Hawks-Pistons Preview

A decent rivalry between the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks through much of the 1980s and '90s became very one-sided this decade.

That is until last season when the Hawks got the better of it, and there's little reason to think that will soon change.

While Atlanta has one of the best records in the Eastern Conference, the injury-plagued Pistons have one of the worst and they're trying to snap a seven-game losing streak Sunday while avoiding a fourth straight defeat to the Hawks.

These teams were Central Division foes until Atlanta (12-4) was shifted to the Southeast in 2004 and they met in the playoffs five times from 1986 through 1999, with the Hawks winning three of those series. Once the millennium hit, however, only Detroit (5-11) remained a perennial postseason contender.

The Hawks went through an eight-year playoff drought until returning in 2007-08, but they still lost all four meetings with Detroit that season. That left Atlanta with a 6-27 record in the series since December 1999.

The Hawks never won back-to-back meetings during that stretch of futility, but they finally turned the tide last season. Besides winning all three matchups with Detroit, Atlanta won its first playoff series since 1999 and the Pistons failed to win one for the first time since 2001.

Atlanta begins this season's series riding its longest win streak over Detroit since a four-game sweep in 1993-94.

Now the Hawks can cause Detroit to match its longest losing streak of the decade. Since January 1995, the only time the Pistons have dropped eight straight came last season, but that's what they face with a loss Sunday and they'll be short-handed.

Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) have not played this month and neither is expected back Sunday. The same can be said of Ben Gordon, who sat out Friday night's 104-96 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers with a sprained ankle.

"Our confidence doesn't go anywhere. We are professionals so we have to stay with that mindset," said guard Will Bynum, who was 4 of 17 from the field Friday. "The best thing about the NBA is that we have another game on Sunday. We got to regroup and try to get our stuff together and get a win on Sunday."

Atlanta got its act together Friday, bouncing back from consecutive losses to beat Philadelphia 100-86.

The Hawks hit 51.4 percent from the field after getting held below 39 percent in defeats to New Orleans and Orlando.

"Expectations are high this year and that's the way you want it," coach Mike Woodson told the league's official Web site. "We're not at the top yet and that's the way the team likes it."

Jamal Crawford scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter Friday and continues to play well as Atlanta's sixth man, averaging 18.8 points in the last four games.

He's also provided a veteran presence for a young roster along with point guard Mike Bibby, who scored 21 on Friday. Bibby averaged 7.2 points on 32.6 percent shooting in the previous five games.

"He's a real pro," Woodson said of Bibby.

Pistons crash the boards, snap seven-game losing streak

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (NBA.com exclusive) -- When it comes to offensive rebounding, Jonas Jerebko just tries to follow the leader.

Jerebko, the Detroit Pistons' rookie forward, takes his cue from Ben Wallace when the ball comes off the rim. Led by that duo, the Pistons seemed to grab every rebound while snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Wallace and Jerebko combined for 16 of the Pistons' season-high 24 offensive rebounds as they surprised Atlanta, 94-88, Sunday at The Palace.

"Body did a great job in that," said Jerebko, referring to Wallace.

"I'm just trying to do what he does -- get in there and get a hand on all the rebounds."

The injury-riddled Pistons needed all the second and third chances they could get to beat one of the Eastern Conference's top teams. They played without Richard Hamilton (ankle), Ben Gordon (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) and lost another rotation player during the fourth quarter.

Charlie Villanueva broke his nose when he was fouled by the Hawks' Zaza Pachulia and smashed face first into Wallace's side. Villanueva hit both free throws with a large tissue in his left nostril before retreating to the locker room. He will have surgery for his broken nose Monday.

"The guy got popped pretty good," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "There was blood everywhere. He was very courageous in going back and knocking down those foul shots."

Kuester could have been referring to his entire club when talking about a gritty performance. The Pistons broke their two-week long losing streak with sheer effort, out-rebounding the Hawks, 53-27.

"Some of the games were on us," Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey said of the slide. "We get down by 15, 18, 20 points and then all of a sudden in the fourth quarter we just want to start playing hard. We'd use a lot of energy trying to come back and just end up losing by six or seven points. Today, we stuck with it and got a victory."

Jerebko, who scored a career-high 22 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers Friday, recorded his first double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Wallace also had a double-double with 10 points and a season-best 18 rebounds, 11 on the offensive side.

With the Pistons' big men pounding the glass, they outscored the Hawks 60-38 in the paint and 30-10 on second-chance points.

"When you get beat 53-27 on the boards, you aren't going to beat many teams in this league," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. "We just didn't compete today. They outworked us from a defensive standpoint and we just couldn't rebound with them. Ben Wallace was the difference today."

Jerebko, who had five offensive rebounds, was also a difference-maker on the defensive side. With the Hawks on a 2-on-1 break trailing by six with two minutes left, Jerebko stole Jamal Crawford's pass to slow Atlanta's rally.

"I was going to foul, to be honest," Jerebko said. "I was just going to foul and stop the play but he tried passing it and I just went into the passing lane and got the steal."

The Hawks eventually cut the Pistons' 11-point lead earlier in the quarter to two but reserve guard Will Bynum (19 points, four assists) and Jerebko made two free throws apiece in the final minute.

Kuester shook up his depleted lineup, starting little-used Chucky Atkins at point guard and moving Stuckey to shooting guard. He also moved Villanueva to the bench and started Jason Maxiell at power forward.

Stuckey was comfortable getting the ball in the offensive zone instead of bringing it up regularly. He had 23 points and eight assists.

Villanueva had 13 points and six rebounds before his injury. Maxiell chipped in seven points and six rebounds and helped to set the defensive tone.

"We knew coming into this game we were going to have to defend," Kuester said. "The mindset of having Max in the game at that time was important for us. But Charlie is always going to get starter's minutes right now."

Josh Smith led the Hawks with 23 points but was one of the culprits in their embarrassing rebounding display.

"It was lack of effort," Smith said. "We needed to know their personnel. We have to know that Ben Wallace is going to play hard and keep boxing out. It is kind of discouraging for us today because we knew how many guys that they had out that were really key guys. We had all of our guys out there and not being able to get the win is very disappointing."

Crawford added 20 points for the Hawks, who lost for the third time in four games.
