versus the Timberwolves and continue their long-range shooting success against them Tuesday night.

Winners of back-to-back games for the third time this season, Toronto (9-13) will try to avoid its first loss to Minnesota (3-17) since a 108-97 home defeat Jan. 21, 2004. The Raptors have averaged 104.2 points and shot 44.0 percent from 3-point range during the streak.

Toronto is fourth in the NBA in 3-point shooting, making 38.7 percent of its attempts. Two of the three teams ahead of the Raptors in that category - Phoenix and Cleveland - have winning percentages above .700.

The Raptors are far from that level of success, but two straight road wins have given them some confidence. They beat Chicago 110-78 on Saturday night after a 109-107 overtime victory against Washington the previous evening snapped a five-game losing streak.

"The last couple of games we saw everybody helping each other, everybody telling everybody if you make a mistake it doesn't matter," guard Jose Calderon said. "Somebody will help you. It's no problem at all."

The Raptors have been particularly sharp defensively, holding their last two opponents under 40 percent shooting. They had surrendered at least 100 points in 12 straight games, losing nine, before shutting down the Bulls.

"We have a chance to be a good defensive team," Toronto forward Chris Bosh said. "It's just all about effort and work."

Bosh had a relatively easy night versus the Bulls, recording 25 points and 12 rebounds in 22 minutes before the Raptors emptied their bench. He had 31 points and 16 rebounds in 40 minutes against the Wizards.

Bosh will face Minnesota's Al Jefferson in perhaps the most compelling matchup of this game. Jefferson missed both contests against the Raptors last season due to a torn right ACL.

Jefferson had surgery on that knee in February, and has had an inconsistent start to the season as he tries to make his way back to 100 percent. He is scoring 15.8 points per game, 7.3 below last season's average.

The 6-foot-10 forward had 15 points and 11 rebounds to help Minnesota beat Utah 108-101 on Saturday night.

Jefferson has gotten some much-needed help in the frontcourt, with Kevin Love playing well in his first two games of the season. Love, who broke his left hand in the preseason, had 18 points and 10 rebounds versus the Jazz after posting 11 points and 11 rebounds in his season debut, a 98-89 loss to New Orleans on Friday night.

"He's worked real hard on his game and then he got hurt," Jefferson said. "Now he's just showing what he can do."

Love, a 6-10 forward, averaged 11.1 points and 9.1 rebounds as a rookie and 15.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games against the Raptors.

Raptors pull away for gritty win over Wolves

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- On a Hardwood Classics night where the Toronto Raptors were the Toronto Huskies taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Raptors found themselves in a dog fight as they clawed their way to a 94-88 victory.

The win gave Toronto its first three-game winning streak of the season, but it didn't come easily. Shooting just 32 percent from the floor, the Raptors allowed the Timberwolves to hang around until the final minutes of the game.

With the Timberwolves also shooting just 37 percent from the floor -- marking the third straight game the Raptors held their opponent to less than 40 percent shooting -- the game was not the most aesthetically pleasing. Still, it was the kind of win the Raptors needed, as a team still looking for their defensive identity.

"I think it's beautiful," head coach Jay Triano said. "We told our guys in training camp, if you play good defense, even on nights you can't make shots or struggle making shots, you will stay in games long enough to find a way to win."

Without starting point guard Jose Calderon who missed the game with a sore hip, Jarrett Jack got the start and made the most of his minutes, stuffing the stat sheet as he finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. He also shot 11-for-12 from the free-throw line.

"Jarrett did a great job," Chris Bosh said. "He's playing his basketball. He's a good leader. He plays his role and when his number was called today, he was a professional. He's always ready."

Bosh agreed with his head coach on the quality of the win.

"A win is a win to me," he said. "I've never been picky in that category. As long as you find a way. That's what it's about."

Despite their awful shooting, the Raptors held an eight-point advantage at the half. After they trailed by as many as 11 points, the Timberwolves fought back and cut their deficit to 64-63 going into the fourth.

Bosh scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and had a handful of highlight-worthy plays, although none was more important than the baseline, reverse lay-up he hit while being fouled midway through the fourth quarter. Lying on the floor for a moment, as the crowd came alive, the play seemed to wake up his team.

"He's a tough matchup," Kevin Love said. "He's left-handed, he's unorthodox, he gets to the foul line. He can rebound and he can really score inside and outside. He's one of those guys who can really do it all out there."

With 4:30 remaining, Andrea Bargnani got the loudest ovation of the night when he kept the Raptors' NBA-record streak of 882 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer alive. He also helped Toronto stay afloat.

The Timberwolves came back to tie the game on a jump shot from Love, but a behind-the-back pass attempt from Jonny Flynn turned into a Hedo Turkoglu steal and dunk. On the Raptors' next possession, Antoine Wright hit his only shot of the night, a corner 3 that all but sealed the game for the Raptors.

Despite the turnover, Flynn had a strong game in front of his family and friends who made the trip from Niagara Falls for the game. The rookie finished with 17 points and eight assists, while Love added 18 points off of the bench. Al Jefferson had a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double in the loss.

Although shooting just 2-for-11 from the floor, Turkoglu finished with 16 points, hitting 12 of his 14 free throw attempts. Rookie DeMar DeRozan continued his strong play of late, finishing with 15 points, hitting all seven of his free throws as the Raptors.

"I think this type of win builds character," Jack said. "When you are not playing the way you are capable of playing, you have to find a way, find something to gut out a win. It wasn't pretty but it goes down as a 'W' and that is the important thing."
