Bobcats-Nets Preview

The New Jersey Nets earned the dubious record of the worst start in NBA history in their last game. A five-game stretch against losing teams might be their best chance yet at picking up their first victory of 2009-10.

The Nets open the stretch when they host the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night.

New Jersey (0-18) didn't come close to avoiding the worst start in league history Tuesday night, falling 117-101 to Dallas after allowing the Mavericks to shoot 81.0 percent in the first half. With the defeat, the Nets broke the mark shared by the 1988-89 Miami Heat and 1999 Los Angeles Clippers.

"At this point, I feel the streak has definitely gotten the best of us. It's really not starting to get to us now," guard Chris Douglas-Roberts said after scoring 24 points. "So when a team goes on a run, we kind of, it's almost like we give up, which is really unfortunate but that's what it looks like to me. We kind of give up and just lay down instead of trying to fight."

The Nets appear to have a decent chance to end their misery over the next eight days, as they face the Bobcats (7-10) before taking on New York, Chicago, Golden State and Indiana. Those teams were a combined 30-55 going into Thursday night's action.

New Jersey will have general manager Kiki Vandeweghe on the bench as he assumes the role of interim coach for the remainder of the season. Vandeweghe is taking over after Lawrence Frank was fired following last Friday's 109-96 loss at Sacramento, which gave the club its longest losing streak at the time.

Tom Barrise filled in for two games after Frank's dismissal and will return to an assistant's role. He will be joined by Del Harris in that capacity.

Not surprisingly, the Nets are at the bottom of the league in scoring and shooting, averaging 86.6 points and 40.6 percent from the field.

They will take on a Charlotte club that is averaging 88.3 points on 42.7 percent shooting, ranking it 29th in both categories.

New Jersey is 14-5 all-time against the Bobcats, but lost 79-68 at Charlotte on Nov. 2. The Nets hold a 6-3 advantage at home.

The Bobcats are looking to take advantage of the Nets after getting overpowered 108-90 by Boston on Tuesday. That ended their season-high four-game winning streak.

"It was like the varsity against the JV," coach Larry Brown said as he attacked his team's effort and defense.

"I'm happy for our fans. They got to go home and watch (North) Carolina and Michigan State," he said of the high-profile college game being played at the same time. "If any of them were smart, they would have left early and watched that game."

Gerald Wallace will try to rebound from his worst performance of the season, as he scored five points and went 1 of 6 from the floor. The forward leads Charlotte with 15.2 points and 11.6 rebounds a contest.

He had 24 points and a season-high 20 rebounds in the Nov. 2 meeting with New Jersey.

Finally! Nets drop Bobcats for first win of the season

EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- There was a new coach and a renewed intensity that screamed they had enough of being the NBA's national punch line.

And when the Nets were finally - and mercifully - able to put up their long-awaited first 'W' with a 97-91 triumph over the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night at the Izod Center, there was as much a sense of relief as there was the feeling they could get used to this.

After losing an NBA record 18 games to start their season, the Nets are now 1-0 under new coach Kiki Vandeweghe. And with Courtney Lee finally breaking through with a career-high 27 points and Brook Lopez adding 31 points and 14 rebounds in a more open-floor offense led by Devin Harris, New Jersey has a nice one to build on for the first time.

"At the end of the day, this is one win," Vandeweghe said. "I told them enjoy the win and we're coming back to practice tomorrow. You build on things."

"We wanted to get it out of the way and we did it," Nets forward Chris Douglas-Roberts said. "Now we can't be satisfied with this. We have to move forward and put something together, get on a winning streak here."

The Nets had put together perfect quarters before this season, but never in the fourth. This, however, would be the one where New Jersey took a punch and finally punched back.

Lee, making his first start of the season, put in a couple of buckets to fuel a 7-0 run and give the Nets a 76-71 lead. A pair of Lopez buckets and a Keyon Dooling 14-footer kept the Nets up 84-78 with 5:19 left.

But a pair of Stephen Jackson 3-pointers tied the score at 86-86, putting the fear of heartbreak into the Nets and their fans.

"We could be susceptible to doubt, but it wasn't there today," said Harris, who finished with 16 points (despite 2-for-14 shooting) and eight assists. "We held each other accountable."

Proving that point, Lee answered with a pair of free throws and then a steal and breakaway bucket to put New Jersey up 90-86 with 2:22 left.

Lee said he enjoyed the freedom of a more open game, directed by Harris.

"My teammates did a great job of creating and spacing and making plays for each other," he said. "That was one of the things we did today. You could see the guys out there having fun."

The Nets did most of their remaining damage from the line. Harris drew a foul in 3-point range off Raymond Felton and knocked down all three. Lopez followed through with another pair from the stripe to make it 95-86 with 1:15 left.

For Harris, however, it wasn't enough. The star guard made certain that no one was taking this away from the Nets by diving three rows deeps into the stands chasing after a loose ball with about a minute left.

"That was a ball we needed in that point of time," Harris said.

Jackson and Raymond Felton led Charlotte with 28 points apiece. Ironically, Charlotte was the last team the Nets earned a win against, dating back to April 13 last season. And many of the Bobcats were on record for not wanting to be on the team that finally lost to New Jersey. With Brown publicly calling out his team for a lack of effort in Tuesday's 108-90 loss to Boston, the Nets were at least chasing a team that was ready to battle.

"The Nets played with a lot of energy," Brown said. "Brook Lopez was great. Courtney Lee was great."

"They have a lot of reasons to feel good about themselves," Jackson added. "They said they felt like they started a new season with a new coach. They played like they wanted this game.

Brown, who coached Vandeweghe when he played at UCLA and also with the Clippers in 1991-92, said his former player would fare well, particularly with Del Harris in tow.

"Del's done it all," Brown said. "That's why you have staffs....But Kiki's been in basketball his whole life. I remember him working at Pete Newell's big man's camp. So he's always been a student of the game. I don't think it's rocket science."
