Nets-Lakers Preview

Lawrence Frank had been the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference, but he won't be around when the New Jersey Nets eventually get their first win of the season.

After firing their coach, the Nets try to avoid matching the worst start in NBA history Sunday night when they play the reigning NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers.

With the losses mounting, the Nets (0-16) finally fired Frank before the finale of their four-game road trip. Only the 1988-89 Miami Heat and 1999 Los Angeles Clippers started seasons 0-17, and as assistant Tom Barisse takes over the team for this game, the Nets appear hard-pressed to avoid joining those two teams to share this dubious mark.

New Jersey's empty road trip continued Friday night with a 109-96 defeat to Sacramento that matched the franchise's overall longest losing streak. The Nets fell behind by as many as 22 points late in the second quarter and rallied to as close as six points in the second half before allowing the Kings to pull away.

"We have to come out with the same type of intensity we had in the second half no matter if it's the Lakers or the Knicks," guard Devin Harris said. "Yeah, they're the defending champions, but they can be beat. If we give the effort we need to, we'll keep ourselves in the game."

The Nets haven't kept themselves in too many games while averaging an NBA-low 85.6 points and shooting a league-worst 40.3 percent from the field. Ten of their losses have come by double digits, including each game during this trip.

A sore right groin has limited Harris, the team's leading scorer last season, to six games and three starts. In his return to the starting lineup Friday, he scored a season-high 25 points despite shooting 6 for 22.

Harris shot 31.0 percent in New Jersey's two losses to Los Angeles last season, including a 5-for-16 performance in a 120-93 road defeat on Nov. 25, 2008. The point guard, however, topped 20 points against the Lakers for the first time in his career with a team-high 21 in that game.

Kobe Bryant has also struggled with his shooting against the Nets as his 39.3 percent in 19 meetings is his worst against any opponent. He's been held to 10.7 points and 26.5 percent shooting over the last three matchups, but the Lakers have won them all, thanks to Pau Gasol.

Gasol has averaged 28.7 points on 71.7 percent shooting against the Nets since joining Los Angeles in the middle of the 2007-08 season.

The Lakers (12-3) enter Sunday's matchup having scored 100 points in five straight wins. They delivered their highest point total of the season in Saturday night's 130-97 victory at Golden State. In his fourth game back from a strained right hamstring, Gasol had 22 points to lead seven players in double figures.

"Pau's just being Pau," said Bryant, who scored 20 for the fifth straight game. "He's one of the best in the game. We missed that."

Los Angeles is 1-1 in the second of back-to-back games this season, winning in overtime at Houston on Nov. 4 and losing at Denver on Nov. 13. The Lakers, however, haven't dropped consecutive finales of back-to-back scenarios since November 2007.

The Nets, meanwhile, have dropped 16 straight road games dating to a 115-89 win over New York on March 18.

New Jersey has also lost 27 of 35 all-time road games against Los Angeles. Its loss at the Staples Center last season followed a 102-100 win there on Nov. 25, 2007.

Kobe, Lakers send Nets to record-tying 17th straight loss

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- The New Jersey Nets made history Sunday. Well, at least tied it.

Following a 106-87 trouncing by the Lakers at Staples Center, the Nets have now dropped 17 straight to open the season, tied for the NBA's all-time worst start.

"It's not a good feeling," Nets guard Devin Harris said. "It's not a good feeling all around. Guys are mentally frustrated right now. For some reason (what's going on in practice) is not transforming over."

The winless Nets (0-17) join the 1988-89 expansion Miami Heat and the 1999-2000 Los Angeles Clippers for the dubious record. The Heat and Clippers finished 15-67 that season.

New Jersey could break the record Wednesday when it hosts Dallas (12-5).

"I can't remember the last time I've lost five games in a row," Harris said. "I don't want to be associated with (the record)."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson knows what it's like to be on a losing streak. He was a New Jersey assistant in 1981 when they lost 15 in a row. Lamar Odom was a member of the 1999 Clippers.

"I really don't know," Jackson said before the game when asked what to tell a team that has been on such a streak. "You're at a loss of words. The words aren't going to help. Action is what helps at that particular time."

Odom's advice to the Nets?: "Just play hard, that's all you can do. Take your time. Play with their hearts. They'll be alright."

In the win, Kobe Bryant finished with a game-high 30 points, including five 3-pointers, eight rebounds and seven assists. Pau Gasol had 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Jordan Farmar chipped in with season-high 15 points.

Unlike the Nets, the defending-champions are heading in the opposite direction. The Lakers (13-3) have now won six in a row, tied for the longest current winning streak.

After dispatching the Warriors by 33 Saturday, the Lakers didn't show any signs of letting up on a back-to-back. Up 25 at the half, the Lakers opened up on a 16-5 run capped by Bryant's 3-pointer, which gave the Lakers their biggest lead of the game at 34 points.

For the game, the Lakers hit 13 3-pointers and shot 50 percent to the Nets' 43.

If there is any consolation for the Nets, the Lakers have been torching their opponents of late, stringing together 100 points in six straight games and outscoring their opponents by an average of 17.6 points.

"I don't know if you can script it any better," Jackson said.

In the defeat, Nets center Brook Lopez had a team-high 26 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Harris tallied 16.

Sunday's game may have been especially disheartening for New Jersey following the firing of coach Lawrence Frank earlier in the day.

"We knew it was on a ticking bomb, but obviously it was unexpected this morning," Harris said. "We came into the game a little scattered.

"It doesn't matter who the coach is, if we don't change some of the habits, not much is going to change throughout the team."

Frank, 39, had coached New Jersey for six-plus seasons and was the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference. Before the game, players were shocked and saddened by the dismissal.

"I do (feel bad)," said Nets guard Rafer Alston, adding later, "I'm pretty sure in the NBA if they could fire some players, they would. When you're 0-16 players need to go. The easiest thing to do is put it on the coach."

Tom Barisse was named interim coach for Sunday's game. The Nets have not released information on the coaching position.

"I don't know," said Barisse on his future. "I haven't had any conversations with (the organization) other than they were going to make the change and I would have the key tonight. I think we'll sit down tomorrow and talk and we'll see what happens."

Missed layups and a handful of traveling calls plagued the Nets early. New Jersey scored just 12 points in the first quarter on 27.3 percent shooting. No Net scored more than four points. The Nets did have an early 8-5 lead, but that vanished when the Lakers put together a 21-2 run that seemingly put the Nets away.

Farmar's play at the end of first quarter summed up what has happened to the Nets this season. With less than three seconds, Alston picked up a loose ball and seemed to have a wide-open layup, but Farmar came from behind and rejected it.

A positive from tonight's game was Lopez's play. He scored 12 of the Nets' 34 first-half points. Bryant and Gasol, however, nearly outscored the Nets themselves, tallying a combined for 33 points.

As the standout player on the team, Harris has taken it even harder especially with many of his fellow All-Stars succeeding.

"Jealously, envy, all that," said Harris of what he is feeling. "I don't think anybody has gone through the situation that I've gone through.

"But I'm glad to be going through it with this group of guys because they're a good bunch of guys and they want to win. We just have to find a way to do it."
