Suns-Timberwolves Preview

Coming off their best shooting game of the season, the high-octane Phoenix Suns look to improve upon the Western Conference's best record.

That doesn't bode well for the slumping Minnesota Timberwolves.

Phoenix opens a four-game road trip Friday night when it takes on a Timberwolves team approaching the franchise record for consecutive losses.

The Suns (12-3), the only team that has scored 100 or more in each game, posted their second straight blowout win Wednesday - 126-111 over Memphis. Led by Amare Stoudemire's 13-of-18 shooting effort and 28 points, Phoenix hit 35 of its final 48 shots and made a season-best 61.9 percent from the field.

It was the Suns' best shooting performance since hitting 62.1 percent in a 154-130 victory at Golden State on March 15.

"We did a great job of exploiting (the Grizzlies') defense," said Stoudemire, who has scored 21 or more in five straight games. "I was taking what the defense was giving me."

So were the rest of the Suns, who are tied with Cleveland as the NBA's top 3-point shooting team at 44.8 percent. After hitting 11 of 18 from long range in Sunday's 117-91 win over Detroit, Phoenix made 9 of 17 versus Memphis, with Channing Frye and Jason Richardson hitting three apiece.

In a 120-112 victory over visiting Minnesota on Nov. 1, the Suns hit 14 of 26 3-point attempts. Frye matched a career high with six 3s and had a season-high 25 points.

Steve Nash, who leads the league with 11.9 assists per game, had 14 points and 14 assists in that game for one of his nine double-doubles - tops among the league's guards.

The Timberwolves (1-14), meanwhile, have lost all 14 of their games since a season-opening victory over New Jersey on Oct. 28. The franchise record for consecutive losses is 16, set from Feb. 29-March 29, 1992.

Minnesota set a team record for the worst start to a season with Wednesday's 124-111 defeat to Denver.

"I told them I was very disappointed with them at halftime and I was disappointed with them at the end of the ball game," said first-year coach Kurt Rambis, whose team trailed by as many as 24 in the first half. "... But the effort, the energy, the passion, just that competitiveness, it just wasn't there tonight."

Minnesota now must face a Phoenix team that's scoring an NBA-high 111.4 points per game and shooting 50.1 percent - also best in the league. The Timberwolves are allowing an average of 104.1 points.

Guard Corey Brewer posted his first career double-double Wednesday with a career-high 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Al Jefferson had his fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.

Suns center Robin Lopez is expected to make his season debut Friday after being sidelined with a broken bone in his left foot. In Phoenix's last visit to the Target Center, Lopez had six points and a career-high 11 rebounds in a 110-97 victory April 11.

Suns start fast, send Timberwolves to 15th straight loss

MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- His team breezed into town on a winning streak, claimed its over-by-halftime victory, and left before the Timberwolves barely knew what hit them. But Alvin Gentry, his conscience apparently bothering him after the Suns bludgeoned Minnesota, 120-95, on Friday, tried to leave something behind for the Wolves: Hope.

"Tell those guys over there, they don't quit. That means something," the Phoenix coach said after handing the Wolves their 15th consecutive loss, one short of the franchise record. "Tell them (to) just remember, the Suns started one year 0-13 and made the playoffs."

Nice of him to say. But it's hard to imagine how that 1997 miracle in Phoenix will motivate the 1-15 Timberwolves, off to the worst start in franchise history. "It's the same old story," said Minnesota forward Ryan Gomes. "Nothing goes right until we're 10 or 20 points back."

That didn't take long on Friday, because while Gentry was generous in his comments, his team was ruthless in its execution. The Suns, winners of five of their last six games, made 55 percent of their shots in the first half, held Minnesota to 32 percent shooting over the same period, and burst to a 10-point lead in the game's first eight minutes.

"We talked about it in the locker room just before we came out: Don't allow them to feel like they're in the game. Don't let them gain any confidence," Gentry said. "A team that's really struggling, they're looking for any sign they can turn it around."

Actually, the Wolves got one, and it gave Gentry a brief moment of discomfort. Phoenix's leading scorer, Amar'e Stoudemire, committed a rebounding foul and an offensive foul in the game's first 150 seconds, and headed to the bench. That put more offensive pressure on Grant Hill, Jason Richardson and Steve Nash -- and they responded.

"Those guys, they know how to react. They understand the ebb and flow of a game, when to step it up," Gentry said. Indeed, Hill made four of five shots in the first quarter, Nash made three of four with five assists, and Richardson chipped in five points as Phoenix roared to a 32-22 lead at the quarter.

And those guys weren't even the big news of the period.

With Stoudemire benched, Robin Lopez made his 2009-10 debut, and his impact was immediate. Lopez, out since training camp after having surgery on his broken left foot, scored six points, grabbed five rebounds, and generally banged around the paint without a second thought to his foot.

"We're really glad to have him back," Gentry said. "You can see that his size really helps us guard post players. He's still got a ways to go before he's in actual basketball shape, but he's really important for us."

Stoudemire picked up another foul early in the second quarter, and finished the half with just two points. "It's the first time this season I've got into foul trouble early, and it was tough," Stoudemire said. "But there are two halves, and I was able to keep my composure. I came out in the third quarter wanting to jump on them, and I was able to do that."

No kidding. Stoudemire made five baskets in the third quarter, giving him 12 for the night. He could have had more, but Phoenix, on the first stop of a four-game road trip, rested all five starters for the entire fourth quarter. "Getting our veterans some rest like that, that helps," Gentry said. "Down the road, that could really be big."

Al Jefferson was big for the Wolves, scoring 20 points, and backup point guard Ramon Sessions made 10 of 13 shots for a season-high 23 points. But Minnesota was undone by the rest of the bench's 5-for-20 shooting, the 1-for-5 contribution of Gomes, and especially Corey Brewer's 1-for-11 helplessness.

"We're really not connecting," Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis said. "We get guys open and we just can't see them. That tells me we don't connect yet as a team."

The Suns, now 13-3 after winning for the fifth time in the last seven road games, certainly do. They hit 59.3 percent of their shots on the night, and had a better shooting percentage on 3-pointers -- 41.7 percent -- than the Wolves shot from anywhere (40.7 percent).

Still, Gentry noted Minnesota's 30-28 edge in the fourth quarter as a positive sign.

"Anybody that has any sympathy at all has to feel sorry for them," he said. "They're playing hard, trying to win games. There will be brighter days ahead."
