Hawks-Mavericks Preview

The Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks are both off to fine starts a quarter of the way through the season, but they'll each have something significant to prove Saturday night.

Both the Hawks and Mavericks look to bounce back from embarrassing losses when they meet in Dallas, where Atlanta has lost five straight and 10 of its last 11 games.

Atlanta (13-6) won 11 of its first 13 games to jump ahead of defending Eastern Conference champion Orlando atop the Southeast Division, but its last six games have shown coach Mike Woodson's club still has plenty of room for improvement.

The Hawks had lost three of four - including a 17-point home loss to Orlando - before routing Toronto 146-115 on Wednesday, their best offensive night in 16 years.

Defense was Atlanta's problem on Friday when the New York Knicks visited, and part of that was due to the loss of its best defender. Josh Smith, the NBA's leader in blocked shots, was called for two technical fouls after complaining about the defense of New York forward Al Harrington midway through the second quarter, and the Hawks lost 114-107 to the 5-15 Knicks.

"(Smith) just can't put himself in that position again,'' Woodson said.

Joe Johnson scored 29 points but missed all five of his 3-pointers, and Atlanta finished 4 of 23 from beyond the arc. New York shot 57.7 percent with Smith out, the highest field-goal percentage by a Hawks opponent since New Jersey shot 58.2 percent on March 19, 2008.

"Defensively, we were non-existent tonight," Woodson told the NBA's official Web site. "We suddenly ran out of juice, but it was an uphill climb all game."

The Mavericks (14-6), meanwhile, may have suffered an even more shocking loss Friday - particularly considering they didn't lose one of their five starters midway through.

Dallas scored 77 points in the first half of a 117-101 rout of then-winless New Jersey on Wednesday, but barely eclipsed that total in 48 minutes at Memphis. The Mavericks shot a season-low 35.2 percent in a 98-82 loss, their second by 16 points in the past four games.

"I just think our body language was really soft,'' said forward Dirk Nowitzki, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds but was 7 of 22 from the floor. "I think we had good looks. We didn't set picks, but we got some good shots we usually like. The overall energy and body language wasn't great.''

The Hawks will definitely need Smith to step up and defend Nowitzki, who's averaged 25.6 points in the Mavericks' last seven games versus Atlanta. Dallas has won 10 of 11 home games against the Hawks since Nowitzki entered the league.

While the Mavericks have two elite scorers in Nowitzki and former Atlanta guard Jason Terry, the NBA's reigning sixth man of the year, they've struggled to find a third scoring option with Josh Howard still recovering from ankle surgery.

Shawn Marion, who missed three games in mid-December with an ankle injury, is averaging 12.1 points - his lowest since his rookie season - and hasn't scored more than 15 in nearly a month.

Marion had a season-low four points in the loss to the Grizzlies.

"It seems like everything we did out there was kind of lethargic,'' he said.

Johnson, who was averaging 14.3 points on 35.8 percent shooting in his last six games before a strong performance against the Knicks, averaged 28.0 points as the Mavericks and Hawks split two meetings last season.

Mavs go cold in 4th as Hawks end five-game skid in Dallas

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- A frigid fourth quarter completed a miserable weekend for the Mavericks as the Hawks snapped a five-game winless streak in Dallas with an 80-75 victory on Saturday night.

Joe Johnson scored 31 points and Marvin Williams grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Hawks, who had lost 10 of their previous 11 trips to the American Airlines Center. The Mavs shot just 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) in the final quarter and 37.3 percent overall to lose their second straight game, their first losing streak of the season.

Dallas scored its fewest points since a 102-74 loss at Cleveland on March 29, 2009 and its fewest points at home since an 85-71 setback against the Clippers on April 19, 2006. Coupled with their 98-82 defeat Friday at Memphis, it was a weekend to forget for the Mavericks.

"We might be in a little bit of a funk right now," Dallas forward Shawn Marion said. "The ball wasn't going in for us like there was a little bit of a lid on there for us. When you hold a team to 36 percent shooting, you are going to win, but that wasn't the case tonight. We didn't capitalize on anything."

Dirk Nowitzki had 32 points and Erick Dampier tallied 12 rebounds to lead Dallas. Jason Terry, making his first start of the season, was the only other Maverick in double figures with 17 points on 5-for-16 shooting. Dallas, which used its sixth different starting lineup in 21 games, was outscored 34-10 in the paint and committed twice as many turnovers as Atlanta (16-8). The Mavericks did set a season high with 14 blocks, including four each by Nowitzki and Dampier and three rejections by Drew Gooden.

Gooden's fastbreak dunk on a bounce pass from Terry tied the game at 64-64 with 11:21 left, but the Mavericks missed their next eight field goals as the Hawks put together a 12-5 run. Johnson capped the spurt with a clutch 18-foot fadeaway.

"It was definitely a tough shot," Johnson said. "But I felt that it was a shot I could make and fortunately enough for us it went down."

Nowitzki converted six straight free throws -- improving to 49-for-49 at the line this season in the fourth quarter and overtime -- and then made a driving layup to trim the deficit to 76-73 with 3:23 left on the clock.

Following a baseline jumper by Atlanta's Joe Smith, the Mavs pulled to within three again on Terry's two free throws with 40.4 seconds remaining. Mike Bibby missed a 3-pointer with about 18 seconds remaining, but Dallas wasn't able to get off a shot at the other end as Nowitzki fumbled a pass from Kidd and kicked it out of bounds for the Mavericks' 16th turnover. Johnson iced the victory with two free throws with 1.5 seconds left.

"Joe was huge tonight," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "I thought when they went zone, we hung in there and made plays against the zone we needed to, and that's kind of what got us the spurt we needed and we were able to hold on."

In the back-to-back losses this weekend against the Grizzlies and Hawks, the Mavericks shot a combined 36.1 percent overall and 30.2 percent (16-for-53) from 3-point distance.

"Once again, we struggled to shoot the ball and some of that certainly was Atlanta," Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said. "They have length and they are hard to score against."

It was the Hawks who had trouble scoring during the second quarter. Atlanta opened up a 40-27 lead, but missed its last 14 shots from the field and hit just 1-of-6 free throws over the final 7:19 of the half as Dallas went to the locker room on a 13-1 run. In the second quarter, the Hawks shot 5-for-25 from the field, while the Mavs shot 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.

The Hawks' dry spell extended to 20 consecutive missed field goals before a putback layup by Al Horford went down at the 9:20 mark of the third quarter.

"We had great looks," Woodson said. "We couldn't make a shot."

Atlanta's victory took some of the sting out of Friday's 114-107 loss to the Knicks at home. The Hawks only shot 36 percent and missed 13 of their 15 3-point shots, but dominated in the paint and posted a 15-7 advantage in second-chance points, with a 16-7 edge in offensive rebounds.

"I thought we showed a lot of guts and a lot of character," Johnson said. "To come in against a team who I thought was just as hungry as we are, to win on their home floor and for the score to be as low as it was, I thought that both teams played pretty good defense and we were the team that prevailed."
