Wizards-Pistons Preview

When Flip Saunders was their coach, the Detroit Pistons were one of the league's toughest teams to beat at home. They haven't enjoyed that same home-court advantage since his firing in 2008.

Now the coach of the Washington Wizards, Saunders makes his first trip back to The Palace of Auburn Hills on Sunday to take on struggling Detroit.

Saunders led the Pistons (7-12) to the Eastern Conference finals in each of his three seasons as their coach, but never got them into the NBA finals. He was fired June 3, 2008, after Detroit lost to Boston in the postseason.

Michael Curry replaced Saunders as coach last season, and the Pistons regressed. They made the playoffs as the eighth seed and were swept by Cleveland in the first round.

John Kuester has since taken over the coaching reins in Detroit, and the team hasn't seen much improvement. The Pistons' 105-96 win over Milwaukee on Friday was just their second victory in 10 games. They did win 106-103 at Washington on Nov. 14 in Saunders' first game against his former team.

Part of Detroit's struggles following Saunders' dismissal has stemmed from its troubles at home. Since the start of the 2008-09 season, the Pistons are 20th in the league with a .520 home winning percentage, going 26-24.

The Pistons were 97-26 at The Palace under Saunders for the NBA's third-best home winning percentage (.789) in that span.

Saunders' new team is starting to get things turned around after a sluggish start.

The Wizards (7-11) are coming off Friday's 109-107 overtime loss to Toronto, just their second defeat in six games after opening 3-9.

Washington blew a six-point lead with 5 1/2 minutes to go in the fourth quarter but had a chance to win in overtime. Gilbert Arenas missed a layup with about 2 seconds left and the Wizards' tip-in attempts also failed.

"I'm more disappointed in this game than any game we've had," Saunders said. "When you're about to get there, you got to take that next step, and that next step means being more disciplined and not being complacent. We just didn't do what we needed to do."

Arenas had a season-high 34 points and is looking healthy after being limited to 15 games over the previous two seasons due to various knee injuries. The three-time All-Star is averaging 26.0 points in three games this month after averaging 12.5 in his previous four.

He had 19 points and a season-best 10 assists last month against Detroit, which has won three straight home games over Washington.

Ben Gordon led the Pistons with 29 points in the first meeting, but he's been slowed by a sprained left ankle recently. He had 16 points Friday in his second game back after sitting out the previous two.

"It's still sprained, so I'm just trying to do what I can out there," Gordon said.

With Gordon not at full strength, rookie Jonas Jerebko has picked up some of the slack, scoring 16 points Friday. Jerebko is averaging 13.8 points in his last four games after averaging 5.0 points in his first 13.

"Jonas has emerged as one of the best rookies in this league - he is really expanding his game," Kuester said.

Revamped Pistons return to their old grind-it-out ways

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- As they reached the 20-game mark on Sunday, the revamped Detroit Pistons began to establish an identity. Though their offseason moves suggested they would become a high-scoring team, the Pistons are back to their old grind-it-out, ball-sharing, defensive-minded ways

They won for the third time in four games after snapping a seven-game losing streak, edging the Washington Wizards, 98-94, at The Palace.

All of those victories have come at home.

Detroit held a single-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter with everybody on the court contributing in some fashion.

"The next challenge for us is doing this, with this group, on the road," said head coach John Kuester, whose club heads to Philadelphia Wednesday to play against ex-teammate Allen Iverson. "We played with passion. We understood we had to work extremely hard. The next step in our growth is going on the road and being as focused as we've been at home."

The Pistons held the Wizards to 38 percent shooting in the second half while five players reached double figures. Rodney Stuckey led the way with 25 points, 18 in the first half, but first-round pick Austin Daye blindsided the Wizards with 11 second-half points.

Daye made all five of his shots, including four from mid-range and a 3-pointer. That helped fill the void left by gimpy Ben Gordon, who only played 12 minutes because of a left ankle sprain. Gordon spent most of the second half with an icepack around his ankle.

"I'm confident in myself and the coaches are starting to have more and more confidence in me," said Daye, who was averaging 4.5 ppg entering the game. "I've just got to keep proving it in practice and proving it in games that I can do those types of things and I'll get more time."

Ben Wallace didn't score a point but he made three crucial hustle plays in the closing minutes. After the Wizards closed to within one, 85-84, Wallace made two steals and grabbed an offensive rebound. That led to five free throws, nudging Detroit's lead back to six.

Other than sparkplug Earl Boykins, the Wizards did not receive a noteworthy performance. Boykins had 18 points and four assists but their Big Three - Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas - shot a combined 15-for-42. They also combined for eight turnovers and Jamison was also a non-factor on the boards, grabbing just two rebounds in 37 minutes.

That helped to spoil Flip Saunders' return to Detroit. Saunders was fired by the Pistons after the 2007-08 season, despite three consecutive Eastern Conference finals appearances.

The Wizards, who came into the season with expectations of significant improvement, dropped to 7-12.

"We just aren't getting that overall consistency," Saunders said. "I think at times there is just a lack of aggression out there."

Arenas finished with eight points, 13 below his average. He attempted just four shots through the first three quarters and failed to deliver when he finally looked for his shot. He was 1-for-5 during the fourth quarter with three turnovers.

"The building was cold tonight and I just didn't get into a rhythm,"

he said. "I started off pretty good but then I got two quick fouls and had to sit for awhile. I never really got into the flow of the game."

The Pistons shot 42.7 percent but that belied the overall flow of their attack. Their frontcourt players were particularly unselfish, making 13 of their 22 assists. Detroit had a season-high 28 assists while defeating Milwaukee Friday.

"These games we've been winning, guys have been emphasizing moving the basketball," said Charlie Villanueva, who had five assists to go along with his 18 points. "It's been contagious, like a snowball effect, and it starts with our guards. People are creating an opportunity for another teammate and that's how we're going to win games."

Villanueva played with a mask for the second time since breaking his nose against Atlanta a week earlier. He made a crucial four-point play, hitting a 3-pointer while getting fouled by Boykins, to give the Pistons their biggest lead of the fourth, 81-72.

Will Bynum (16 points) made seven free throws in the final 1:22.

Rookie Jonas Jerebko added his second double-double with 10 points and

11 rebounds.

"That's the beauty of our team," Villanueva said. "Guys are answering the call when we need it."
