Rockets-Trail Blazers Preview

After opening the season with a loss at the Rose Garden, the Houston Rockets have become a much better road team.

Houston looks to complete a perfect four-game trip when it meets the Trail Blazers on Saturday.

The Rockets (11-8) won their third straight Thursday, 111-109 over Golden State. Seven players scored in double figures, led by Aaron Brooks' 25. Brooks went 5 of 8 from 3-point range and made two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining.

Houston trailed by 10 before going on a 12-0 run to make it 105-103 with 2:21 left. The Warriors tied it at 109-all before Brooks was able to draw a foul and get to the free-throw line to secure the win.

"We're a much better team when (Brooks is) scoring points and he's getting something done," coach Rick Adelman said. "He had some confidence there in the fourth quarter. That last play I was going to play pick-and-roll but he talked me out of it ... and he was right - we got the foul and won the game."

Brooks, averaging 17.1 points, is scoring 22.7 and shooting 61.0 percent from the field during the road trip. He's 11 of 15 from 3-point range over the three games.

Saturday closes the trip, which has included wins over Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Rockets are 7-3 away from home since opening the season with a 96-87 loss at Portland.

Houston will look to hand the Blazers (12-8) their first four-game losing streak since they dropped five in a row March 27-April 6, 2008. Portland is looking to play better defense after giving up an average of 107.0 points during the skid. It yielded 88.5 over its first 17.

The Blazers are coming off a 107-100 loss to Miami on Tuesday. After giving up 32 points in the first quarter, they cut a 16-point, fourth-quarter deficit to eight with less than 2 minutes remaining. Portland, though, was unable to get any closer until Brandon Roy's 3-pointer with 8.9 seconds left made it 106-100.

Portland has been outscored 93-60 in the first quarter over its last three games.

"We've dug ourselves a hole and we can't get close enough and get stops," coach Nate McMillan said. "That's definitely something we haven't done well in the last three games."

Roy finished with a team-high 25 points Tuesday, while Greg Oden had a career-best 20 rebounds in 30 minutes after getting into early foul trouble. Portland played without LaMarcus Aldridge, who sat out with a right knee bone contusion and is uncertain for Saturday.

"I don't think everything is clicking at the same time out there on the floor," Oden said. "We need one of those games when everything is going good, when everybody is scoring double digits. That definitely would get us out of this tough patch. It starts with the defense."

After opening their season with a win over the Rockets, the Blazers lost 111-107 in Houston five days later.

Blazer win the game, but likely lose Oden for the season

PORTLAND, Ore. - -- The Trail Blazers got a very important victory Saturday night at the Rose Garden, but lost an even more important player.

Brandon Roy's driving scoop shot with three seconds to go provided Portland with a 90-89 victory over Houston, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Earlier, the mood in the Garden was somber as Greg Oden went down with a left knee injury.

An MRI showed a fractured patella. Oden will undergo surgery to repair the kneecap.

A timetable for his return was not immediately set.

"It felt like a punch in the gut," Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard said. "He's likely to miss the (rest of the) season."

Oden seemed to wrench the knee as he lifted to block a shot just 4:15 into the game. He fell to the floor, holding the knee. Medical personnel converged on the 7-foot center almost immediately as a hush fell over the Rose Garden. After several minutes, he was hoisted onto a gurney and taken to the locker room as fans rose to give him a standing ovation.

Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft out of Ohio State, has been plagued by injures his entire NBA career. The 7-footer missed what would have been his rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery to repair his right knee in 2007-08. After extensive rehabilitation, he played 61 games last season, but was playing the best ball of his career this season. Oden was averaging 11.7 points and 8.8 rebounds and was second in the NBA in blocked shots at 2.4 per game and fourth in the league with a .605 shooting percentage.

It was the latest in a series of injuries to the Blazers, including coach Nate McMillan, who will undergo surgery Monday for a ruptured Achilles' tendon suffered Thursday at practice. McMillan was filling in because the Blazers were short of players due to injuries. He won't make the team's upcoming four-game road trip. Assistant coach Dean Demopolous will run the team in McMillan's absence.

Forwards Nicolas Batum (shoulder) and Travis Outlaw (foot) aren't expected back until late in the season. Guard Rudy Fernandez (back spasms) missed Saturday's game and was to undergo and MRI. The Blazers had only nine healthy players by the end of Saturday's game.

"We've gone through it all year long, and we just continue to get these setbacks, where guys are getting injuries that are keeping them out for awhile," McMillan said. "Greg was the most consistent player this short season as far as what he brought every night on both ends of the floor. For him to go through this, it's unfortunate for him."

But McMillan was buoyed by the victory and with the way his players overcame adversity.

"The team I've been looking for, I saw it after (Oden's injury)," the Portland coach said. "The scrappiness, the togetherness, the being connected. ... that team came together tonight after Greg went down. For the first time I've seen them play like we're capable of playing and like we played last year. We ended up pulling out a tough game against a very good team."

After Luis Scola's 12-foot jumper with 9.1 seconds left pushed Houston in front 89-88, Portland called timeout. The Blazers inbounded to Roy at the top of the key. Roy ? guarded by Trevor Ariza ? drove to the basket, scoring on an off-balance, dipsy-do layup that went off the glass and richocheted around the rim before dropping through.

After a Houston timeout, the Rockets got the ball to Brooks, whose drive to the hoop resulted in a desperate layup that didn't draw iron.

Houston (11-9) got an outstanding performance off the bench from forward Carl Landry, who collected 23 points and nine rebounds ? 13 and five in the fourth quarter ? and Luis Scola, who had 21 points and five boards. It was oh so close, which made it that much more frustrating for Rick Adelman.

"We couldn't get a stop there in the last two minutes," the Houston coach said. "We had a great chance to win. When you're playing on the road, (if) you give yourself a shot in the fourth quarter, that's what you want. We had our shot to win; we just didn't get it done."

Roy led Portland with 28 points, but the Blazers also got superlative performances from reserves Andre Miller (24 points on 9-of-14 shooting), Jerryd Bayless (13 points on 4-of-6 shooting) and Joel Przybilla (six points, 12 rebounds).

"When Greg was sitting on the floor after he got hurt, he looked at me and said, 'I'm sorry,' " Roy said. "He ain't got nothing to be sorry about. I said, 'We're going to play this game for you.' We all huddled up and said, 'We got to play for Greg, and for Travis, and Nic.' It was a good, emotional win, for us to step up and win a game for those guys."
